Saw Herman in August 1947-the ORIGINAL four brothers. The saxes were Getz,Sims,Challof,Sam Marowitz(lead alto)and Herbie Steward on tenor who was replaced by Al Cohn four months later.Shorty Rogers and Ernie Royal were the trumpet soloists-Earl Swope on trombone-Don Lamond on drums.A great group but Getz,Sims,Rogers, and Steward looked like they just got of high school!!!
I knew JR played in Getz' group in early 50s. Hadn't known till this clip that Raney had played with Woody. Makes sense. That is one fabulous band. Trumpet section is awesome. Woody's vocal is weak though. (Compare to great clip of Louis Jordan doing Caledonia.)
Raney's role (if, indeed that is Jim we're seeing) here is to play ala Freddie Greene. I don't think he's even plugged in.
Everybody is there, Zoot, Stan, Serge and Al Cohn. The best.. white.. sax section ever and one of five.. Ellington, Clarke/Boland-70, Thad Jones Levis 1969 and Basie 61 with Foster.
Stan Levey said that when he subbed for Dave Tough on Woody's band, it was a breeze to play. I think he meant that what Dave and Don Lamond had already played built up such a percussive bank account that the band could swing without a drummer. Neal Hefti's writing probably had something to do with it too. Now, the Kenton band was an entirely different story...
Fantastic band.Superb Don Lamond on drums. When is someone going to post the film of the First Herd with Davey Tough on drums and Margie Hyams on Vibes?A chance to see Dave Tough in action.A rare treat indeed!
The saxes are Stan Getz, Al Cohn, Zoot Sims (tenor), Serge Chaloff (baritone) and Sam Marowitz (alto). John La Porta played second alto in the Second Herd. This is the Four Brothers band. Sam Marowitz's brother returned from Europe at the end of WW II with a top hat that belonged to Adolf Hitler.
You are RIGHT and I stand corrected. I see that Sam Marowitz played in both bands (Lamond too) as they are are in the Mosaic set of The complete Columbia recordings of Woody from 1945-1947. Laporta is in that set. It's the 1st Herd on discs 1-5. Woodchopper on disc 6 and the Second Herd on disc 5. Stravinsky with Herman is at the end of disc 5. I am REALLY wishing a video will surface with the 1st Herd with Dave Tough on drums.
The 1st Herd appeared in the movie "New Orleans", which also featured Louis Armstrong and Billie Holiday. It was released in 1947 but filmed before the Four Brothers Band came into existence. Clips are liable to turn up on You Tube at some point.
well, this looks like it his second herd, so Candoli probably was not there (cause a lot of great guys left with the ending of the first herd) i like the 1945 recording of northwest passage better, but still, what a priceless clip
I was trying to eyeball the trumpets . Pete played lead and that doesn't look like him in the lead chair. It might be Stan Fishelson, maybe Bernie Glow to his right
a31modela-I am sure they know each other What did your uncle do after the big bands died down? Dad went to Vegas and played on the strip as many did. One of Dads best friends, Bill Trujillo who also played sax for Woody I saw him at Dads funeral a few years ago, I had a Woody CD playing in the back ground, Bill came up to me and said hey thats me playing the sax solo on that song. Bill got up and told a few road stories, man what a time they must have had.
Figured with Getz, Rogers, Chaloff and Don Lamond that Ralph Burns would be in. I have a few Dial 78's with Herman's Woodchoppers that have the above players with Burns, so I figured Burns was in the big band as well.

You can tell the four brother sax section all had their major sound influence from Lester Young.

Most people say that the second herd was the best post-swing big band.

Can't tell just by listening, but it looks like a young Jimmy Raney on guitar (?)
RootsinBrooklyn 1 year ago
@RootsinBrooklyn probably . Jimmy Raney and Stan Getz both had origins in Herman's herd. Getz had the utmost praise for Raney too!

Yeah, I had to grit my teeth during Herman's vocal. It reminded me of a blackface minstrel show.

Attn: horn players
any insight you can lend as to why some players prefer to bend their necks to the right, as a few here do? breath control or something like that?
thanks

I use to see Stan Getz's Cadillac parked around the corner from my Hotel in Detroit! In 1968 Had the initials S G on it.
Everybody knew who it belonged to. But I never saw Him in person!

Awesome clips.
That said, these cuts just aren't the same without Dave Tough and Chubby Jackson - especially on Northwest Passage.
Ralph Burns at the piano in these clips?
SwingMan1937 4 years ago
It looks like Tony Aless. The other tenors are Al Cohn and Zoot Sims, Serge Chaloff on Baritone.

Ralph left the piano chair so he would have more time to arrange. He still played on some record dates with the guys.

Yeah, Lamond didn't sound a bit like Tough. And Getz didn't sound like Flip, for that matter!
