Perhaps too few were willing to lose their life by openly killing Hitler. The closer or more certian of death one is, the more it becomes dear. Modern rulers like Bush & Cheney make sure troops they visit (like in Iraq & Afghanistan) are disarmed -- I always thought this precaution by Bush et al. spoke volumes about how troops REALLY felt about them.
