how do you get potassium alum? what is it?

You can find potassium alum at the drugstore, it is only in small quantity of 250 gr or 500 gr and there is impurity in it, you'll have to dissolve it all and get only the crystallized part of it, then it will be 100 % pur.

To get big quantity it's better to get it from a chemical dealer and there will be no impurity in it, you can buy the USP potassium alum or not USP potassium alum, the industrial quality is less expensive than the USP quality for personal used and both are 100 % pur

Potassium alum can be dissolved in water and there is water in the air so any alum crystal will be attack by the humidity in the air, even touching them with finger can remove some molecules of the crystal, so to not loose their luster i have to wrap them with plastic pellicule, and then i can attach them with a rope to fix them at the ceiling or put them in a transparent plastic container with food over them and get some elixir, at the beginning i use to varnish them

@Cristallerie You can also try chrome alum. It's less likely to lose it's luster than both K-alum.

what i know is that faster the evaporation, faster the growth of the crystal

i learnt that if the evaporation rate is too fast, only small crystal can be formed, from my chemistry lesson

sodium chloride is NACl, that is ordinary salt as i understand it, it will give cube ! 1- if you are not covering the solution the dry air will produce micro crystals everywhere at the top of the container 2- evaporation is no longer a good way to get crystal, it give too much faces and too slow 3- the speed is get with the vortex propeller and with injection directly or with a feeding bottle, you can also freeze slowly a solution and get big crystal rapidly without injection 4- other tips ?

Hello akileo1234, it's a must, when a crystal is growing it produce heat and then convection in the fluid, it makes the crystal not clear, the vortex allow the crystal to be symetric and you can get high speed growing it, the injection of fresh alum can be done in other way by slowly cooling the solution one degree by days or less

sure it will work ! the stirring vortex propeller process is essential, if untouched then the crystal growing will produce heat while growing and produce convection in the fluid, that convection will stripe the crystal, further the crystal growing will become non transparent cause of the speed of the growing, so to grow an untouched crystal it must be slowly and slowly you can not acheive a perfect shape, more rapid less faces like pyramid with 9 faces, slowly it can be up to 24 faces with alum

L'alun au potassium se trouve dans les pharmacies, drugstore, et vendeurs de produits chimique, celui en pharmacie est souvent melangé avec des impuretés, alors s'assurer d'avoir du 100 % pure, et ensuite il y a la qualité industrielle et la qualité usage domestique, USP, il faut la qualité industrielle pour de meilleur prix, ma dernière commande ils ont dit avoir perdu le colis et m'ont offert de recommander à nouveau mais à deux fois le prix habituel !!!

U cant use tap water to grow nice looking crystals, you have to use Distilled water and filter the total solution every 24 hours.

true indeed, tap water is ok, filter is an option cause while a crystal is growing above a vortex propeller then all the dirty is push away constantly, i put my filter with the pomp for my first mini lab video, for the feeding bottle system then no filter is needed

you can get perfect crystal without a crystal generator, for that you have to get a perfect seed, the problem is that a perfect seed is very rare, and when you grow it then it will remain visible inside the final crystal, i discover the crystal generator when i saw always a crystal growing from a fracture (micro hole) in the silicone of my old aquarium, then a remark that this crystal is still reappiring time after time, and in the same orientation !! so i reproduce this hole

no matter the thickness is, it will work, from 3 milimeters to 7 milimiter seems good, to much will be to much difficult to pierce and much difficult to insert crystal structur growing through it, and not enough will make a fragile generator cause it can be dissolve easier and empty the hole, the size of the hole is in the same matter, to big not good too small will be too difficult, then the hole is about 3 milimeters
