I was lucky enough to see this show, in August of 89 at the Wyndham Theatre in London, a freind of mine got student tix for FIVE POUNDS. sadly it was a very small crowd but Afterwards both actors came out and signed our playpbills! One of my best memories !

i've never seen, heard nor read this play before. tho i did hear of it.

i absolutely love JB as SH, as well as DB & EH as Watson.

it's such a pity this wonderous play was never recorded on video.

What a marvelous sound Brett had as Holmes! In THE STOCKBROKER'S CLERK Watson describes Holmes voice as "high and rather strident." Jeremy Brett was able to use the upper register of his voice to create that quality. It probably helped that he was a singer. Before Jeremy Brett I thought that only Carleton Hobbs on BBC Radio really captured Holmes voice accurately. Listening to the tapes of this production convinces me otherwise!

Thanks a million times for posting this. I like to picture in my mind just what Brett and Hardwicke are doing, especially during the watch sequence - I can imagine Brett's single-minded concentration on studying the watch and Hardwicke's shock at the outcome. What a joy it is to hear their voices again.

It's wonderful that at least an audio track exists. I was only 14 when the play was in theatres and now regret not going.

The sun always shone when Jeremy was there.

I saw this production in London in the summer of 1989. I didn't realize at the time how lucky I was to see it. It's a pity that Brett's little gestures aren't apparent to be savored: I remember that his Holmes in this performance would offer his hand to others to shake it, and then withdraw it at the last second. Brett was a wonderful performer.
