I do not think there is anything wrong with doing a little work for free to get established as long as it is not for people that could or should pay you. If you are going to volunteer your time it should for something worthwhile. (Like a web site for a charitable organization.) Working for a business for free is just stupid. Making a website for an individual for free harms your credibility and income potential. I might make an exception for family members, but thats about it.

Well... I don't agree with the last three words... "you massive ________" but free labor degrades any profession. You would never ask a doctor, attorney, cpa...etc. to work for nothing. 3,000,000 Websites go online each month, so the prospect of building one for free is less than exciting. I know how great it is to get something for free but their is a negative cost associated with free work and the rest of the industry pays for it.
