i honestly dont believe that any of this was lipped... ive seen other places where she sang fly like a bird and hit all the notes perfectly, and that you could tell was live, although its difficult to decipher whether she is or not, i think that her voice was just that good that night...
I want to say that I love this performance, because I'm a hardcore lamb, but I just can't, truth is, I found this painful to watch - my belief is that the music actually drowned out her voice way too much, I could barely hear her amazing vocals.

When it comes to Fly Like a Bird, its harder to tell when it is lipped and not, but at 4:13 through 4:28 are more lipped belts. 4:29-4:39 is mixed live vocals and pre-recorded lipped. You can see at 4:39 she caught her moving into live vocals. The remainder is lipped with live. All belts saying "carry me home" are lipped while her harmonizing and whistle note at 4:55 are live. Final note saying "jesus" is lipped. Sounds the same as studio. But I give her MAJOR props for her singing in this video

I am one of Mariah's biggest fans, but multiple parts of this performance are lipped. About 80% is live. First lipped part FOR SURE is about 2:02, she sings "oh baby baby" but when it goes to "we..." its lipped. Listen to the quality of the music change. Another sign is her turning her head so no one can see her transition. This lipping continues until 2:28-:29 where she attempts a live belt, as you can see it doesnt sound as good because she is pushing and it transitioned back to live.

It really is from 2.02 to 2.29...listen to how the sound changes...you can tell it's lip synced and you can hear exactly when she comes back into it live at 2.29 because she pulls the mic away from her mouth due to the belt. Suspiciously, she does the same level of belting from 2.02 to 2.29 but has the mic too close. It's 100% lipped during the periods I mentioned.

Beyonce has 16 grammies???!!!! are you fucking kidding me! For dance music that you cannot more than 2 or 3 times!!! I like some of Beyonce's stuff but it so formulaic and basic. Mariah has real soul, melodies and lyrics in her music. Mariah blew me away with this performance. She's the queen!!

i honestly dont believe that any of this was lipped... ive seen other places where she sang fly like a bird and hit all the notes perfectly, and that you could tell was live, although its difficult to decipher whether she is or not, i think that her voice was just that good that night...

I want to say that I love this performance, because I'm a hardcore lamb, but I just can't, truth is, I found this painful to watch - my belief is that the music actually drowned out her voice way too much, I could barely hear her amazing vocals.
I just think the Grammy's and Mimi don't go well together for some reason.

@temple792 Grammy's rule is the whole song cant be lipped. Mariah only voiced over about 15-20% so she was in the acceptance range. She's an amazing singer, and she knows what shes doing

When it comes to Fly Like a Bird, its harder to tell when it is lipped and not, but at 4:13 through 4:28 are more lipped belts. 4:29-4:39 is mixed live vocals and pre-recorded lipped. You can see at 4:39 she caught her moving into live vocals. The remainder is lipped with live. All belts saying "carry me home" are lipped while her harmonizing and whistle note at 4:55 are live. Final note saying "jesus" is lipped. Sounds the same as studio. But I give her MAJOR props for her singing in this video

@amy121209 Excuse me? You obviously don't know anything about the grammys. She didn't lip sync the whole song, only parts that her voice could handle with extreme amounts of rest. Mariah's voice is a delicate instrument and needs time to heal. Belts at a high chest register are hard for her to hit when shes been rehearsing live for days. She takes care of her voice, so she can hit those notes when shes in the studio. I LIVE for Mariah and her music. Im not a hater and will know more about her

This was a time in her life where she was singing the same songs and trying to hit the same notes every single week. Why do you think the album EOM sounded so good?! Because she RESTED her voice. Your not a mariah fan, I accept Mariah for her talent, and if you watched as many Mariah live videos as I have, what I pointed out above would be obvious.

I am one of Mariah's biggest fans, but multiple parts of this performance are lipped. About 80% is live. First lipped part FOR SURE is about 2:02, she sings "oh baby baby" but when it goes to "we..." its lipped. Listen to the quality of the music change. Another sign is her turning her head so no one can see her transition. This lipping continues until 2:28-:29 where she attempts a live belt, as you can see it doesnt sound as good because she is pushing and it transitioned back to live.

Everyone who freaked about mariah lipping parts here can relax. She used a bacing track on the big parts to enhance her voice, its just the track sounds more apparent then then her live voice, but the audience heard it and she still sounded great. Cant lip ant the grammys people. Beyonce has used a backingtrack too, so relax.

i love both mariah and whitney. im a fan of both singers. But i think in my own opinion whitney houston performace in grammy 1987 one moment in time is the best of all time. whitney can hit those very high notes effortlessly, not getting ugly faces and very relax and yet can hit those very high notes with her very powerfull voice. unlike mariah pls watch whitney's performance and compare it to these with mariah performace at the grammys

When Mariah sings incredibly well, she is accused of lip syncing Ahaha geez she has talent people. Also, whoever says about Mariah's timing, the Beatles was all about timing too. If they came out in earlier than the 60s or after 60s, then most people may not care. People were still obsessed with Elvis and other stars before and their sound wouldn't be good in the 70s and later. Same goes with Madonna! The only artist I believe didn't really need timing is MJ.

Both were amazing and the performing styles are too different to compare! Had Madonna just sang with no choreoghraphy or Mariah danced with a bunch of dancers then maybe there'd be room for comparison but Mariah performed a ballad, Madonna performed an uptempo number.

I have to disagree w/everyone saying 2:02-2:29 is lipped. if you listen, you can hear the differences between the recorded version and this live version. its the little things in her voice that give it away(: no matter what, best Mariah performance PERIOD.

It really is from 2.02 to 2.29...listen to how the sound changes...you can tell it's lip synced and you can hear exactly when she comes back into it live at 2.29 because she pulls the mic away from her mouth due to the belt. Suspiciously, she does the same level of belting from 2.02 to 2.29 but has the mic too close. It's 100% lipped during the periods I mentioned.

dude, obviously all of you guys are mariah fans. now lets be realistic. this performance was a a complete trainwreck at the end. all of the crazy antics she did trying to get the notes out you used to deliver with ease. all of her vocal cracks. the fact you could barley hear her in the beginning. and in the end she was just screaming...and that dress...no. Yeah she hasn't got the same voice like she did during her prime years in the 90's but can't deny the fact that she can still sing her ass off, and better than alot of the so called female singers that are going around today.
