Thanks so much for posting. I recently read the book and saw the movie twice and it is great to watch the original coverage of the races. Also, I remember this as a child and how much everyone loved Secretariat. So nice to see it again.
thanks for posting this video! i love it, its like im watching the 1973 derby for the first time. i love looking at what people were wearing back then! so many checkers :O
Secretariat finished 3rd in the Wood because he had an abcess in his mouth that was painful. Having the bit rubbing against the inflammation must have been agony for him YET he still finished third! I remember reading an interview Ron Turcotte did in 1993 on the 20th Anniversary of Red's Triple Crown victory where he said he had no idea Secretariat has had an abcess and was distraught to think he caused Red any kind of pain during the race.
Thank you so much for sharing these videos! Secretariat was before my time, but his amazing skill and records are a joy to watch and a testament to his enduring legend. :)
Somehow when he says it's 29 min to post time it's almost like the countdown to some rocketship launch or something. You know something special and historic is going to happen, but not quite sure if it will be wonderful occasion or a disaster.
I rated this clip 5 stars, cf1970, but 5 stars doesn't do this clip justice. It's more like 50 stars minimum! I love the drawings of the Derby cast as good ole Chic ran down the field. Interesting, we see a TeleStrator-like effect during the Wood Memorial review with the checkmarks where Big Red was. Gotta love the fashion senses of Chic and Woody. Jack Whitaker was solid anchoring the coverage. Great stuff! A heartfelt Thank you, cf1970, for showcasing classic t'bred racing here on YouTube
It was the '70's terjer01 ! Bell bottoms, Elvis sideburns, polyester and platform shoes, Ugh ! What were they thinking ! The only CLASS was on the racetrack.
"... is he truly a superhorse, well that and other questions will find answers shortly... 29 minutes to post time...." I'm so excited.... hi cf1970 thanks for all the work you've done recently on "The Golden One." Spectacular !

CBS knew how to do it. NBC has made the triple crown a joke with their 3 hour lame show.

do you notice that thet don't focus in on the betting aspect in those days!
they don't even discuss odds!
it's all about the sport!

the ratings said 2 stars Nothing Special !! (Do you suppose you-know-who is lurking ?? Or one of that ilk. Has to be or a really disinterested type.
