Hi, I have an idea that can certainly help with the conflicts going on in the Middle East.
The ADWS is operated from a computer so therefore the weapon can be programmed to fire at certain things. What I'm proposing is that the American soldiers+ allies should be outfitted with beacons that make the ADWS (such as the Sentry gun shown in this video) differentiate between threats and our 'men'. I would really like feedback on this comment because I think that we'd have a great advantage if used.

The metal storm weapons are sequentially fired, meaning the rounds are all in the tube sequentially and fire from front to back. Check the 40mm grenade metal storm demo to see reloading action.
Metal Storm is a terrible concept... what happens when the computer controlling it glitches and doesn't send the "fire" command correctly? At least with a normal 40mm cannon you can fix a jam without having to replace entire parts (unless something actually breaks). With this you have to go out to the gun and replace electronics while being shot at and while sand is blowing into it.
Thats a good point but the only thing the comp. needs to do is send a electric charge to the rounds, really not that complicated. Oh and there are no moving parts so it cant really "jam".
This was discussed on the future weapons show. If there is a dud round, firing the next sequential round behind it simply pushes the dud round out of the chamber.
Obviously this is only a technology demonstrator: a finished product wouldn't have wires sticking out all over the place. The concept is sound- it's really a matter of how much a pain in the ass it would be to completely revamp the logistical train and the inherently conservative (and usually rightly so) military attitude toward new concepts.

But I would like to point out that the main benefit of this gun over say, a landmine is that it in fact does not attack everything, but has a 'man in the loop' system which means that it can only attack a target if a person gives the go ahead. This saves lives as it allows the soldier to defend an area without being shot at.

It can't track long range targets, or fire at long range, but this is not a huge drawback as it is designed for area denial, say defending an outpost or similar building. I dont know about tanks, i doubt that the 40mm grenades would make it through their armour.
the easiest way to explain this is forcefully pitching the same spot befor the metal has time to reflect the next more n more with such accuracy that it makes a hole basicly in 4 spots in that guns case , it also can be programmed to shoot them in a spear like formation which shoots a rod of molten lead straight through whatever its hitting =) hope i helped

Google "Talisman Sabre" and the older "Tandem Thrust". The difference is the USMC guys are good but they spend their time in Okinawa and Korea in barracks or on ships. The RAR (Royal Australian Regiment) guys based in QLD spend their time doing remote coastal patrols in some of the worlds harshest conditions. The USMC is definitely a force to be reckoned with but they cant hack the field craft required in Australia. They will come back though and learn more and more so good on 'em.

m60's do have "magazines" of a sort, They have do (disposiable)attachable belt caseing that comes preload loaded, Though they when in a fixed position and borderline cooking the cased ammo becomes a jamming and misfire issue.

It shouldn't be installed on a M1 Abrams tank. That's too big. A smaller tank - remote controlled - would be ideal. It should be fitted with a box of barrels - less complicated - and the barrels can be light weight - only useful for that one mission - before recycling.

Metal Storm is a terrible concept... what happens when the computer controlling it glitches and doesn't send the "fire" command correctly? At least with a normal 40mm cannon you can fix a jam without having to replace entire parts (unless something actually breaks). With this you have to go out to the gun and replace electronics while being shot at and while sand is blowing into it.

Thats a good point but the only thing the comp. needs to do is send a electric charge to the rounds, really not that complicated. Oh and there are no moving parts so it cant really "jam".

Obviously this is only a technology demonstrator: a finished product wouldn't have wires sticking out all over the place. The concept is sound- it's really a matter of how much a pain in the ass it would be to completely revamp the logistical train and the inherently conservative (and usually rightly so) military attitude toward new concepts.

The system was developed in Townsville and prototyped at UQ . Australian Government invested several million dollars. US Govt through DARPA also invested in the development. Funding required was way out of Australia's resurces.

I would like to congratulate you on your clearly extensive knowledge of both the service record of the Regiment that beeching31 serves in, and of the area denial system. But I would like to point out that the main benefit of this gun over say, a landmine is that it in fact does not attack everything, but has a 'man in the loop' system which means that it can only attack a target if a person gives the go ahead. This saves lives as it allows the soldier to defend an area without being shot at.

feel free to ask anything else, the easiest way to think of this one is like seeing it as a car going down the highway really fast then having a few people follow behind on the EXACT SAME PATH, cutting the wind resistance, saving fuel, plus they are PERFECT cylinders, making it easier for them to go straight =) unlike a genereal bullet which tends to melt mid air...powerful program, perfect ammo shape...this is the closest i can think of considerring its still top secret detail wise ^-^

way off, a rail gun is an electromagnetically charged gun that uses something as simple as a thick iron spear about 1/2 feet long, charged with oscilating magnetic currents which basicly pull/push it at the same time forcing the projectile(never been used with explosives only duds which destroy anything they hit) forcing it past the speed of sound to about 2000fps and making it a molten explosive which takes about half kilometer to launch there working on making one short as a cruiser/carrier

actually it is amazingly accurate, (im not 100% sure how they do it but i have a good idea, it does work in practice and theory =) ) and it works just as good on composite as steel/uranium plating, its kinda scary , the only drawback in this is the fact it works best in short bursts, with this in mind its just one of MANY toys they putting out there, its not like they rely just on it and have other tools for other tasks =) hope i helped

its actually thanks to a few eggheads down at lockheed(i THINK thats wher ethis comes from, i dont care if its not,...its still some eggheads somewhere lol) who came up with some extremely powerful algorithms wich allow the computers to track everything simultaniously and not lagg, they can launch it staght because of the exactly uniform shape of the ammo. it cuts through the wind behind the first ones and always follows path of least resist, making the shots follow a uniform line,

It can't track long range targets, or fire at long range, but this is not a huge drawback as it is designed for area denial, say defending an outpost or similar building. I dont know about tanks, i doubt that the 40mm grenades would make it through their armour.

the easiest way to explain this is forcefully pitching the same spot befor the metal has time to reflect the next more n more with such accuracy that it makes a hole basicly in 4 spots in that guns case , it also can be programmed to shoot them in a spear like formation which shoots a rod of molten lead straight through whatever its hitting =) hope i helped

Google "Talisman Sabre" and the older "Tandem Thrust". The difference is the USMC guys are good but they spend their time in Okinawa and Korea in barracks or on ships. The RAR (Royal Australian Regiment) guys based in QLD spend their time doing remote coastal patrols in some of the worlds harshest conditions. The USMC is definitely a force to be reckoned with but they cant hack the field craft required in Australia. They will come back though and learn more and more so good on 'em.

Metal storm needs years to become operative.We hear 1 000 000 per minute and are amazed, but the truth is that in all these barels there are less bullets than in the M60 magazine and this problem can't be corrected yet.And this is the reason no army in the world has taken this weapon.

m60's do have "magazines" of a sort, They have do (disposiable)attachable belt caseing that comes preload loaded, Though they when in a fixed position and borderline cooking the cased ammo becomes a jamming and misfire issue.

I first heard about metal storm when there was a media report on private Chinese companys attempting to acquire it, it was reported that the Australian and United States govs only took notice once they feared the Chinese would get it. It shouldn't be installed on a M1 Abrams tank. That's too big. A smaller tank - remote controlled - would be ideal. It should be fitted with a box of barrels - less complicated - and the barrels can be light weight - only useful for that one mission - before recycling.
