  • Excellent piece Bert! All of you are great, but I agree that Slidin' Selena is a really good trombonist. You are also really good Bert. All the best from a Dixieland music lover from Spain. If you come here please let me know!!

  • The folks in the audience look kind of confused in the beginning, lol. But i like this version of it, it's pretty awesome!

  • Awesome! Great bass player too!

  • @itsbanffdavehere Henk is a legend, played even with Ben Webster!

  • Bert you were amazing man!!!

  • very good music, all your YOUTUBE videos are good and thanks for sending your DVD to me in England, keep jazzing, especially as I guess there are not many ladies in jazz who blow a slide trombone, all members of the band perform well

    Bert Brandsma

  • beauty trombone

  • @kantantus Trombone or player?

  • @ABrandsma trombone and player

  • @ABrandsma I think they mean the player ;D Mastery of a musical instrument is in no way a detriment to an already lovely woman. lol

  • So many voices and what a musical kindness. Very nice! Best regards from Brazil!

  • Great Full Sound. This is why I love you guys

  • Thanks for the nice comment!

    Kind regards,

    Bert Brandsma

  • buenisimo!!!!! LOS FELICITO!!! desde Chile, amo el Dixieland desde 1997

    afectuosos saludos para uds. !!!

  • great fat trombone sound, and good "period" sound from the trumpet, but the vocals are atonal, the voice would suit death metal more than this band!!!

  • Why is Koos a 'singing chainsaw'?

BTW: When he spoke in the 'Heck' video of Beale Street Blues, he spoke like a chainsaw.

  • the just screams usa to me

  • Slidin' Selena is pretty. I think I love her.

  • terrific!

  • Way to go New Orleans Saints!!!!!!!!!!!

    Super Bowl XLIV Champions!!!!!

  • Although Super Bowl is not very wellknown here in Europe, I want to congratulate, since I really love N.O. I was there in 1996 and 2004 and both times were great. Especially the musicians were so nice.... hope to be able to play there again in the future!

  • Wonderful. Made me smile!

  • As a native Louisianian, I must say you've really done a fantastic job! You've captured the Spirit of New Orleans through your instruments! Vive la Louisiane!!

  • I played in N.O. twice, in the year 1996 while working on a cruise ship, but having 3 days off in Louisiana. Again in 2004, both times were a big thrill! Loved it there. The second time was also with Selena our girl trombone player, she was a big hit there!

  • When the Saints go playing, the audience goes nuts! Thanks! :-))))

  • It`s a great band, the music is very joyful, when i play this particular song makes me feel happy, in my city (I live in Chile) there`s a jazz band who played this kind of music and i think they`re really great, they`re not young at all, but they play it with such an entusiasm like 18 year old boys.

Congratulations! (and sorry for my bad english)

  • Your English is good enough, so that we can communicate. That's great. We both were not born in Oxford!

    Kind regards,

    Bert Brandsma

  • @ABrandsma - Like ure attitude " We R not born in Oxford!"

  • Yes, of course it's great that we all can communicate with each other in the English language, but I don't expect to read high art poetry in that, from someone who was raised with another language.

  • Love this stuff

  • From the info on the side: "No two performances are the same"

    The way music should be...

  • Fun and amazing!!! You can feel the atmosphere in that croud all over thru the net.

Wonderfully musical, full of joy and did I say fun already? :-)

    Shalom! :-)

  • i got cheery when i see old ppl happy ^_^

  • Old and young are relative..... haha

    Thanks for watching!

    BB

  • im gonna say that now lol

  • bravissima Selena!!!!! fantastica...come dite voi...wonderful!!!!! ciao, simone

  • the song that leads you to God...

  • Very impressed with your lady trombonist!! Marvelous technique, sound and a very fine solo!!

I, myself play trombone in the dutch band Jazz Connection( look us up, were also on the tube)

Greetings, Peter van Steen and I hope to meet you one time!

  • There are allready people in the USA who have trancribed Selena's improvisation on this one!

    Thanks for the comment,

    Kind regards,

    Bert Brandsma

  • Awesome! Incredible! Great! The only complain is about Koos's voice. It wasn't so good... Anyway... excellent brass!! Unfortunately you may never come to Brazil, but i'll watch all of your videos! Greetings!

  • One needs to experience Koos in a life situation, then you will feel his magic.

    Thanks!

    Bert

  • we love you Crackerjacks!!

  • Wooww, amazing! I think I watched this vid thousand times. You are great!!! I love dixieland and I have to say I love your band. It seems to me one of the best ones nowadays. Great work! And about this song, it's one of my favourite standarts, and the arrengment is fantastic! Please, come to Spain!!! Have I go to the Netherland to see you?

  • Last year we played in Portugal, that would have been much closer to you.

We would love to play in Spain, so if you ever know someone who could book us in your country, please recommend us!

    Kind regards,

    Bert Brandsma

  • I think this was great. I will see you in portugal or UK if you are performing there?

  • I hope people in those countries will book our band again.

    BB

  • Selena I most love you!!! By Peppy Maniglia from Sony-bmg Music Italy

  • We just recorded 16 tracks for a new CD, including this title.

Might it be something for Sony music to bring it out under their label?

    Kind regards,

Bert Brandsma & Slidin' Selena and the others.

  • come down to Greece people :))

  • wow, this is brilliant :D

i have to compose a march for my music GCSE, so im going to get sarcastic, and write something like a dixieland march :P

  • To me there is nothing sarcastic about writing a good Dixieland piece. In fact it is a great idea. Dixieland bands worldwide have been playing the same pieces again and again a bit too long. New pieces should be composed!

Besides, the march form, or as you wish Ragtime form resulted in some of the more interesting numbers in trad jazz.

Something that is a bit neglected in many modern jazz, that too often takes the melody - solo - melody form.

Jelly Roll Morton made some nice form stuff.

  • very good

  • Thank you! I visited the Dominican Republic way back in 1996!

    Kind regards,

    BB

  • Very nice job! When I was a kid, there were ragtime bands all over the States. Now you hardly see them anymore - it's a shame really... Let me know if you ever come to NYC!!!

  • Thanks for your nice comment, we would love to play in the USA, but I don't have any contacts there yet who could help organising such event.

    Kind regards,

    Bert Brandsma

  • WOOOW

  • this is awesome! good job

  • COOL MEN!!!!!! I am argentino SAMUEL

  • Hello Samuel, nice to meet you!

  • when I heard this music, I think in all problems they had to be free, now all is different and we can enjoy all time we want

  • LOUIS AMSTRONG "THE BEST"

  • Of course you are right.

  • These guys are the GREAT ones! I love this song so much that I played all four parts in my saxophone quartet at gergie2 in youtube. Go see it!

  • woot woot sax!!!!!!

  • THIS IS PERFECT.

  • ok bert brandsma is officially the man. haha youre an amazing clarinet player

  • That is some high quality trombone playing.

  • Selena I love you!

  • troppo simpatico frank!

  • 2:05-2:09...It makes you wanna stand up and scream with joy!

  • Thank your for sharing! I understand your feelings, did the same when I was soooo much younger and danced on the music of a Student Jazz Orchestra from Holland, Leiden, with "Carnaval", I loved it, and yes: that feeling was there!! So, we do share more than a video!! :))

  • And I am here once again, now as the Jazz-channel I have too, to fave it, because of that beautiful memory of the past!

And of course because this is a wonderful band!!

  • Wow, this group is great. i really enjoyed this video. The trombone, "Slidin' Selena," chick is very talented and plays wonderfully!

  • Sometimes we did and still do play at funerals, like in the New Orleans tradition!

  • My favourite video from the Crackerjacks!!Bert shows the way!(2:06-2:09).;)

  • bello davvero.. bravi!

  • yeah that's great no no wymiata,TRADYCJA dixieland ;p;d

  • loved this arrangement! very nice work!

  • Hi Stephen,

We learned the basics of the songs, by using our ears and learning them from records by jazz greats like Louis Armstrong or Duke Ellington. Then we came together and more or less made the arrangements ourselves. Some of them were written down first, and then memorised, others just getting together and play and improvise, like this one.

If you watch very carefully you can hear me shout new keys at the end. This was kind of spontanious during this performance and new for bandmembers

  • EXCELLENT!

  • really great. They are all great musicians

  • bello!

  • Gracië!

  • Please, this video is not about politics, it's about music!

  • Music is the best thing that ever happened to humanity. Money being the worst.

  • i loved this song when i was younger i made it into a tru jame love that dixi music

  • I am thinking about buying a 6M, how are they in terms of Intonation and Keywork, I heard they have a beautiful singing tone.

  • A lot depends on how the condition is and in what year it was made. The best horns have serial numbers between 240.000 and 300.000.

Only take horns with original lacquer. (Relacquering can cause unsolvable problems)

The intonation of these horns is outright professional, Keywork is good exept for the left hand pink table, that could have been done better. In fact the Connqueror 26M variations have a better left hand pink table.

    Succes!

    Bert Brandsma

  • osteria che bravi!

  • grazie cordiali

    saluti

    Bert Brandsma

  • Nice 'bone solo. What bore size is that King? Looks like a 4B .525

  • It's a king 3B.

    Thanks for watching.

    BB

  • I'm wondering : what make of clarinet do you prefer? I'm a jazz clarinetist as well.

another question : what type/size of reeds do you prefer?

  • Prefer is a bit a strong word, since I never tried others. While I studied sax, at a certain point I was asked in an ensemble with two real clarinettists. I was supposed to play lead alto, and double third clarinet. Just to mix with the two others I simply bought the same brand as theirs, buffet crampon rc.

On all saxes and clarinet I use Vandoren classical size 3 reeds. Easy with doubling.

Choice of horn/reeds is always personal, what works for me doesn't work for everyone.

    Succes!

    Bert

  • I agree that it's not the same for everyone. I was wondering mostly about size, because people like Benny Goodman and Artie Shaw sometimes would use quite small reeds, whereas others swear by 4s. I also use 3s at present.

    That's cool though.

I forgot to say as well : that clarinet solo was ridiculous. Good stuff man. I will definitely be watching some more of your vids.

  • i was wondering, and sorry for all the questions.... how about conns from the early 1900s, like before the 30s and 20s?

  • The earlier, the greater the risk.

My straight soprano from 29 is good. Bass sax from 21 is OK. But another from 1919 I tried was very poor in matters of in tune playing.

Some of the old ones however have very beautifull engravings. They have collecters value when in good shape.

    1930's almost always play great.

    Before 1920 is tricky.

  • oh and i must say, great work, it takes a real master to make a clarinet sing like that

  • hey bert, what kind of sax do you use/prefer?

  • I have 12 saxes right now, different brands.

My favourite alto right now is the Conn Connqueror that you hear on this video. It was made in 1937.

I enjoy playing any kind of sax, lately I did a few big band dates on baritone, there I used a buesher from the 1950's.

It all depends on the kind of work what sax is best suited.

    Kind regards,

    Bert Brandsma

  • ok thanks... i was leaning more towards brand, but thats interesting, bari has a smooth sound for sure :)

  • Well, my favourite brand in general is Conn, but you have to be sure that it is from the good years, say between 1934 and 1940. After Worldwar two, the generally lost their high quality.

  • thanks for the info... its sad that they dont make em like they used to!haha cheers

  • That certainly is very sad indeed! When you know about the secrets of the Conn Connqueror... hmmmmm really love it. It's a lost art how well they made them during that time.

  • stir my passion! how i wish to play like you,the passion! love you all!

  • Hey, whether people think you're hot or not, Selena--your trombone playing skills are indeed hot! Awesome job! I've been playing for 8 years and I dig the dixieland style! Great job! You all sound great!

  • great sax solo at the start

  • Thanks!

  • Absolutely fantastic! The song is the unofficial anthem of Saint Mirren Football Club from Paisley in Scotland. We sing it at every home game. Great to hear such a lively and clever version.

  • So, now we hope that they will invite us to play in Scotland!

    Kind regards,

    Bert Brandsma

  • That would get my vote!

  • It is not completely definite yet, but most likely we will play at the Birmingham Jazz Festival in July. I know that's not Scotland! But anyway it's UK, we are looking forward to it!

  • That's only a few hours drive from where I live. I may drive down to see you perform. I'll be the one wearing the St Mirren shirt!

  • Birmingham, Alabama I hope. Just kidding I saw the UK. But really, do you do any US shows? Afterall Dixieland is Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee...

  • Selena and I played several gigs as guest with the Storyville Brassband and Dukes of Dixieland in New Orleans around halloween 2004. I also played in New York, San Francisco and Tampa as a guest earlier. It's hard however to get the band over, because of the strict green card rules in the US.

We would love to go again!

    Kind regards,

    Bert Brandsma

  • really toe tapping music absolutely loved it. cindy

  • Wena la Selena wen tronbom

  • Selena, inspite of you are not looking like for ex. Helena Vondrackova your trombone solo is the best I have ever heard! I fel in love with your trombone:-) Brilliant dixieland, this is real music.

  • Selena does not care what people think about her looks. She is a musician, loves music, that's what counts.

It's a bit unfair that female musicians are immediatly rated after how they look. There are deffinitly better looking men on this world then the 5 on this stage, but nobody does mention that fact!

    But thanks for watching anyhow!

    Kind regards,

    Bert Brandsma

  • Wow, sweet trombone sound and greatest band, i love that version!!!

  • Great to see that also in Peru people like our music!

    Thanks for listening.

    Bert Brandsma

  • dude, everybody will love your music....

  • i dig your skills bert

  • Well... thanks!

Nice to hear that you enjoy it!

    Kind regards,

    Bert

  • this is great dixieland is the only way to go

  • You guys kind of remind me of Percy Humphrey's Crescent City Joymakers and the Preservation hall Jazz band from back in the sixties.

    Both were excellent bands :)

  • Bravo!!! beautiful.

  • swingin!

  • The best version of WTSGMI than I have listened!

    Congratulations! :)

  • Abosoutly astounding!!I just wish that Koos's vocal mike had been a little bit hotter!Well done by everyone. My best to all. I am G.R.M. Bwk. Ga.(U.S.A.)

  • You are right about the quality of the equipment. The mike itself was not that bad, but the stuff behind it just too poor.

Thanks for all your kind comments.

    Bert

  • Dude i would love to jam with your band, im a trumpet player my self

  • Well, if there ever is a possibility I will invite you on the stage.

Bob Erwig from Canada actually did jam with us, by the way.

    Kind regards,

    Bert Brandsma

  • wow, i enjoyed this thoroughly! great sound and everything

  • Great trombonist!

  • She certainly is!

    Thanks.

  • That's awesome, indeed... !!! I loved expecially the Sax intro - very creative !

  • great stuff but the bass sax is sure missed

  • I'm sorry, can't play bass sax and clarinet at the same time! Thanks for visiting our videos. Bert

  • thanks for uploading this video i have been looking for a good cover of this song for ages

  • Not so much Burt. Weak poop.

  • Hello whoever plays the Alto(and very well), is it a Martin from the 60's? because the Doors for the low notes are on the other side?

  • Hello there in New-Sealand. The name of the alto player is Bert Brandsma. The horn is a special pro series made by Conn between 1935 and 1943 called : Connqueror 26M

This one was made in 1937

Conn had split bell low notes on alto and tenor till about 1930, then they both went to this side.

  • Thank you , I was born in 1937, your clarinet sounds good too(because you play it well.

  • Well, thanks for the compliment. The Clarinet is less spectacular, just an ordinary Buffet Crampon RC, maybe 15 years old. I studied sax, and thus see my vintage saxes as little treasures. Clarinet is just extra fun that I didn't really studie. I once played first clarinet in the Cologne Opera house, doubling alto and tenor, but that was really a hard job.

  • I think I said already that I have a Martin Alto. But also a German Rotary Valve Trombone, I played in 1964 with the Munich Allstars, Oscar Klein played the Trumpet.

  • Our trumpet player, Michel once played with Oscar as well. Oscar used to be quite famous in our country because of the years he spent with the Dutch Swing College.

I do have a Martin Bass saxophone, but that one is from 1921 and in reality a conn stencil. Martin never made basses themselves.

    Good horn!

  • I love this! My granddad named their mansion "Dixieland". Like our family name..dix :)) Sure that happy energy leaked into our family!!x

  • I used to play that good ol' Dixieland Jazz or Jass as they used to call it... Those were some good times...

  • Nice

  • Let's call it a draw! Sweden/UK 1 - Germany/Holland 1

  • Strong words partner! I think we must arrange for our Seconds to meet and arrange the duel to champion our heroines sometime! (have a look at the comments from ilbofilms accompanying his Christopher Columbus 2007 posting from the Stockamollan festival, to see how much I a
