Controversial often means: People feel so threatened by their own hypocrisy that they refuse to try to understand the source of the criticism.
I don't know if its true, but it's sad:
"Her mother...had (Frances) committed to a sanitarium. She spent the next five years in mental hospitals and was forced to take insulin shock treatment. She was reportedly also gang raped and given a partial lobotomy." (From John Rocco's book: "The Nirvana Companion: Two Decades of Commentary, p. 153).
It is actually Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, or at least an excerpt from it.
He wrote it for Paul Whiteman's band. Woody Allen uses excerpts from it for the movie Manhattan. Oh, I thought you were talking about the melody at the beginning of the video. Woops.
she went to my high school, i got to see her original yearbook, she was the debate club leader of course. what a sad story and a lovely woman. she grew up a few miles away.. the house she lived in is still the same, its eerie looking, definitely gives you a pit in your stomach!
she was an incredible woman! I even had the chance to interview a man that grew up with her because i was doing a report for school. he said that her mother was very controlling and wouldnt let her come out and play with the other kids, she was made to study the bible and play piano, everyday! i think thats what made her so rebellious. i admire her and wish i could have met her, in a way i feel like i have.
I feel as though you have somehow met her as well. I was first touched by her life when I saw the movie Frances starring Jessica Lange. However, I found out more about her life in later years and became a great admirer. If she lived today, she would be regarded as a hero because of her convictions, her strong character and her unwillingness to conform. I believe her mother turned Frances's life into a tragedy. I am still unclear as to whether or not she really to undergo a lobotomy.
the lobotomy is really a mystery. you should check out the book Shadowlands if you havent already, it is all about frances and her life, and especially when she was institutionalized, and it says alot of things that were later claimed to be untrue. it says she was raped many times by soldiers that the orderlies would let in at night, it says she was given a lobotomy. but we dont know really, i have yet to find someone who can confirm either way! personally though i think it did happen.
@udontgnomiebeee Shadowland is FULL of false things about FF. If you want to see it broken down...do a search for: "Frances Farmer-shedding light on shadowland. A man named Jeffrey Kaufman did extensive research about that book...found...MANY easily researched mistakes . its very interesting..check it out.
@MPL029 did you not read what i wrote?? i said it has alot of things that were later claimed to be untrue, never said that book was 100% truth. its still a good book and there are SOME facts in it. I mean watch the movie frances, its not really all that factual AT ALL. I met a man who grew up with her, and he confirmed what i wanted to know. too long to post on here though!
@Cypher402 What book? Cuz I'm currently reading "Will There Really Be A Morning" and is is the autobio of Farmer. I'm just halfway thru. I hope she finally got rid of that nutty mother.
I have also been to Western State Sanatorium which is the hospital she was placed in, that she got the lobotomy at supposedly. It was torn down partly in the 70's but its a creepy place! lots of upset spirits there, and at Frances's home very disturbing place, completely overgrown, decaying, windows are covered have been for years with blankets and matresses, i knocked on the door and i could see in the window, it looked like someone very disturbed lived there, no one answered. so sad.
@MPL029 because it looks like no one has touched it in 20 yrs, totally out of place for the neighborhood its a prime piece of real estate near the beach and so its a little weird, the roofs caving in, the paint has chipped completely away to reveal a moss covered house, the windows are all covered with mattresses or sheets. lets just say if you were on her street that house would stand the heck out!
They say that true Beauty makes it self known* it needs no introduction because everyone knows it when they see it. She had a true beauty that radiates from her photos as well. Sadly this type of beauty is hard to find these days): hopefully it
Thanks for all your comments Claudia. The music you wanted is 'Lover's Rhapsody' played by the 101 Strings Orchestra. There will be another tribute to Frances Farmer later in the year with all new images. BAZ
@dia33386 Yes what is that music? at 3:08 it is really beautiful. also at the end of the movie "francis" Jessica Lange portraid her ,, there was a beautiful song while they were showing This is your life, That was beautiful music and wish I could fine what it was? :) Frances, a "normal' gal.. lol reallly.
Thanks, BAZ, for this beautiful & reverent video showing many (for me) unseen pics of this so beautiful & tragic woman, Frances Farmer! Again - your giving us Gershwin's magnificent music simply added the right notes!
Shall always remember Ralph Edwards' "This Is Your Life" TV broadcast where Ms Farmer seemed to appear so ill @ ease.
And, most of all - Jessica Lange's unequalled performance (& eerily close resemblence) in 1982's "Frances"!

@MsEdd1e you know jl won that year for tootsie. just shows you that fluff and inaccurate portrayals of alternative lifestyles will always triumph.

What a gorgeous lady! Saw the movie and was just shocked by her sad life. I agree on Jessica Lange - she looked so much like her too.

Ok now I remember seeing her in some old movies.
I am reading her bio now. Between the evil that is Hollywood and an evil, demon-possessed mother, it's a wonder she survived at all.

I did not know that she had a successful tv show in the late 50's and early 1960's.
