Excellent piece Bert! All of you are great, but I agree that Slidin' Selena is a really good trombonist. You are also really good Bert. All the best from a Dixieland music lover from Spain. If you come here please let me know!!
very good music, all your YOUTUBE videos are good and thanks for sending your DVD to me in England, keep jazzing, especially as I guess there are not many ladies in jazz who blow a slide trombone, all members of the band perform well
great fat trombone sound, and good "period" sound from the trumpet, but the vocals are atonal, the voice would suit death metal more than this band!!!
Although Super Bowl is not very wellknown here in Europe, I want to congratulate, since I really love N.O. I was there in 1996 and 2004 and both times were great. Especially the musicians were so nice.... hope to be able to play there again in the future!
As a native Louisianian, I must say you've really done a fantastic job! You've captured the Spirit of New Orleans through your instruments! Vive la Louisiane!!
I played in N.O. twice, in the year 1996 while working on a cruise ship, but having 3 days off in Louisiana. Again in 2004, both times were a big thrill! Loved it there. The second time was also with Selena our girl trombone player, she was a big hit there!
It`s a great band, the music is very joyful, when i play this particular song makes me feel happy, in my city (I live in Chile) there`s a jazz band who played this kind of music and i think they`re really great, they`re not young at all, but they play it with such an entusiasm like 18 year old boys.
Yes, of course it's great that we all can communicate with each other in the English language, but I don't expect to read high art poetry in that, from someone who was raised with another language.
Awesome! Incredible! Great! The only complain is about Koos's voice. It wasn't so good... Anyway... excellent brass!! Unfortunately you may never come to Brazil, but i'll watch all of your videos! Greetings!
Wooww, amazing! I think I watched this vid thousand times. You are great!!! I love dixieland and I have to say I love your band. It seems to me one of the best ones nowadays. Great work! A lot depends on how the condition is and in what year it was made. The best horns have serial numbers between 240.000 and 300.000.

Hello there in New-Sealand. The name of the alto player is Bert Brandsma. The horn is a special pro series made by Conn between 1935 and 1943 called : Connqueror 26M
This one was made in 1937
Conn had split bell low notes on alto and tenor till about 1930, then they both went to this side.
Well, thanks for the compliment. The Clarinet is less spectacular, just an ordinary Buffet Crampon RC, maybe 15 years old. I studied sax, and thus see my vintage saxes as little treasures. Clarinet is just extra fun that I didn't really studie. I once played first clarinet in the Cologne Opera house, doubling alto and tenor, but that was really a hard job.
I think I said already that I have a Martin Alto. But also a German Rotary Valve Trombone, I played in 1964 with the Munich Allstars, Oscar Klein played the Trumpet.
Our trumpet player, Michel once played with Oscar as well. Oscar used to be quite famous in our country because of the years he spent with the Dutch Swing College.
I do have a Martin Bass saxophone, but that one is from 1921 and in reality a conn stencil. Martin never made basses themselves.
Strong words partner! I think we must arrange for our Seconds to meet and arrange the duel to champion our heroines sometime! (have a look at the comments from ilbofilms accompanying his Christopher Columbus 2007 posting from the Stockamollan festival, to see how much I a

FunkeyChunkeyMonkey0 2 years ago
To me there is nothing sarcastic about writing a good Dixieland piece. In fact it is a great idea. Dixieland bands worldwide have been playing the same pieces again and again a bit too long. New pieces should be composed!
Besides, the march form, or as you wish Ragtime form resulted in some of the more interesting numbers in trad jazz.
Something that is a bit neglected in many modern jazz, that too often takes the melody - solo - melody form.

i was wondering, and sorry for all the questions.... how about conns from the early 1900s, like before the 30s and 20s?
finalzenith 3 years ago
The earlier, the greater the risk.
My straight soprano from 29 is good. Bass sax from 21 is OK. But another from 1919 I tried was very poor in matters of in tune playing.
Some of the old ones however have very beautifull engravings. They have collecters value when in good shape.
1930's almost always play great.
Before 1920 is tricky.
ABrandsma 3 years ago
oh and i must say, great work, it takes a real master to make a clarinet sing like that
finalzenith 3 years ago
hey bert, what kind of sax do you use/prefer?
finalzenith 3 years ago
I have 12 saxes right now, different brands.
My favourite alto right now is the Conn Connqueror that you hear on this video. It was made in 1937.
I enjoy playing any kind of sax, lately I did a few big band dates on baritone, there I used a buesher from the 1950's.
It all depends on the kind of work what sax is best suited.
Kind regards,
Bert Brandsma

You guys kind of remind me of Percy Humphrey's Crescent City Joymakers and the Preservation hall Jazz band from back in the sixties.
Both were excellent bands :)

You are right about the quality of the equipment. The mike itself was not that bad, but the stuff behind it just too poor.
Thanks for all your kind comments.

Hello whoever plays the Alto(and very well), is it a Martin from the 60's? because the Doors for the low notes are on the other side?
valvetrom 4 years ago
Hello there in New-Sealand. The name of the alto player is Bert Brandsma. The horn is a special pro series made by Conn between 1935 and 1943 called : Connqueror 26M
This one was made in 1937
Conn had split bell low notes on alto and tenor till about 1930, then they both went to this side.

Thank you , I was born in 1937, your clarinet sounds good too(because you play it well.
valvetrom 4 years ago
Well, thanks for the compliment. The Clarinet is less spectacular, just an ordinary Buffet Crampon RC, maybe 15 years old. I studied sax, and thus see my vintage saxes as little treasures. Clarinet is just extra fun that I didn't really studie. I once played first clarinet in the Cologne Opera house, doubling alto and tenor, but that was really a hard job.

I think I said already that I have a Martin Alto. But also a German Rotary Valve Trombone, I played in 1964 with the Munich Allstars, Oscar Klein played the Trumpet.
valvetrom 4 years ago
Our trumpet player, Michel once played with Oscar as well. Oscar used to be quite famous in our country because of the years he spent with the Dutch Swing College.
I do have a Martin Bass saxophone, but that one is from 1921 and in reality a conn stencil. Martin never made basses themselves.
Good horn!
