DID YOU KNOW BOWIE HAD ONE PERMINANTLY DILATED PUPIL BECAUSE HIS FRIEND HIT HIM IN THE EYE AT SCHOOL I KNOW BECAUSE IT WAS ME ,SORRY DAVE LOL HOPE YOU HAVE FORGIVEN ME
Bowie is a legend, im 27 so wasnt even born when this song was released or to be fair most of his better material, but my mum was a huge fan back in the 70/80's and would play his albums all the time, and for just that i have to thank her!
"I've never done good things... I've never done bad things... i never did anything out of the blue whao' O"... The Lament of average men vocalized brilliantly by an Extraordinary man...
i never liked bowie as a kid and then when i was 15 i saw this video on moby's show 'senor moby's house of music' on mtv and changed my life. he also played joy division that same night, and again changed my life. thank you moby and thank you bowie!
One of the first records I ever bought -I think I was around 11 circa 1981 - anyway it's the most awesome music video of the 1980's and still one of my favorite singles of all time -definitely in my Top10.
This song is about his cocaine addiction. "The action man" and "valuable friend" is the drug. He speaks of wanting to come down. Major Tom is probably him when he's a junkie. I see the Blitz kids in the video with him as representing the drugs because they always chime in when the drug in the song is talking "I'm happy hope you're happy too". There are also Ingmar Bergman and Fellini references in the imagery. I'm guessing Bowie was a fan. Brilliant video and masterpiece of a song!
In case anyone was wondering, the song, space oddity is a really well veiled heroin reference; Major tom is heroin, ground control is the person doing it.
'this is ground control to major tom, you've really made the grade, and the papers want to know, who shot you where.' - good heroin
and I think this song is David bowie's anti heroin revisitation of the situation
"My momma said, to get things done. You'd better not mess with major tom."
@eskiewolf76 I would like to think that they just clicked the wrong button, but I am sad when I think of the state of people who just do not know great music.
it was a great idea revisting major tom. and the video suggests that 'major tom is trapped somewhere out in space and has been since the 1969 video for space oddity, particularly noticable in the last shot
Sometimes when I drink a lot of coffee & become restless, I get the urge to hide in the woods & follow people. Once I chased a Bowie fan for 1/2 a mile through the woods before she collapsed. I poked her in the ribs with a sharp stick for a while until I got bored. She decided I was cool & started kissing me. We made a bed of leaves and . . . . . . . . . . well anyway
When I awoke in the morning she was gone, but she had built a campfire, cooked breakfast & had made a pot of coffee for me.
If Ipod or Ipad had been around when this song came out I would have been like jesus, god almighty, This is the rapture the cazies are all talking about!
@genbai We don't know that yet. I see GaGa as a real artist on the level of Bowie. She is young. Give her some time. I think is funny and she knows it. She means to be ironic in the true sense of the word. Bowie Forever!!!!
If you go onto bad romance by lady gaga there is a dude who is totally hilarous he is going on about gaga like she was something SPECIAL!! :D It will make your day, I know it has made mine ;) BOWIE FOREVERRRRRRRR!!!!!! <33333333333
if you were rating the top 10 videos of all time, this gets in. So scary yet so hilarious. The old woman with Bowie in the freak suit at the end is classic. You better not mess with Major Tom indeed.

Wow, I get that Venture Brothers episode now. They have characters named Major Tom and the Action Man. Check out the episode Ghosts of the Sargasso. And several others have the Action Man, and a lot have David Bowie as a character. Great song.
@thecompton01 Mate, listen to space oddity, they literally take a whole segment of that song and put it in the beginning of the episode in the form of dialogue.
When was young, Bowie was at the height of his career, but I was too young to understand the metaphoric implications of his lyrics and the brilliant symmetry of his music.
I'm 45 now and in my opinion, music hasn't gone much far beyond him.
@nottheborgagain Are you okay? I mean did you come out okay as a human being. Just Kidding. LOL. Great for you and your Mom....Dose she ever talk about what he is like to work with.
@iamariarilke . She wouldn't class it as "working" together, 'cos the crowd actors (extras) don't hang about with the stars. Having said that, he was friendly when signing his autograph. BTW, she was surprised it ended up as a music vid as the whole days where part of shooting the Kenny Everett Show.
The real difference is that Ga Ga will be forgotten(here today, gone tomorrow). Ga G..What the fuck ... Just another dumb ass bitch who barely carries a tune and dresses "HIP'' . Another year, she'll be another 'Pop' memory, unlike Joan Jett; A Woman who rocks(hard, mind you) for the bacon. You fuckers just don't know... While Bowie can still sing me to sleep, while a Ga Ga will weep.

Bowie is a million times better than GaGa. but that doesnt mean shez bad, cuz a million times less thn Bowie is still pretty good. I like tht GaGa is trying to be original, she may rip off madonnas costumes sometimes, but we need people like her in todays music, when trash like Ke$ha is on,who looks like if i touched her i'd get sticky and sings about being drunk.
People are just as harshly critical of Lady G as some retards were of Bowie in his early career.Nuff said I think.Luv em both for different reasons and stop quibbling!
I think the term you're looking for is androgynous. It was quite common in the late 70's/early to mid 80's. Maybe she/he is bringing sexy back? LOL. ;-)

The only similarities between Bowie and Ga Ga is that they are both male

I think the term you're looking for is androgynous. It was quite common in the late 70's/early to mid 80's. Maybe she/he is bringing sexy back? LOL. ;-)

Lady Gaga's name doesn't even deserve to appear on the page of a Bowie video. :)
