I passed that hurricane while living at home at the south coast. I was 12 by then. At first, I was excited because I wanted to to witness such an event. But when the storm hit the island, and the eye passed over my town, I was more than scared. The sound of the wind hitting the windows was horrible, even though it was a strong structure, I thought they were going to get blown inside the house.
Witnessed this hurricane in the DR. Opened my eyes concerning the forces of Nature. Almost every tree along the Autopista Las Americas was downed (people collected free coconuts the next day). I remember the quiet "eye". Then it came back strong as ever, with opposite winds! Huge tree-trunks blown down the street like waste paper.Airport ruined. Well, it was a crummy airport anyway back then - more like a bus station. Now it's a real airport. I write as Irene approaches, a mere cat. 1.
I living in Puerto Rico when this happen was 9 years old. It was the longest night in my whole life. This hurricane was the reason why we moved to CT.
poor pr got hit bad. my family was there but i lived and still live in rhode island i was 13 at the time. I love my little island to death and seeing all the destruction the hurricane made made me sad when i saw the vids on tv on how george affected the island.
I was 3 years old about to be 4 in january when this happened i had just moved from NY to Coamo PR and a week later the hurricane came. I remember my sisters hair caught on fire with the candle .

Best eyewall video I've seen Jim. Was a chaser way back and had encounters with Frederick 1979 and Allen in 1980. This was back in the super 8 video days. Caught Frederick at a welcome center at Alabama, Mississippi boarder near I-10. The worst was at night and in those days you could forget about video at night. Set up wind equipment with 102 mph gust. Manage to be in the eye with pressure at 946 MB. Was with meteorologist John Coleman of Chicago for Allen. Worked for him from 1975 to 1979.

i was 5 when this happen my second floor wood house got all destroy i still remember the next day i went to the woods to find all my toys and the only thing i founded was the fridge and beds :'(
I was 80 miles away ifrom the Coast n Hattiesburg, MS when it hit the US. That wind is something that made me not want to sit through another hurricane. Ever. My goodness did it howl.
I was 20 years old when I went through this. Watching this video makes me remember how strong it was. The house I was was suspended by pillars and it was vibrating. I was scared to death.
My house was made of wood and I saw it from my neighbors' house going away with the winds of Georges. It was really sad but our neighbors helped a lot and we got a better house :) so... THANKS GEORGES!
Wow, Jim-- I hadn't watched this footage in a while and I forgot how amazing it is. That is just some top-notch hurricane action. I have to get in one like this.
Haven't seen this footage in awhile - but I gotta say the footage between 1:40 and 2:40 is truly the most amazing hurricane footage I have ever seen in my entire life. Looks like they underestimated George at 115mph.
I remember this hurricane really well ... I was only 10, but the impression it left in my mind will last a lifetime. During the afternoon sept. 21, the sky turned green & purple... I live in the southwest region (about 100 miles from Luquillo) ... when George's eyewall entered about 1am everything, the absolute silence was scary. Half an hour later, the eyewall retreated and the strongest winds struck again. Horrifying!!
I remember like is was today 11 years ago I was living in the northwest of the island went I looked in the sky and it tuned dark when the clock turned 9pm The door was open when suddenly the wind started 2 blow so hard and strong that a a friend of my mom need 2 close the door with his strength I could not sleep cuz of the wind and rain was pounding the window So as always I was in the hallway with my family making jokes
And indyfan22k for your information puertorican is one of the few countries in the world that speak 2 lenguage so as my spanish profesor said we are smatter than american lol
in guam, a majority of all building structures are made of cement; walls, roofs, etc. with metal window shutters on the exterior at ground level to draw shut when a typhoon is approaching. this video really captures the action.
Well, when Americans opted to give us American citizenship, they knew our native language was not English. So now you cannot demand that from us. Anyway, there is nothing bad with speaking English or Spanish or French or any language, as long as we do it correctly. For example, you wrote 'english' on one of your comments. You started a statement with 'otherwise'.
Well, I think this time they are doing it harder just on you.
It's our mother language; they way in which we think, love, and remember the hurricanes we've lived. You'll never be able to break that, not even with your "witty" comments.
@xJohn1300 your not to smart either asshole. What is "da" and "dis"? It's spelled "the" and "this"!!!! and I don't care about your ghetto fuckin ebonics!!!!! Now go get your shine box!!!! Otro fuckin danya rrasa!!!!
Afortunadamente yo no perdí nada. Sin duda alguna un huracán muy fuerte!!
I had three years and Lived in Canovanas when George passed I know , maybe i was to litlle to remember everything but I remember sleeping in the floor that night in one room whit mi mom my grandmother in fact a big part of my family was there . It was awful I remember being awake starring in the hall seeing the candles that where turning off and there was no light and I was scared since I was afraid of the dark . Iremember awaikening because of a big thunder and seeing no light , true story
This is awesome with the intensity of this hurricane Jim! My favorite part of the video is when the palm trees look like they can't take anymore of the violent winds from Hurricane Georges.
A week or so ago I watched all of your videos with my brother, and what a good time that was!
Wow I remember this....I was like 19. I spent the night at my aunt's house watching it destroy the neighborhood nd praying that our house would still be standing. Thank God aside from fallen trees and debris it was ok.
I also remember Hugo, which didn't do much to the west coast. I spent the night in the hospital with appendicitis. My dad had to remove the wood panels covering the door to rush me to the ER. Great timming! LOL
The worst hurricane I've ever seen after Hurricane Hugo in 89'. I was living in the town of cidra when Georges came in september 98'. I heard the trees snapped in half like crackers. I've been through 2 hurricanes and the aftermath is worst because hurricanes destroy what is in its way leaving power poles knocked down and no water service. After 10 years, we haven't had a major hurricane, but unfortunately Puerto Rico is located in a geographic area where the weather is very active.
In that day I was living in Ceiba, in Roosevelt Roads Naval Station... I heard it was in category 4 when it reaches the east part of the island coming from the sea... It's normal to weak when it go through the land... ;)
Georges never made it to category 5, it reached 150 mph, six miles short of cat/5, before it finally made landfall somewhere between Yabucoa and Patillas Georges had weakened to a medium powered cat/2 hurricane with winds of a 110 mph, fives miles short of been a major hurricane. When Hurricane Hugo made landfall in Fajardo it had winds of 135 mph, making a very dangerous cat/4 hurricane. If Hugo had crossed PR like Georges did the story would've been a lot different.
tenia 8 años diiiiablo mi mai habia echo compra avia llegado los cupones como 4 dias antes y la nevera llenita de carne comio to el caserio jajaja yo con mi hermano llorando pq la ventana del cuarto estaba rota y nosotros aguantandola pa q no se saliera to mojaos y sin agua ni luz como por na semana q mal y to destruio si nos paso por el mismo medio suerte q de 5 q hiba bajo a categoria 2 si no desaparecamos {ponce}

I was 20 years old when I went through this. Watching this video makes me remember how strong it was. The house I was was suspended by pillars and it was vibrating. I was scared to death.

Horrifying!!

in guam, a majority of all building structures are made of cement; walls, roofs, etc. with metal window shutters on the exterior at ground level to draw shut when a typhoon is approaching. this video really captures the action.

Well, when Americans opted to give us American citizenship, they knew our native language was not English. So now you cannot demand that from us. Anyway, there is nothing bad with speaking English or Spanish or French or any language, as long as we do it correctly. For example, you wrote 'english' on one of your comments. You started a statement with 'otherwise'.
elquijote007 2 years ago
Well, I think this time they are doing it harder just on you.
It's our mother language; they way in which we think, love, and remember the hurricanes we've lived. You'll never be able to break that, not even with your "witty" comments.
MsGlorimar 2 years ago
What's the matter with you? What matters if we speak or write English or not? What does this have to do with this video?
elquijote007 2 years ago
oh yeah,.. very smart idea to STAY in da freakin car.. yuh know why.. CAUSE IT CAN FLIP!!!! think next time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and idc who filmed dis.
xJohn1300 2 years ago
FYI, During the height of the storm the car was in a carport out of the direct effects of the winds.
cyclonejimcom 2 years ago 3
@xJohn1300 your not to smart either asshole. What is "da" and "dis"? It's spelled "the" and "this"!!!! and I don't care about your ghetto fuckin ebonics!!!!! Now go get your shine box!!!! Otro fuckin danya rrasa!!!!

MJonaWboricuaM 2 years ago

crushingmayhem 2 years ago
In that day I was living in Ceiba, in Roosevelt Roads Naval Station... I heard it was in category 4 when it reaches the east part of the island coming from the sea... It's normal to weak when it go through the land... ;)
albertoscjr 2 years ago
Georges never made it to category 5, it reached 150 mph, six miles short of cat/5, before it finally made landfall somewhere between Yabucoa and Patillas Georges had weakened to a medium powered cat/2 hurricane with winds of a 110 mph, fives miles short of been a major hurricane. When Hurricane Hugo made landfall in Fajardo it had winds of 135 mph, making a very dangerous cat/4 hurricane. If Hugo had crossed PR like Georges did the story would've been a lot different.
undrwatrgypsy 3 years ago
