For everyone asking for advice - GO TO THE DAMN VET!!! Distemper is rarely treatable. You CANNOT fight this alone. And don't forget to get your dog their shots. If you don't go, your dog will most likely DIE. So stop asking and get going.
1.)Dr. Wendell O. Belfield, DVM, a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, is leading the way in revolutionizing veterinary practises. He uses large doses sodium ascorbate therapy to treat distemper. The dose level was begun at one-half gram per pound of body weight(yes, that's correct) administered intravenously twice daily. With dosages this high, Dr. Belfield uses the sodium ascorbate form of Vitamin C as opposed to the ascorbic acid form.
2.) The intravenous preparations used were made from crystals to avoid sodium bisulphate, a preservative in the commercially available intravenous products, which can cause nerve problems when given at high dosages. He stressed that once this process was started NOT TO INTERRUPT IT FOR ANY REASON not even if the pet appeared to be feeling better or seemed fully recovered before the five days were up because he says "treatment broken off in the middle permits the virus to come back."
3.)For vets who want to read on Dr. W, O. Belfield's cure for distemper:

Omg this made me cry. It reminded me of my Husky puppy, he had distemper and little by little I watched how this horrendous disease was killing him. We had to put him down because we couldnt watch him suffering like that. I was very little, like 8-9...i was so traumatized after this that I didnt got another dog until I was 18.
I cannot say this enough times: if your dog is ill, go to a qualified vet immediately. If you have not, get your pets vaccinated - spend the money to prevent illness.

A minute before the seizure his eyes had been buldging in and out of his head. Its the cruelist death I have ever expreienced. Especiialy that I had just finished his full training
Please someone - I just asked my Vet here in Brasil and she said that the dog in this video is just a mixed breed strieet dog. But it cant be. My dog just died last week aged three and looks EXACTLY the same as this dog - every single hair, the paws, the tail EVERYTHING. EXACTLY. It must be a breed? @agl704 seriously c'mon... People take your damn pets to the vet and get their shots.
If you're too broke or busy to do that, you shouldn't have gotten a pet in the first place. Know if you're even suitable to have the luxury of owning pets before you get one. People working at the animal shelters have to put up with so much shit in America today because if human irresponsibility. (FYI, it's way cheaper to go to a vet beforehand rather than after your pet gets sick)
@laurajdahl If your dog has been bitten by a racoon, you must consult a vet in your area. They will have a good idea what diseases are common and communicable. A top concern is rabies.
@laurajdahl@laurajdahl If your dog has been bitten by a raccoon, you must consult a vet in your area. They will have a good idea what diseases are common and communicable. A top concern is rabies.
If you have a dog you suspect has distemper, immediately take it to a proper veternarian. There is no good substitute for proper medical care as soon as possible.
Our rescue group had one case of distemper. Luckily our Lola survived but only after $1,200 in meds, 14 days of SubQ IV fluids, 10 days of eating absolutely nothing and 6 months of recovery. She never had seizures (that we saw) nor did she have any blindness or neuro damage occur. She is a very lucky dog and is now in a wonderful adoptive home. At one point the width of her lower back was only the width of the her spinal column. The day she ate her first bite of food was a joyous day for us all.
Dog can die at any point in disease, neuro signs can take up to 16 weeks to surface not all dogs show neuro signs, virus is shed at day 3 and has been known to be shed up to 16 weeks postinfection with or with clinical signs. Survival/ time-line is highly dependent on dog and strain of virus. Mortality can exceed 50% (+/-20%) of dogs who show neuro signs plus additional mortality from secondary infections. Anyone heard of Dr. Sears? Dr. Sears does provide a free serum to veterinarians with canine distemper cases. He claims the serum provides a 99% cure rate for dogs with distemper - as long as it's injected within the first two days of the first signs of illness BUT BEFORE THE FIRST SEIZURES.
For decades, Dr. Alson Sears' protocol has saved dogs in the early stages of the disease, before it breaches the blood-brain barrier. There has been a new development in the protocol allowing for dogs to be cured even in the advanced stages of the disease.
In the later stages, the protocol required is far more invasive. The Newcastle Disease vaccine (normally used to immunize chickens against a virus related to distemper) is injected intravenously and, if the dog has been sick more than six days (when the virus breaches the blood brain barrier), the vaccine is also injected into the cerebrospinal fluid.
- Dogs cannot become infected with the newcastle virus but, because it's related to the distemper virus, it prompts an immune response that cures the dog of Canine Distemper Virus and stops the progression of the disease. While the dog is cured of distemper within a couple of days, it may take weeks or months to recover from neurologic disease.
I have a dog that has distemper. He is on the video on here "sunshine distemper" He had distemper when he was 3 months. I gave him clavamox and nutrocal (vitamins) and that was it. I kept him and everything around him very clean. Just dont give up. There are no meds made for "distemper". Your pup might look really sick but they will pull through...my heart goes out to all of you with pups that had this horrible virus
My dog died yesterday May 18,2009, we had to put our little golden retriever lincoln to sleep. We did everything we could to save him, we had him on tons of medication. We did everything possible, we even considered getting a serum for him, but that wasn't safe. We bought our puppy from a pet store, which was unfortunate that they didn't care for the puppy. They expose these babies to other sick dogs, grab them from puppy mills and they are sick. I wish I would have known. My heart aches!!!!!
My dog had distemper when he was like a year old. We did all what we could do then. It was horrible. I cryied the whole day. But, a few days later, as a miracle, he was healthy. Now he's like 4 years old. He can run, move his tail normally, eat like always... My Tommy and I were lucky, and I thank God for that. I wish you can have a second oportunity like that...
My dog had a canine distemper he is 2 months and my mother told me that he need to put to sleep but i dont wanna give up him so he is suffering seizures now and the vet is reviving him.,, i wish my dog survive
I had a puppy that died of distemper also. It's a really ugly thing to see and to be honest, I did think about putting her to sleep myself but just didn't know how. :(

Going to have to make a decision real soon...
I love animals. Especially dogs. I thought about being a veterinarian - but I'm not strong enough to handle cases like this emotionally. I hope that this puppy was given a humane death before suffering much longer.

Poor animal. They should show this on TV, maybe more people would vaccinate. So sad and so easy to prevent. In my area you can even get shots for free at some clinics if you can't pay.
