Most of Madoff's investors were sophisticated educated, English speaking & affluent. They should serve as an example, those who fail to diversify or question impossible returns. Bailing them out would tell the world America will print $, & devalue the $ when the rich make avoidable mistakes. What about the mortgage brokers who ripped off ordinary Americans submitting applications with false income info? Where's the perp walk for those people? Most blame belongs on Madoff & Fed's.

Madoff's investors could not have reasonably believed they were receiving 10 to 15% every year without some insider information. His position as Nasdaq chairman probably convinced investors , BM had access to information no one else did. Failure to follow cardinal rules of diversify & buy only what you understand.

I had serious American clients in Europe in the 90s, with really important positions, who would calculate 10% tip in a restaurant with a calculator. And that is just a very minor example.
