i own a Garand and love it... the Mauser is nice, ive shot it plenty of times...
its like comparing apples and oranges... as far as im concerned the m1 is the best semi auto out there... and the Mauser is the same for bolt actions... get or shoot both, and then you decide!
Always like the sound of the clip shooting out of an M1 - but just think how bad it was for Allied soldiers near enemy troops. Just wait for the *Pling* and then charge around while they're reloading. Or if some Axis picked up the M1 and used it against them, that pling is so characteristic to this gun you might think the user was Allied if you went by sound only.
@Shintsu2 the sound is indeed very popular. but let's not forget that the famous ping sound have killed people. the enemy learned fast that it ment they had to reload. but it is indeed a beautyfull sound, and i'll never get tired of it ^^
@Fiddepik ...right, like I said they waited for the sound before they charged around the corner at them or whatever. It's like a giant announcement "Hey, I'm reloading now!" Cool sounding, but dangerous in a wartime situation.
@Shintsu2 indeed, but the americans also learned from that, some used the trick by having a couple of empty clips in their pocket, and then thrown them which tricked the enemy aswell.
@Fiddepik Sure, all is fair game in war. No telling what tricks were used to try and one up each other on the battlefield. One of my favourites is still the entire fake division created to trick the Germans into thinking they were a real division when they were actually just a bunch of inflatable things that looked like tanks and painted pieces of wood to trick German scouts into thinking the Allies were moving a whole division in on them!
@Shintsu2 The ping being dangerous is so overated. In a real combat situation, let's say 50 americans vs. 50 germans, If you're a german and you hear a "ping" doesn't mean stick your head up. You are failing to realize that there are possibly 49 other americans not reloading, so that could be a fatal move. Even hearing the actual "ping" of the clip is damn near impossible in the heat of combat unless you are in super close quarters. Now it would be feasable if you were only fighting one american
@SchutzStaffel441 Not really. If you have a guy with a Garand in a window popping out and shooting at Germans - you hear the ping you know he's reloading and now is the chance for them to run across the street or wherever they were going and get a better vantage point. Or perhaps a chance to get closer and toss a grenade in the window. Most other guns aren't so obvious when they're reloading, I'm just saying there are times a Garand's ping would be deadly for the user.
@Shintsu2 see you're just talking about one american. Ya it's a piece of cake if you're only fighting one american. But in a situation where theres a whole company of americans, you are foolish to just listen for one ping. And to be honest, you can't hear that ping in the heat of battle with other rifles, mortars, belt-fed machine guns, etc going off. It's impossible.
@Shintsu2 Yeah there may be times when it could possibly be a problem, say about 1 in 50 chance. But then again so is a K98, just wait for the German to shoot 5 shots, then theres a good 5 second reload time to do the same thing.
M1 is a damned fine weapon. I had a WWII issued Springfield that I used to shoot clay targets set at 100yds off hand. It loved military ammo, but avoid the factory "grade A" crap... with remington ammo I couldn't even sight it in because it was all over the paper. Also avoid really hot loads because it can bend the op rod and break the recoil spring.
There is no sounds as beautiful as the Ping of the clip or the ring of the bullet impacting steel. Funny thing about the M1, I shoot worse with the national match sights. I changed em back to standard GI.
Love the ping!!

The M1 is a beast, especially if you pick up and fire an AR15 or M16 after a session with the M1.
Nice video, captures the sound well and theres nothing like the feel of a WWII battle rifle!
