You can't compare the current Phelps (1:42.96) with the current Ian Thorpe (retired). If you're retired, you can't compete. However, you can compare them when they were both swimming and, in that time, Thorpe (1:44.06) was indeed faster than Phelps (1:45.32). So, you can say that Phelps HAS BEATEN Thorpe but you can't say that Phelps BEAT Thorpe cause he never did. Confusing yes, but there is that subtle difference. Anyways, Brenton Rikard can beat Phelps in 100 and 200 Breaststroke so...

It is really apples and oranges. Phelps does not swim the 100m and 200m Breast Stroke routinely. So, of course Rickard would beat Phelps. However, Michael could and would beat Ian THorpe. He was unbeatable in 2007 and 2008. He also beat Thorpe in the 2003 World Championships in the 200IM. I know, that was Phelps specialty, but I do not think any one would bet against Phelps nationally or internationally.

The 200IM would be comparing apples and oranges too, but I was just being a prat comparing Rikard to Phelps =P. The reason why Phelps is unbeatable in 2007 and 08 COULD be because Thorpe wasn't swimming. But then again, Phelps beat Hoogie comfortably in 07 WC, and Thorpe and Hoogie were usually pretty close. But ALSO, we must remember Thorpe's freestyle technique; it's pretty much perfect. All in all, there's no point saying who can beat who now simply because we will never see it happen...

Totally agree! I keep trying to make the same point with these Aussie 'Phelps haters'. Why does Australia hate American swimmers so much? The Thorpe/Phelps comparison is annoying! Michael is competent in the IMs, butterfly and relays. I'm only impressed with Thorpe in freestyle. Michael dominates his races by body lenghts (sometimes two body lenghs) and knocks off world records like crazy! Michael is consistent; never going below his previous records. Thorpe slows down then increases in races.

Phelps shattered Thorpe's World record whilst Thorpe was retired. When you're retired, logically you can't improve and set new world records. When Sean6196 said "had Thorpe competed in the '08 Olympics", he was commenting under the assumption that Thorpe was still swimming professionally and thus could potentially be faster than his old time of 1:44:06 and be faster than Phelps.

Phelps beat Thorpe in 2003 (at age 18!) in the 200IM, by far. Thorpe was either 3rd or 4th behind Phelps. Granted, Thorpe is the greatest freestyle swimmer, he's nowhere near an IM or butterfly swimmer like Phelps. And Phelps 8 medals relied on 3 relay events and US has a stronger relay team than Australia. The US has NEVER lost the 400 IM relay and the 4 x 200m relay beat the silver medalists by minutes (not seconds). Thorpe is a legend but Phelps is more competent in more events than Thorpe!
