This is what I don't get about terry and his 'contraption'. Drums are the heart beat of music, they keep the time, and supply the groove, they are not built to create melodies, they are the driving force behind a band. If you want to create melodies you use, guitars, piano etc not a fucking pitched drum kit tuned to every note in the chromatic scale. All you essentially need is kick, snare and hat and a ride. Toms are just optional extra's in some styles, some styles they are vital.

If he wanted to play actual notes, maybe he should have thought about Timpani instead of drumset, I'm sure he could have easily bought a set, considering they would have been much cheaper than this beast, but then again, Timpani would be tuned much lower than what he currently plays on now...

he uses all of it... like he said: he's making music with the drums so he needs a kit that plays in different keys which requires a bunch of bass drums and chromatic toms and other tonalities in tune with what he wants to play.. its true to say that most really good drummers are the better musicians of the band they play in and at some point their ears could just be like i cant take any sort of dissonance with the other instruments.
You can't deny Bozzio is at a BARE minimum in the top 40 drummers of all time (I would, however, put him in my top 25 probably). But at the same time, the size of the kit is absolutely unnecessary.
@KeithHarbaugh Ehh, he wouldn't make my top ten, there's a lot of better drummers out there, for example, Krupa, Rich, Bonham, Peart, and Moon, just to name a few that make up my top ten.
Now set up JoJo Mayer, Dave Weckl or Dennis Chambers (just to name a few) next to him with a five or six piece kit and watch Terry get his ass handed to him.
Whoever talks shit on Bozzio, his set or his ego deserves to be put int othe drumming pit of death.
Why? The man's a genius, he has every right to have the kind of setup that he wants. And in fact, he also uses it to its max potential. The drum kit is set up so it can satisfy his musical needs, that's all.
Check out some of the melodies he plays, like Samba Ousado. Now you go do that on your 4-piece, lol :|

Tune all of your rack toms to the same note, and then ask what idiot would want to play melodies on drums.

@SuperChuck3 : Obviously this isn't a standard drum kit...each tom is actually pitched to a note, so he can create his own music as opposed to just beats and percussive noise.
Also, there's no rule that says kits have to small and portable. Look at any major metal band's drum kit, I doubt it's very portable.

My limited drum brain wouldn't know what to do with a quarter of this set up. He'd have to be going for a higher plane of drumming, otherwise it's just overkill.

I agree with Terry...I see drummers with a 4 piece kit and play the same 4 sounds all night...boring. And no it does not make you cool to play a set up like anyone else. Come guys...be your own person, your own player. Stop tring to be LIKE someone else. Be YOURSELF!!! And yes, a little overkill, but different and that makes it cool!

@wakayoda Usually people that are on the level of getting 400 plus strangers to show up to any location in the world just to watch him solo on a drum set, has already done the "jazz kit, 2 snares, no tom" thing, and most likely has enough talent to shred on any set, or even a couple of buckets and a trash can lid. If the talent is there then you can play on anything, but its haters like you that always have some smart ass coment to say about something that you probably couldnt do yourself.

You could probably suspend a bunch of different sized flutes and make a percussion instrument out of them if you wanted. People have made cool instruments using stranger things. All instruments are rhythmic instruments, rhythm is a fundamental part of music no matter what you play. The question; are drums melodic instruments per se? The answer is; yes, they are.
Tune all of your rack toms to the same note, and then ask what idiot would want to play melodies on drums.

@SuperChuck3 : Obviously this isn't a standard drum kit...each tom is actually pitched to a note, so he can create his own music as opposed to just beats and percussive noise.
Also, there's no rule that says kits have to small and portable. Look at any major metal band's drum kit, I doubt it's very portable.
