I think Abe's a better drummer than he gets credit for. A buddy of mine describes him as "generic," and that's not really fair. His beats are basic, but they've got a lot of intensity and strong groove. That said, Deftones is much more than the sum of its parts.

A big reason Chino calmed down and gained weight during and after White Pony was because he stopped doing massive amounts of speed and coke like he did in the 90s.
good word for it. so many dif songs, so many dif vibes, so many dif feels for the music and the way he projects it. You can listen to digital bath and elite next to each other and totally get this group is special and multi faceted, combined with killer lyrics and a real in touch with the emotion with out being emo greatness is awesome.
chino has an amazing voice, for anyone who disagrees, i'm a vocalist too and id like to see you match chino in the chorus of bored, birthmark, or even in the newer albums like the chorus in hole in the earth, very difficult notes to hit, so you can blow a dog if you think he sucks

Luc Lemay hasn't had a problem, in fact he sounds better now than he did way back in 1991, and the songs he sings are much harder (like even comparable). Difficulty is no excuse for sloppiness. If you can't handle the song then you shouldn't be playing/singing it. He has no power in his voice, and shouldn't be singing this song.
okay for one thing, Chino NEVER sounded all that great live. So does that mean he slacks at singing when they gig? No, it means they use a shitload of studio processing to get it where it is. Especially in White Pony and Saturday Night Wrist. And Gorguts? Come the fuck on. The two types of vocals cant even be compared. The low, gutteral shit isnt near as hard on your cords as the shit chino does.

If he never sounded that great, and it was all due to studio processing then he was a shitty singer to begin with. Whether Luc Lemays vocals are as hard on his vocal cords or not (I think I could argue they, but it's irrelevant), the fact remains he's been doing it longer, and has much more difficult to music to play around, and his vocals are not due to studio magic. Luc sounds great, Chino sounds like shit, and by his own fans admission never sounded great. Hes a second rate vocalist, if that.

Multiplatinum records, and grammies are about as worthy in determining the quality of music as oscars are to films. In other words they're worthless. the whole band is absolutely amazing, they started as just high school kids and really dont even have a knowledge of music theory which is even more amazing
but i think after years of doing this and all those surgeries i think his voice has given in abit
but hopefully chi will get well soon and by then he will have worked on it

dude, Chino is still a great singer, but admit, his screaming lately is crap. He struggles man. I've listened to deftones since 1997 and love every album and song, but his screaming is off point as of what I have heard of as of late.

Luc Lemay hasn't had a problem, in fact he sounds better now than he did way back in 1991, and the songs he sings are much harder (like even comparable). Difficulty is no excuse for sloppiness. If you can't handle the song then you shouldn't be playing/singing it. He has no power in his voice, and shouldn't be singing this song.

okay for one thing, Chino NEVER sounded all that great live. So does that mean he slacks at singing when they gig? No, it means they use a shitload of studio processing to get it where it is. Especially in White Pony and Saturday Night Wrist. And Gorguts? Come the fuck on. The two types of vocals cant even be compared. The low, gutteral shit isnt near as hard on your cords as the shit chino does.

If he never sounded that great, and it was all due to studio processing then he was a shitty singer to begin with. Whether Luc Lemays vocals are as hard on his vocal cords or not (I think I could argue they, but it's irrelevant), the fact remains he's been doing it longer, and has much more difficult to music to play around, and his vocals are not due to studio magic. Luc sounds great, Chino sounds like shit, and by his own fans admission never sounded great. Hes a second rate vocalist, if that.

hhhmmm I don't remember Gorguts being a mulitplatinum band. Or winning a grammy for... anything. I think Deftones' success speaks for itself. and yes, Chino is often a poor live singer in my opinion but to say that his screaming has gone down the tubes is jumping the gun.

So by your definition of success Nsync, and Britney Spears are the greatest modern "music" group/singer. Acclaim by the masses is rarely a determinent of quality. Multiplatinum records, and grammies are about as worthy in determining the quality of music as oscars are to films. In other words they're worthless. Chino is a poor singer, his voice is thanks to the studio, not talent, therefore he's a shitty singer. It's hard to have vocals go down the tubes when they weren't there to begin with.
