Juan Diego Flórez in Madrid: Juan Diego Flórez (tenor) Vincenzo Scalera (piano Teatro Real de Madrid.2.6.2009 (JMI)
"There is no doubt that Juan Diego Flórez is one of the very greatest singers nowadays: in his own repertoire, he is literally incomparable with any other singer.."
La fille du régiment: The Royal Opera, 17th May 2010
“.... so Juan Diego Florez is now inextricably linked with the part of Tonio and the famous nine top c’s...The vocal guns remain one of the wonders of our age. The top c’s were pinged out without any apparent difficulty and he even inserted a d flat in his act two aria....
Strangely, for me, this aria, “Pour me rapprocher de Marie”, is even more thrilling than the more famous “Ah, mes amis”. Florez’s wonderful sense of line and his control over the softest pianissimi make it a moment of pure magic.”
You can say what you want but (although JDF is charming, acts well and is generally great for this role) he can't compare to Pavarotti's rendition. He lacks Pavarotti's ease and his voice is too thin.
I totally agree!!! I love JDF, but listen to the first of each couple of C-s, it's only a touch, and staccatto... Try Pavarotti. Oh, and we have (more had) a Slovenian tenor who could sing perfectly all nine C-s and added a D at the end. Wonderful!
His name is Janez Lotrič. He still sings, but he is 57 this year, so he passed his best times allready... I will try to upload his recording of Tonio's aria.
patricia Ciofi totally look Skin and Bone...having a hard time hitting all the Cs'. She needs a total face make over. and those teeth!!! the costume and production are hideous...Good thing Juan Diego Florez save the show...
ok so this soprano. obviously just using the shear ability and sound as opposed to actual vocal strength and technique to pull off singing like that. if i dont look at her, its great. but she'll be washed up soon. honestly
Juan Diego Florez is not even to be compared to Luciano Pavarotti. One is Leggiero. One is Lyric. I will say that JDF is a little Peruvian man who sounds like a child. He hits the top C's well, but he doesn't have close to the power and beauty of Pavarotti. Pavarotti was a man. Juan sounds like a little boy. Just the nature of his vocal chords and size.
Pav and JDF are two entirely different voices and therefore should not be compared. JDF has a certain presence in some kind of roles that PAV(with his willy the whale looks) could never achieve. Singers should stick to the roles that suit their voices and their abilities. I enjoy both of these great artists when they sing withing their comfort zone.
the fact he is Peruvian is redundant if you are talking about height. The fact a tenor is small has nothing to do with the growth of his vocal chords. The fact he can achieve a greater register than Pav did wont make him have a childs voice, because even if he was a child, such a clearence of sound and position would not be able to be achieved if the technique wasnt mastered in that way.
Oh yes, and there's another one in "Écoutez-moi, de grâce" (Act 2) (it wasn't there initially but he made it work amazingly well - and I'm not surprised at all)
As some others have noted, the female lead looks strained on the top notes but it doesn't bother me. It just reminds one of the intense effort needed to make such beautiful sound and how beauty can emerge from pain. Her face reminds me of the strained and contorted faces some pitchers make when they throw a beautiful curveball, for example. Opera and baseball--perhaps they have more in common than we think.
what? i think you mean their STYLE of singing those top notes. florez' notes are placed and clean, while pavarottis are explosive...literally, but not in the "goal! weve won the world cup YEAH!" kind of explosive, the "whoah, that guy is awesome!" kind of explosive.
yeah, Pavarotti has a bigger voice and holds the final C longer. Nonetheless, after hearing both of them I had to say this is Flórez's territory. His technique provides major security (he sings the two close C's staccato, while Pavarotti doesn't). It's another class of singing which had been neglected for a long time in the 20th century. Of course, Pavarotti would be better in a lot of roles, the ones I hope Flórez won't sing. But in the bel canto roles he is quite unique.
what do you think of patrizia ciofi? i think she adds a bit of girlish youth to the voice. its not completely operatic, and she gives a bit of normal speaking voice or something that makes it sound really girly in a good way, i cant really explain it.

@dubitz11 With such a light voice what do you expect? I say let him age a little more and his voice will begin to fill out :]

Yes, Pav and JDF cant be compared in the sense that... their coloratura and general type of voice is distinct.. so their repertory is..

I believe he is even better at Pavarotti at the top c's, as they are so clean cut and sleek. It makes me smile when he just knocks them off easily!

It's from the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, taped in 2005. The lead soprano is Patrizia Ciofi.

Ciofi looks like she's about to spit blood singing those Cs at 3:13! Listen to Sutherland sing the same passages...it runs much smoother and relaxed.
