He performed at the the Ontario Place coffeehouse in the early '60s. I sat as close to him as I could to learn his finger picking style. I still play his songs...
Let us all enjoy the music, the effect on the listener, the heartfelt honesty, and sincerity,it really has the power to move people and surely that is the purpose of music.
lol that's why all our music is crap now cause so many people over analyze it i mean there is nothing wrong with being critical of music but do you think in a world of Simon Powell this mans music would have had the success it did. that is to say as soon as someone heard his beautiful imperfection they would dismiss hit rather to just appreciate the imperfection and move on
just enjoy the music and stop analyzing. once you relax you'll be able to appreciate it more. and trust me, i hate as much as anyone out there. rip john
No need to analize this sweet man...I'm from Mississippi too just a good ways south from Avalon and would rather be up next to him than most folks I ever met. Maybe nobody ever read this and that dont matter much but wantin anyone out there who respects this man and his beauty to know that I do too and very, very much. He makes my heart sing and break with whats comin from him and on back to me and most of yall too. Thank You for appreciatin him.
I love Mississippi John Hurt...he's an original..and there's nothing like him out there.. I love listening to his simple way of playing and singing.. What a guy!
I Watched! Also I Watch Little Comments! And At The Top I LISTENED! I Like A Old Man Telling A Story From Creative Lovely Wisdom Flavor And Of Choose That Kind Of Man Can Play Everything What He Take He's Hand But The Guitar In This Time Is Like A Part Of He's Hand Even He's Soul And Probably Whole Universe Around There! Some One There Said A Rap I Nowadays Blues! In My Opinion All Music Is Only Music But A Rap Is The Rap And The Blues Is The Blues! All The Best For Everybody! Feels By Assa! UP!
@tturner112084 Honestly, they made me sick stating that! With rap its just one single after another that are pop. for a month, then they're old news!
and if me and your turner are on the same page, If my kids, or grandkids, or great grandkids were listening to anything of the sort, I'll beat the Real rythym into their souls!
@groovymr1337 well I prefer blues for just one reason, it requires musical skills. Rap whoever doesn't. lyrically it does, but so does blues and the other problem is that rap always is so egocentrical, always trying to prover your better than everyone else, there are many exceptions to this rule but I connect to blues in a way which i do not connect to rap.
tupac , Biggie , Wu-tang clan , guru , common ... those are the real hip-hop artists . But yeah , rap is somehow modern day's blues . Since they thought intelligent and useful to make it look "old" .
@GroovyGuitar02 Still , just one , very meaningful thing about blues :
Blues is a historic music , and it's a story of a whole people , took off their roots , enslaved and a million hearts beating at the rhythm at the plow . Sure , hip-hop is good stuff , but Blues ... it's blues . Musically , it can't even compare ...
@GroovyGuitar02 Rap is not modern day blues. The blues requires playing a guitar which can take years to learn. Rap is creating lyrics to recycled songs. There is no comparison.
@RetroJenny as much as i agree that rap is not the new blues although it is very fine but the way you descride rap as new lyrics to recycled songs may not be the best way to term rap. as thats what most of the blues is its tradditional music made or then owned by those that made them there own ledbetter, sam chatmon, robert johnston, john hurt all re worked tradditional tunes
@deewilki I have no respect for rap because it requires not playing an instrument and most ot the time the beat/music is taken from older songs. It all sounds the same. There is no comparison between other forms of music rather it be rock, blues, classical, jazz, etc. to rap. At least the blues musicans took the time to learn to master an instrument and create their own individual sound. Rap is not music.
@deewilki you should actually get ahold of a turntable, a sampler and some other hip hop INSTRUMENTS and try and make it. You'll find its not so simple as all that. This, not even mentioning groups like the Roots who play live instruments, with as much or more proficiency as any rock guitarist or drummer etc. If you haven't listened to enough hip hop, why would anyone consider your opinion? I don't lecture on wether a mazda miata is really a sports car, because I don't know jack about cars.
@bloodngutspatriot i dont know any black artist except hendricks that was a fckin junkie so what are u talking about? this is very positive song about women like 85% of blues music and u friend need to go outside!
@SZNRap Miles Davis, Charlie Parker?? Not sure Jimi was a junkie though, i think he just did loads of psychedelics. His death was actually tranquilizers/booze.
@fecklessmovies Jimi had wine dumped down his throat until he drowned aka "choked on his own vomit". Monika Danneman lied about the events that evening at her apartment. In the 90's charges were actually brought against her and would you believe she knocked herself off before the trial. Truth is stranger than the fiction they feed us. Google it for youself.
@bloodngutspatriot are you saying me you are listening to music of previous generation just because u dont want to be milked????? you are priceless buddy
@bloodngutspatriot and your point of telling that to us is? dont you think you can love rap, blues, rock and sailing song for example? dont be so narrow minded...
Thiis chord progression is often called "the circle of fifths"--common in ragtime and early jazz and a lot of subsequent music. Get someone to explain this to you--or look it up on Wiki, etc.
We weren't talking about music or fretboard theory or anything to do with it. We're talking about his guitar - it's not tuned to any particular pitch and it's not even tuned to itself which is VERY cool anyway. This man IS history and tells it's own story. No criticism was intended or implied so get a life numbnuts and try it straight next time. I found out all I needed to know about you just by reading your homepage.
@guitgeo In the days of Mississippi John and other guitarists they never worried too much about their guitars being tuned to pitch....unless they were accompanied by a piano they would tune their guitar to match their voice
World Class. True Original. Like all the Great Ones, he plays every note which is necessary and none which are not. Completely fluid, efficient, and melodious. (is that a word?) Anyway, thank you for sharing. A real inspiration.

@comikdebris : Everything you've ever heard recorded from Mississippi John Hurt that wasn't a 78 rpm from the late 20's (and there aren't many) was recorded between 1963 and 1966, during which time he was rediscovered after almost an entire life of sharecropping and obscurity, hotly recorded, widely celebrated, and then I understand he passed away quietly in his sleep in late '66 in his mid '70's. Not a bad redemption deal if you ask me. Most agree he had NO idea the magnitude of his impact.
My apologies if that is MJ Hurt. Any sidebar mention of Blind Blake seems to have disappeared. I was looking at so many videos that day I may have confused this one with another one.
