  • Spizzichino, 22 inch Asian Alloy Tony Williams Ride (DEMO). THIS CYMBAL EQUALS AMAZING

  • I'm probably going to get shit for this, but I feel Tony is the Jimi Hendrix of the drums. The way he plays simply always excites me.

  • This is Stan Getz Quartet Montreux 1972 - Times Lie.

  • @Dangerousaurus Elvin Jones said he practiced some ridiculous amount like the daily too...

  • Just wicked.

  • beautifull

  • i dont know how many times ive watched this video, and it still amazes me everytime.

  • Daaaammmmnnnnn, that's some very impressive drumming.

  • is that stanley clarke on bass?

  • @makethetransition00 that's the first question I had when I watched this too...

  • @makethetransition00 yes, this is a quartet with Stanley Clarke, Stan Getz, Chick Corea and Tony Williams. They released one record called captain marvel.

  • @boertush damn! what a line up! thanks for the info!

  • And he NEVER loses the melody or feel of the song all the while.

  • This solo gets me everytime. I'm sure this band was well rehearsed and all, but this has got to be one of those times where all the musicians looked at each other and were like... " damn!"

  • Live in Montreaux,1972 tour for Stan Getz's 'Captain Marvel' album w/ Stanley Clarke & Chick Corea.

  • if tony stepped in the ring with tyson, i'd put my money on TONY!!!

  • he got left....... amazing I love this he is a freak of nature..

  • Hey. Nice shoes.

  • Miles Davis' "Nefertitti" and "Sorcerer" are a couple of my favorite albums with the great Tony Williams.

  • 8 envious metal drummers watched this video.

  • 3 legends !

  • Tony Williams and shit...

  • to mike4787000: tony williams studied with alan dawson in the late 50s early 60s as a teen and was a prodigy. he went on to play with jackie mcclean and then miles davis at age 17 with herbie hancock, wayne shorter, ron carter, chick corea, etc. finally he went solo and did the whole "lifetime" jazz fusion thing and the rest is history. he's definately one of the greatest of all time. if you already knew this then forgive me just trying to add on to the knowledge. peace

  • Where did this come from? Does anyone know?

  • I just discovered Tony Williams today in an article i read on my lunch break. I got back to my desk and pulled up this video. I was bouncing around in my chair on the first listen. First listen! That's so rare to love something so much so quickly.

I know nothing about jazz or drummers, so can someone recommend some of Tony's work I can pick up to get me started.

Sorry for sounding like a rookie.

    Thanks in advance

  • @mike4787000 Try "Miles Smiles" or "Seven Steps To Heaven" -- Those are both records he did with Miles Davis. Also Herbie Hancock's album "Maiden Voyage" would be a good one to check out.

  • @mike4787000 check out Miles Davis' recordings "Miles Smiles" and "Seven Steps To Heaven" (on the latter Frank Butler kills it on a few tracks too!). Another good one to hear would be "Maiden Voyage" from Herbie Hancock.

  • you know what i love about this solo... no licks.... just phrasing

  • Meee-otherfuckaaaa! A musical giant at work...!

  • BBBBBBBBAAAAAADDDDDDDD AAAAAAAASSSSSSSSS TTTTTTTOOOOOONYYYYYYYYY

    bless you!

  • Right on! This is from Stan Getz's 'Captain Marvel' time with Stanley Clark, Chick Corea, Tony Williams, and perhaps Airto, who played percussion on the album but might be off camera if he is there.

  • Tony is the MAN!!!

  • at first i thought he had a double kick but then i realized what tony williams could do with one foot

  • This is sick. Sick, I tell you! It's great!

  • I think I have an ancient MC somewhere at the attic with that concert on it..How young they all look....stan clarke, chick corea, stan getz and tony of course

  • Tony Williams is a Fucking Badass

  • i once saw tony williams's wallet... it said "bad mother fucker" on it

  • @youenjoy00myself Now that's funny!!! And so so so true!!! Tony is the ONe And ONly!!!!!!

  • @youenjoy00myself Now that's funny!!! And so so so true!!! Tony is the ONe And ONly!!!!!! He is the Chuck Norris of drumming. In fact, the only thing Chuck Norris is afraid of is Tony Williams!!! hahhahaaaaa

  • Comment removed

  • @youenjoy00myself He was the baddest of the baddest mother fuckers!!

  • ffffffFFFFFUUUuuucccking YES!!

    YES!

    go tony go!!!

  • Gotta love Tony, and With stanely Clarke on the bass! niiiice

  • The baddest ever....long live Tony Williams!

  • ive been watching this same video for the past 9 years, and it still amazes me every time...... god bless tony williams for showing to the world that drummers do so much more than just bang on things, and that they are in fact musicians.

  • I guess, you can say that's Bang on....!

  • man this is mindblowing

thank god for the internet....would never have seen this

    ever

  • this is awesome

  • What I cannot understand , is Tonys ability to not only play his instrument, but be a leader in sound and music..he's taking charge of the rhythm and music like a rocket missle...

  • I don't think his sticks have tips on them!

  • Tony Williams doesn't make me want to practice at all, that's truly a waste of time for me. He makes me want to play.

  • this is the greatest thing ever, I can't stop listening to it!

  • just staggering! what's the name of the song?

  • I believe it's a jam based on a tune from the Stan Getz record called 'Captain Marvel"....

  • @trebnevah Captain Marvel was written by Chick for Return to Forever's first or second album before they went electric.

  • @trebnevah No, as I think again this song was on Stanley Clarke's first album "Children of Forever" 1973. Chick wrote this piece that was on the album, which featured Andy Bey on vocal's on the track.

  • Tony Willims was a major influence in my musical experiences, and also my #1 teacher and friend for a time. Imiss him as I believe the muiscal world does also, (RIP) my friend and Sag!!!

  • @elakzin

Tony is so inspirational. I never knew Tony but grew up in the Boston area studying drums...his playing means so much beyond the ear..

  • I'd take Tony over Buddy.

  • @spacitydrummer4JC Amen! somebody agrees with me finally

  • Tony was so artistically free it's unbelievable sometimes. Buddy was a comletely different style musician. Tonys milestones are Buddys "mistakes"

  • buddy is better..

    u wanna know why?..

bec. when Im listening tony I felt like I will not improve anymore..

but when I heard buddy rich drumming he makes me believe in myselef..

buddy made the drums to be feared..

  • This is seriously so uber

  • Tony is the greatest drummer who ever lived, [eriod/ Maybe Buddy or Cobmam could to faster rudilemnts, but Tony had the real soul.

  • Fucking sickening. Simply the greatest. Hands down. Rich had the speed, technique and rhythm, (also one the of all time best) but Williams was simply on a different level creatively, pure genius. Listen to Eric Dolphy's "Out to Lunch" and you'll know what I mean. The best performance by a percussionist I've ever heard. You have to give credit to Dolphy of course for the composition but no one could have filled those gaps better.

  • Si c'est un homme.

  • A great master !

  • inspirational

  • DAAAAAAAAAAAAMN! tony is the man!!!

  • This proves that metal is for faggots.

  • This is even better than his work with Public Image Limited!

  • i like philly jo jones, elvin jones but 4 me, Tony williams is most innovant ,imaginatif ,creatif drummer of all the time!!

  • @marlondavis1000 Agreed. But you have to understand Tony was in a league of his own like BUddy Rich. They were born as great drummers. HAHAHA I mean buddy was playing complex solos at age 3. I wouldn't doubt it if Tony was doing the same thing. Their minds were just different from other drummers. Philly Jo and Elvin were incredible drummers who put tons of time into practicing, unlike Tony and Buddy which the stuff came to them with very very little practice!

  • @rushour144 : I am a big Tony Willams fan, however he practised his ass off. In the John Riley book (I believe it's "The art of bop drumming") Tony is quoted to have been practising 6-8 hours each day from age 11 to age 16 or so. Fact of the matter is that he practised like every other great drummer did, Elvin and Philly Joe included. In the same section of the book Elvin is quoted to have been doing the same although later in his life.

  • @ThomasMikaelsen Yea I have read that as well. I guess I didn't really make sense. What I meant to say was in addition to being a prodigy (gifted at drums when he was born hahaha, if you know what I mean) he had nothing else to do BUT practice. Had no bands to run (like Art Blakey did) so of course he was going to improve at a faster rate.

I totally agree with you, and I apologize for my quick stupid sounding first response!

  • @Imsorry110 You gotta give credit where credits due. Portnoy is a great drummer for his genre! Not everyone can see the sheer genius in jazz drumming though! Its at the top of drumming (skill, sound, style) but Portnoy has very nice thought out programmed in his head solos, hahahahahahah!

  • Just absolutely beautiful. Fuck off metal farts.

  • DAMN !!!!

  • This is impressive

  • absolutely brilliant!!! this man could play ANYTHING he wanted. a true master.

  • back in the day when people actually learned how to play their instuments before the got on stage

  • @keenite this is a good comment. ; )

  • @keenite ... what , and people cant play today ...dont be an idiot ..the level of musicianship ( especially with drummers ) has never been higher ... EVERYONE can play the shit out of the drums today .. the competition is ridiculously fierce ... everyone can play rock , jazz , fusion , etc etc .... cats today can play anything .

  • holy sh!t

  • five stars are nowhere near enough for this!

  • Tony williams! and a young STANLEY CLARKE on upright! un believable.

  • SUM BITCH, That was damn sure hot!

  • Tony Williams is one of the few drummers who was also a composer, you can tell by his solos

  • I wouldn't say few drummers. But I know what you mean, his solo's go some where other then just a beat.

  • Sometime Ago?

  • Wish I could've seen this man in person before he passed. Amazing.

  • Oh the things i'd kill to be able to drum like this legend right here. Oh well, i guess i better do it the honest way and practice my butt off.

  • Your right we all want to just wake up one morning and play like that..ha ha

  • Damn man....some left hand Tony

  • unfreakin real

  • One word.............SHIT!

  • Comment removed

  • no,i mean Damn! Shit, Fuck! He's the man! i've listened to everything he ever did! This solo just made me say shit cause it was so beautiful! peace

  • ok, well then i must apologize b/c its impossible to tell sarcasm over the internet.... my mistake

  • u can find that piece in Stanley Clarke's LP "Children of Forever"..;it is a track composed by Chick called "Sea Journey"...

  • I thought it was from Life suite..you sure? Anyway Being a lady drummer I was moved to tears watching this clip. I miss Tony. never be another like him.

  • @VicLowenthal

I think this is a track from the record "Captain Marvel" by Stan Getz called "La Fiesta," which was written by Chic... that is Stan Getz in the vid, Chic Corea, Stanley Clarke, etc...

  • very power drumming ...love this playing -.-.-.-is one of the best drummer in the world.-.-.-rock on !!!!!

  • no te la puedo creer

  • i wish they didnt erase the full length video fo this song, its so good and tony's solo makes much more sense when you here in the context of the complete song. its a completely amazing solo nonetheless......

  • nobody played it like Chick that in the early 70's, no one.

  • PICASSO!! perfectly said drummer78

  • I love this solo! Anyone have the whole song, or performance?

  • I know. I've been a Tony Fan since 1968. He started playing Trad almost exclusively and yes he then switched to matched it seems mostly. I love his playing both ways but I find his fill and phrasing vocabulary more intersting w/trad.

  • That's good - cause Tony was the pioneer of jazz/rock fusion drumming. Check out Lifetime. Great band, great stuff.

  • There is never one thing about Tony's playing that isn't flawless. Uneneding vocabulary dependeing on mood. then hands do what brain thinks. He and Buddy are the onlt two that have the mechanics unlimited by the soul.

  • Wow, who would have thought this footage would be from a Stan Getz concert? Anthony Williams: baddest kit drummer EVER.

  • Tony Williams had 4 brains.

A sheer, beautiful beast of a human, he was.

What Jimi was to the guitar, Tony was to the drums.

    RIP.

  • It would have been cool if Jimi had formed a band with Tony Williams. It may have very well happened if Jimi had lived.

  • sheer magic

  • Right around 1:00, when he hits the high tom and you can see him smile to himself because he 'found' something...

  • That's real emotional content right there, not just chops. Good lord that man was a beast, from the Bruce Lee school of human.

  • I always loved the way he tunes his toms! they just have that hollow sound that no one else has ever been able to duplicate.

  • Well if you have been a drummer for forty years, like me...and this blew me away I have to say, it's comes from the sublime. When there's a groove going on from the likes of Stanley Clarke on bass and all the others supporting you, gives you the freedom to play around with beat. But in the end it's just genius of young Tony Williams. Passion and Practice.

  • I cant stop watching this!!!! Someone please explain Hes all over the place in this groove and its absolutely perfect....Whoever started that whole "Carter Beauford is God" thing..needs to watch this at least ten times!

  • I fucking LOVE Tony Willams. A serious Motherfucker. 10 thumbs up!

  • how much of a loser do you have to be to spread rumors about someone who died?

    grow up

  • Tony was an awesome drummer...

  • Dammit! I fucking love this man. He played so damn flawlessly I'm just always so blown away whenever i watch an old clip of tony. Talk about playing OFF the drums.....

  • Anyone know what concert this is taken from?

  • Comment removed

  • Tony didn't have AIDS. He suffered a heart attack after a kidney operation. It was a side effect from the procedure.

  • Comment removed

  • Your uncle was mistaken, sorry.

  • ok, so?

  • ..winning this argument is like being in the special olympics..win or lose, you're still retarded. They're both fucking monsters..get over it!!! : ) RIP Tony +

  • that comment was apretty BADASSSZZ

  • Chambers vs Tony? Are you kidding? Thats like Pee Wee Herman vs Mike Tyson.

  • R.I.P Tony. One of the greatest of all time and to people sayin blah blah chambers blah blah.

    They are BOTH amazing drummers

u cant say one is better than the other coz totally different people. .

profesionals have the own style and technique. and dont steal shit from each other. . but jus try to improve on it.

    R.I.P

  • Ok techno bunnie... I guess you're trying to soften me up cause you know as well as I do that Tony mops floor w/chambers as mop. I guess you think it's good enough just ti know it. You might be right. I

admit that I'm too critical. It doesn't matter that idiots think Chambers is the shit over Tony. Someday they'll have to be honest about it too. I think one of the reasons is that Tony was master of traditional grip before going to rock matched. they don't like the inferior position

  • alright tony williams is insanely good but dennis is nobody's mop.

  • Tony was more artistic in his approach to the instrument. He was Picasso-like on the drums.

  • Tony used both grips. Check out some other clips of him - he'll switch back and forth in the same tune even.

  • Tony Williams liven it up!

  • I absolutely love this guy playing! Powerful, bash, and articulate at the same time. Incredible!

  • To Shans..you know you must be in love w/Dennis Chambers. Is it puppy or full blown out of closet?Oh yes and Tony is a better drummer than Chambers by light years. Not just cause he can stick better. I still say that's because of grip. I don't care how hard Dennis closes his eyes he won't wish himself a vision of hearing musical phrases better. What does he think ,he's ray Charles? Stevie Wonder?

Billy Cobham? We just saw tony blow chambers away. What's your beef?Stupidity or love?

  • This shows you what a wanna be Tony Fraud that overated fat fuck Chambers really is. Too bad you don't have enough talent to be his sweat towel. Yah I know ...All the Modern Drummer covers endorsements blah blah blah. That's just cause Tony died too young. With him alive ther's no reason for a lousy clone like Chambers period..Do you think it's a coincidence that all the best drummers ever play traditional grip? So superior. Hard to get immediate results though. Tough it out.Worth it.

  • Prick :p

Dennis Chambers is definitely a better drummer, and person than you.

I know this because Chambers doesn't spend hours each day on the internet pretending to be offended and over dramatic after watching videos, which have absolutely no material in which can make people angry. In fact, i'm probably a better drummer than you...

    I really do pity you....

  • I can't stand elitist arguments; it's the one thing that really shits me about youtube. You're doing a great disservice to the drummers in question.

  • stop being a poo head

  • That was tasteful.

  • I wonder what's going through Tony's mind when he's playing like this. It's as if he is creating some delicious meal and he's putting a pinch of that and this in.

  • 2nd most influential jazz artist ever, right here.

    Don't y'all forget that.

  • and whose the first?

  • The one and only Miles Davis, of course.

  • does anyone know what song this is?

  • Didn't Tony came up with the "bleed pattern" by meshuggah? I remember seeing in one of his videos the "bade-ba-ba.bade-ba-ba" pattern x) everyone's complainig about them copying Illwill and stuff..... but as i said, wasnt Tony the original come-up-with-guy?

  • I Agree!!!!! You ask many modern drummers and they will all point to Williams! He was and is THE man that made modern drumming what it is today. Notice how combines Dynamics,& rudiments with sheer power and explosiveness.

  • No Billy Cobham came up with the "Bleed-Pattern"

    And btw they're called hertas.

  • Chick Corea on the Fender Rhodes!

  • hells yeah!! Chick can burn with the best of em!

  • First technical death metal drummer. Awesome!

  • You're an idiot.

Tony is rolling in his grave after seeing that comment.

  • Overplaying? Has it occured to you that perhaps, he's playing a drum solo? Probably not....

  • hes playing a solo!.....and especially with him, theres never goin to be any overplaying! hes got some fast chops and knoew how to use them

  • I'm not sure of the concert, but that's Stan Getz with the alto around his neck, and based on the samba-based solo, I'd say it was his gig.

  • Stan plays tenor!

  • I once had a brief conversation with Stan Getz, in 1978. He stood in front of me at a Boston Pat Metheny show and I asked him to move, to which he protested mildly. My Berklee College of Music buddy was in awe. "That was Stan Getz." I was like, "dude was in my way, man." Shame on me for not knowing what horn the dude plays. Also, is it sacrilege to say that this solo of Tony's is not his finest moment? Without Chick, I think the whole thing would have flown apart.

  • STANLEY CLARKE and TONY WILLIAMS ON ONE STAGE?!?!?!

  • Could anyone please tell me from which video or concert is this clip taken???Is the concert available on video???Would really appreciate it if anyone could help. Thanks!

  • orgasmic

  • One of the greatest...

  • drum MASTER!!! one of my idols
