The melody of "Ontet" can be found on the tag of "Godchild", written by George Wallington, arranged by Mr. Mulligan, from Birth Of The Cool, recorded in 1949. It comes in at about 2:11 on that track. Fantastic theme...
i like the tune i love all the players but i dislike the valve trombone, not to be an ass, but i feel like the point of a trombone is that it slides and it's real pointless to play one with valves. he was still an awesome player regardless.
bob brookmeyer is a ninja on the valve trombone, and his chromatic valleys and peaks style of playing is probably better suited on the valves for him. Plus I think I read somewhere that he used to have a slide, but that he said he was terrible at it.
plus i think the valves have an interesting sound to them.
It's not a "valve trombone" for christ sake...it's Bob Brookmeyer!!!! one of the best musicians who ever lived.
He does things that can only be done on Valves....half valve smears and other great funky effects....Bob is about ideas baby! get with the program...it's like bach....if Bach is played on a cello or a flute it don't matter no-how ...it's still genius shit!
I knew that tune, but I couldn't place it -- that's it -- Venus de Milo from Birth of the Cool. For some really haunting piano by Mulligan find "Theme for Jobim." Mike S.
"Ontet" is the title. First recorded with his "tentet" (including Chet Baker, Conte Candoli,...) in 1953 (january 31). If I love Mulligan as sax player, composer and arranger, I'm not a fan of Mulligan as pianist.
I'm not surprised that he was a good pianist. He was a great arranger. I suppose that's where he did the arranging. Isn't this just the shout chorus from Venus De Milo?
Music from the year I was born! Fabulous post, thanks!

I knew Mulligan played piano occasionally. He wasn't that bad, either!
