1. It is now widely believed that the actual composer of this piece is Francesco Durante, not Pergolesi, and 5 minutes on any musicology site would reveal this. The fact that the director of this group did not know this (since it was put in the program as Pergolesi) is our first hint at a lack of attention to detail or scholarship.
2. I applaud any effort to get children singing serious classical music, so thank you for posting this.
Well done! We also sing this wonderful piece (slower...). I like especially the other movements (Suscepit Israel!!!). BUT: is it really a Pergolesi's piece?! On my ORIGINAL (not copied) partiture there is Francesco Durante, a composer from Napoli, and I was always convinced that he composed this magnificent piece... Who can help me?
Ah, I didn't know that only appreciative comments were allowed here. Your idea appears to be that when something is free, it must be positively appreciated, right?
I don't see your constructive criticism here .... Read your comment statement and you could had said differently than what you have said. Camera was set up before hand and it was zoomed in/out to film orchestra and the choir while still trying to listen to music. I did not have time to just focus on the camera alone for you to have such negative words.
The tenors scream, the soprano's don't focus, the orchestra is too loud and muddled, and the camera focuses on people who don't sing. I find it hard to find any reasons on why to compliment you. Compliments go out to the compositor of the piece, who died too young. If ever it was Giovanni Battista Pergolesi.
From the POV of someone who's performed this piece myself, a) the choir can't be held to account for the deficiencies of the camera work; b) it's likely that the orchestra only seem too loud because that's the nature of camcorder audio capture and "live" it would've be fine; and c) for a young choir singing without copy (not easy as some of the entries are really tricky with this one) I think they acquitted themselves admirably. Orchestra's great by the way, you lucky people!!
This is a beautiful song, my choir sang this in orchestra hall earlier this year at orchestra hall in chicago. You guys really did a fantastic job on it. ^_^
I hope you will continue posting video to Youtube. I particularly enjoy your organ videos. It would be my wish that for you, as a young organist, you be able to play on some of the major instruments, particularly in Europe.
Not that there is anything wrong with the instruments you use, but to hear such performances on some of the historic insturments would be truly awsome. May your talent and ambition be a blessing throughout your life. Best wishes.
This is my favorite choral piece ever. The choir performed it very well. Please, post all the movements here!

concordo con quello detto da mich52586
esecuzine a dir poco oscena...i tenori sono perennemente calanti..i bassi e contralti inesistenti

Our choir sang this last weekend, it was so hard to figure out the right tempo - my teacher kept changing it. :U So irritating.
The whole Magnificat is absolutely splendid though. :)

Doing this song in my chamber choir at the moment.
I'm a bass, and that seems to be the toughest part :(

they seem a little young for a difficult piece like this
at least when I did this as a sophomore, I had like experienced juniors and seniors with me

lol dont listen to this bitter person. It's great, though not the best performance, but it's still pleasant to hear!

This piece was in fact written by Francesco Durante, Pergolesi's teacher. Pergolesi *gasp* plagiarized it.
liddybird 4 years ago
Plagiarism is a common feature of Baroque music. Even Pergolesi's Stabat Mater is based on Scarlatti's setting.
