I used to brad nail every tie hole, this looks like a cheaper easier method that would make later modifications easier--your weathered rail looks great.

do you fill the "bald" spots without ties like cover them with ballast?

I take some of ties I cut off from the ends of the flex track, trim off the spikes, sand the ties to half their original thickness and slip them back underneath the rails.
