  • wow that is way beyond my current ability but looks great!

  • @uktottys Well, you gotta start somewhere. And thanks!!

  • Thx dude... this is Gold

  • Oh, in no way am I being a dick, but I ask this b/c I am really trying to learn.

  • Now you say, "once your finger's down, keep it down" but how do you keep your fingers down without resting on a string?

  • @blazin1995 I agree, most people who nitpick usually can't play anyway, so they need to fall back on their theory. I'd rather be able to play it than say it.

  • That's not the Chromatic scale. You're leaving out 4 notes

  • @rbgrolsch You are correct!! I am deeply sorry, I'll take this down ASAP.

  • @DougFCKNSteele

    Why it's fine, just

    wrong scale

    It's still wok :B

  • @thorkamelot Ha ha, it's always the guys who have no vids who are such experts. Oh, show me the way, cyber critic.

  • @DougFCKNSteele

    sorry for my english

i tried to say that the video

    just have the name incorrect

but doesn't matter it still really helps.

    Sorry for my english again.

  • dog shit

  • @speaker360 Your playing exactly.

  • @DougFCKNSteele Speaking of shitty playing, when I ascend/descend I tend to relax my fingers when I've played a note with them and moved on to the next one. E.g.: when I play 1, I relax that finger while I'm playing 2 instead of holding it down. Is this actually a bad habit?

I'm wondering because I feel like I have more finger independence when doing it and feels like there's more tension when I just hold down the frets I have played/am going to play.

  • @ExplosiveNixon I think at the end of the day so long as the note rings out when it's supposed to, you're fine.

  • 1:10 lol

  • YOU FUCKING SUCK THIS VIDEO STI.... Oh crap the cows have come home.

Great video, very helpful for a newbie like myself!

  • I also find ascending easier, I think it's because when you play the four notes you will have an upstroke to the next string, which give somewhat of an economy of motion which you dont when you playing descending. I might just be rambling though, just a quick thought on it

  • or you can play the first one but with open and only open 123 on the G

  • @SuicideAlexis there are a billion variations on the theme, no doubt about it.

  • @DougFCKNSteele you still have the universe doug? things fuckin sick!

  • @jclp81 Yep.

  • @DougFCKNSteele That makes sense, but is cat shit better than dog shit? It all smells like shit to me. How about dog piss?

  • If you have an iPod touch or iPhone you can download a free metronome app and then plug it into the aux input on your amp so it's loud enough to hear. I've been doing that for a while now and it really helps. Before I sounded like dog shit now I sound like slightly better dog shit.

  • @redsfan293 If it's better than dog shit, does it move up the animal ladder to say, cat shit?

  • "Dog shit... fast!" *Plays Emaj7 chord*

  • i didn't watch this video for what he is showing us, i watched it for " look at them, there way the fuck out there!" LOL what a champion

  • @AlterBridgeTremonti Ha ha ha!!! Just calling it how I see it.

  • do you cuss while your teaching your kids lol

  • @Swooshie101ify Nah. Adults, but of course, but kids? Nah.

  • Hey man, I have problems using my third finger. My fingers get too far from the frets.

  • @MarcosFabianTv Move fingers closer to strings without touching strings.

  • @DougFCKNSteele Thanks for the tip, am just going to keep practicing until I get it right. Thanks again man!

  • Awesome vid! Lol dudes funny as hell too

  • Thanks bro you got me to practice with a metronome which i dont like to do most of the time, but it helped a lot listening to you rant about basics.. back to basics and what not. so yeah dude thanks for putting this online man

  • @kataishin All good, at some stage we all go back to the classics.

  • is that a j petrucci mode by ibanez? the one in a video from the song "lie"

  • @rudessdfdf No idea, not a JP fan. It's a Universe 7 string and part of the Jem family, I think. 90's model 7 string.

  • @DougFCKNSteele thanks ure very kind

  • just to complement. you can use permutations for this exercise, shift from 1-2-3-4 to 2-3-1-4 or anything you want.

  • @AlMachineKTC Yep, there's all kinds of gay shit you can do with this bad boy.

  • Hola.....

  • @PhilFeedback Hola.

  • That's the best way to say it "... way the fuck out there. You don't want that."

  • @5688dude Economy o' motion.

  • I wanna know what dog shit sounds like. haha great vid. The simplest exercises are the most important.

  • Comment removed

  • dude is that an Ibanez?? I have the same one but white??

  • @christblood2 Yep, 7 string.

  • "look at where my fingers, they are way the fuck out there" LMFAO great video tho

  • @RobnKirch Killa!!

  • That sounds awesome!

id like to apply a rhythmic pattern to this!

  • Great lesson, & a fun attitude. Thanks! You've got a new subscriber.

  • @liltari Cool, be sure and check out the VH lessons.

  • Awesome lesson!

  • great lesson, thanks

  • @ge0metr1x All good.

  • funny that

  • metalheads swear too much

  • @94029374938402048 Get fucked cunt.

  • Excellent teacher, why can't they all be straight to the fuckn point like you? Well Done!

  • @Gaylord1969 I guess some teachers like the sound of their own voice.

  • this is the best fuckn guitar lesson for beginners ive ever seen. thx dude

  • @rrrtbds12223 Schweet!!

  • dog shit

  • @speaker3600 You eat what?

  • You seem to hold the pick just like Paul Gilbert. Seems to be a very effecient way to go!

  • Yep, if you like the way someone's doing something, grab it!!

  • Great lesson man. Thanks

  • i love this guy....hes so funny ''there way the fuck out there'' lmfao

  • Yeah!! I is funny!!

  • shh keep quiet utube will take the vid down

  • @boundaries1unknown3 You obviously have seen none of my other clips.

  • I would learn guitar just to do that..cool

  • I wish others would,.

  • hey, i just started playing guitar like a month ago and i was wondering if this scale is worth perfecting...

it is really difficult for me to reach the 4th fret without having my fingers "way the fuck out there" and it takes me about a minute or two to reach the end of the ascending and about 5 minutes for the descending...

also, is it normal to have problems reaching the 4th fret? my pinkie is all bent and laying on the other strings because i cant reach it

    thanks

  • if you're new to guitar, everything you do is gonna feel awkward.

If you're one of these guys who thinks they'll be doing sweeps in 3 months, you're high as all fuck. What separates the men from the boys is practice, pure and simple. And jam with as many people as you can, even the shitty guys can give you a perspective on something. it's all give and take. good luck. Nothing comes easy.

  • Yes, it is common for the pinky not to cooperate when you are just starting off. You have to just keep working at it.

  • Yeah I can get it pretty quick now, sometimes I can go up and down the scale without messing it up or pausing once.

    Thanks anyway!

  • i have the same problem with students! it just doesn't seem to sink in to them that it's easier and smarter to leave the fingers down! i guess it just comes with time and practice (the realization, i mean...). although, i don't remember myself having that problem when i first started learning the guitar...

  • anything new is gonna be fairly awkward. just tell them they'll sound like Herman Li if they don't do this shit right.

  • hahahahahahaha!

"so tell all your friends herman li is cool or i shit on your head!"

  • I'll wear a helmet that day.

  • haha! you know that's from a herman li parody here on youtube, right? look it up, it's pretty funny!

  • XD at the herman li comment dude your fucking awsome

  • I hate the ole' Dragonforce.

  • =3 same studioForce ish for teh failz

  • " there all the fuck out here " ha lol you sir r funny

  • cunts need to be told.

  • Should I pick soft or kinda hard while playing the chromatic fast?

  • do rounds of both.

  • ha true very much so ha.

  • thank u, good tips

  • hey i need to learn this scale for my music assignment this helped alot thankyou theres alot of douchey vidz about it but this is actually good but you know wen u assend is it a rule that u move up a fret?

  • no rules, just helps you move up the neck.

  • kk thanks so in my gcse i shud accend the same as decend?

  • sure, why not?

  • thanks man

  • Is the riff in the Song "Chromatic Fades" a chromatic scale? Look it up on here, I just want to know - pardon my ignorance, I'm a drummer.

  • I have harder time ascending on the 1st and second string than i do on the others, and i can descend much easier......i dont know why

  • work on it daily 'til it's fixed.

  • all this talking..just put down the tab to the scale..xD

  • Nah man, look, for the most part, tab is for dip shits who can't figure shit out by ear.

  • ......itll take me a few minutes for me to tab by ear.then by sight printed down...xD...

so by that statement......you never read a theory book ,and know what to play by ear???

  • do more vids like this, this is very helpful

  • LOL @ there Waay THE FUCK OUT THERE!!!

  • It's silly but that's what happens in the first stages..

  • Lol, love the green in the guitar, this should help a lot of people out though

  • Nice. Thanks man!

  • Hope it helps!!

  • hahaha im complete opposite with ascending descending stuff.

  • good advice

i love the part when you say "look at where my fingers are, they're way the fuck out there"

  • dude ive been playing for 4 years and i still dunno how scales work, i never got a lesson i just taught myself, i can cover songs but i cant come up with my own shit, please message me if u think you can help, cheers !

  • way the fuck out there bahahahahahahaha

  • That's interesting that ascending is easier than descending for you.

I'm completely self taught (I just play songs I love and learn them through tabs) and I have no understanding of musical theory at all.

Descending arpeggios are much easier for me and if I want to go on a fast roll I'll always pull off instead of hammering on.

Oh yeah and your guitar smells like cabbage (for the haters).

  • yep.

  • they pull this business "1,2,3,4 *pause

    1,2,3,4... hahaha

  • Hey Doug, I was looking at you playing the exercise descending and wondered if the reason you found it more difficult was not in fact the fingering but the picking, as when descending from the high E down to the low E, you use outside picking when changing strings, due to the mathematics of the pattern. When ascending however, it uses inside picking.

  • Nah, it's all outside picking. I hate inside picking, but will not go to the point of starting on an upstroke to play something though.

  • Hmm.. I looked at the video again and I'm pretty sure that when ascending the pattern you use inside picking when switching strings, as its a 4 note per string pattern and you're starting on the downstroke, so on each string you have:

    down up down up.

Meaning the last note on each string is an "up" pick. The first note on the next string is obviously a "down".

The implications are that when ascending the pattern it turns out to be inside picking, and vice versa.

  • If you play it, focusing on the last note on one string, and the first note on the next you'll see it.

Its weird though that you find descending harder because your outside picking is pretty solid from the other videos where you play the paul gilbert style sextuplet licks, so actually I would probably then say it was the fingering, but then you have pretty solid fingering too....

Anyway I hope I did'nt come across as disrespectuful in anyway as I admire your playing and voted for you : )

  • Nah man, we're good. It's all about sharing.

When I ascend, and the last note hit is an up on the low E and the next note is a down on the A, I guess I just don't feel as boxed in if it were the other way around: descending, down on A and up on the low E. That's the real bitch in the scheme o' things.

At the end of the day, my picking's good for some things, shit for others.

  • Good stuff. Valuable info for a solid foundation. Thanks.

  • Daily for 10 minutes with a metronome until you die.

  • ....

    =D

    subscribed.

  • ha i find the descending bit easier than ascending but oh well, also cheers for this because shit like this really helps me get faster at solos n what not, good work man

  • with my playing, descending is always harder. So work on it more, ya know?

  • Your rocks! Keep it up

  • nice vid man haha

  • LOOL. Look at where my fingers are, their way the fuck out there, you don't want that. haha. nice vid man

  • ta. Sometimes the F bomb helps.

  • lmfao i totally agree xD

  • You the shit...thx!

  • All good. Just trying to help.

  • Good Video !!

  • Wow as a beginner of a few weeks I greatly appreciate the advice of keeping the fingers on the fret after you plucked the string. My chromatic scale sounds better already and my fingers feel much more comfortable then having them float 3 inches above the board.

  • this guy is nice

  • I'm still nowhere close to where you are, but I'm getting there!

  • Metronome it every day, 20-30 minutes a day, you'll see improvements in a week. So long as your technique is correct.

  • "Or else it will sound like dog shit fast."

good stuff dude lol and thanks for the tips

  • how come nobody knows how to spell "exercise"?

  • i always thought there was two c's in that bad bitch, I'll fix the shit, as I hate bad spellers.

  • haha still nice vid :)

  • hahahahahahh way the fuck out there

  • is that a 7 string guitar

  • no its not

  • Very good excercise and advice for the beginners. Once you get the fingering for this and timing down your pretty much on your way to playing just about anything....

    Expericenced,

    SkreeminR, Tampa, FL

  • "look at where my fingers are...they're way the fuck out there"

    lmfao.

  • Honesty is the best policy.

  • 1:39 - 1:44 sounds really funny!

  • Nice lesson. Good technique- not dogshit.

  • This guy is hilarious

  • helpful 8]

and yeah descending is harder for me too, just needs practice i guess

  • when i do this i acualy have more trouble when i decend and when the frets are closer is that normal and how can i fix it?

  • Normal, push through doing it twice as long with a metronome.

It's this shit that separates the men from the boys.

  • Fuck. i do some shit similar to this but i dont use my ring finger so this is fucking frustrating

  • if you're gonna use 3 sfingers, take out the middle finger.

  • k thanks man

  • Dirty language.

  • Fuck yeah dude, nothing better.

  • How do you clean your nose?

  • Right hand pinky finger. And if I'm driving, I eat the evidence.

  • OOooooh Great!! My kids gonna do this tonight!! YOU are a waaaay better teacher than I am....I am just "mom" lol Thanks!!

  • well, starting up a shred guitar website very soon, so be ready..

  • gd job thenk you so much ;)

  • I sat there trying to find your videos forever until the point of that i had to google scales to remmeber what scale i looked up in the first place.

    holy shit that was hard.

remmembering to favorite you from now on hahaha.

  • cool tips, hey you maybe woul like to try this, play chromatics playing:

    1st finger-1st fret,6th string

    3rd finger-3rd fret,5th string

    2nd finger-2nd fret,6th string

    4th finger-4th fret,5th string...

and so on... is it understandable? sorry if not...

    anyway, great playing ;)

  • I'll try that shit. Thanks for the tip.

  • thank you for yours :D

    shred on!

  • Called Permutation

  • cool, i'll look for the word forward to find more examples ;)

  • I believe you make learning guitar fun.

  • *Phew!!!*
