  • "Will he heed the last warning, or perish with the doomed structure?"

  • Aeroelastic flutter is the new theory :p # minutephysics

  • THis is just black, theres no video you DOLT

  • Death eaters + resonant frequency = ...

  • This used to have video, it seems to have disappeared.

  • @HelmutVillam

Glad it's not just me, though my laptop was being "funny" again....

  • Prerunner it's in tecoma narrows near Seattle

  • ummmm wheres the video, only audio...?

  • Modern news should definitely be delivered with this dramatic music and theatrical reporting style.

  • Now imagine today's news with dramatic music like this! It would bring much more atmosphere to reports of politician debates and such.

  • still mad at the asshole for leaving the dog... his life was obviously not worth it.... poor puppy... it was scared, so lets leave it to die. dickwad

  • He didn't leave the dog, he went to go save it and the dog was too frightened and attacked the man...

  • 361 "likes" on a video with no picture?? Footage missing from a video described as "newsreel footage."

  • they showed some of this stuff on tv and the lone car, they guy got out of the car and left his dog on purpose just to get out of there, what a dick

  • This video has ben broadcasterd so many times now, It should be Ok, to remove this from Youtube.com in my opinion.

  • Black Video?!

  • wheres the video? its just sound

  • To all the douchebags that keep bashing this video for no image, fix your fucking computer, I can perfectly see this on my iPod and on my computer.

  • Comment removed

  • Why isn't there any picture?

  • <<<===== dont click

  • I wish I could see what he's talking about.

  • CAN’T SEE ANYTHING! UGH! :P

  • No Tube!

  • You can hear the news, but for some reason, can't see what's happening.

  • Fuck you, remove the video you idiot. There is no image!

  • 40 mph winds destroy a famous bridge. Way to go, America!

    :P

  • It's weird that the cement looked like rubber when the bridge was swaying.

  • se nota que es un video nocturno

  • WHERE IS THE IMAGE?

  • Ayee that's my city.

  • OMG O_o

  • Ohmyfockinggooosch

  • Muy ilustrativo del fenómeno de resonancia. Me llama mucho la atención que alguien lo haya podid filmar.

  • i almost cryed when my teacher showed me this not even joking cuz theres that puuppy and imagine him just yelping in there and his owner leaves him :'(

  • lol - that is not a river under the narrows!

  • Was this a real newsreel?

  • Worthless camera angle during the actual start of the collapse.

  • it would suck ass to be on that bride

" hey john. No. no. HAHA. No way. I - HOLY FUCK FACE-

    AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

    - dan? dan? hello?

  • Oh bugger

  • hell no music sucks!!!

  • great music !

  • This is why suspension bridges have trusses.

  • haha..people who say this is fake are just trying to get people all dumb and pissed..the footage obviously looks real..and I know for a FACT it is. I am from Tacoma and you can actually go on dives and look at the old bridge and car underneath the two new bridges that are built. i have done so myself. and the original footage was black and white, however, with modern tech we are able to create some color...the area is also the host to one of the largest octopus' in recorded history.

  • @skateronabaker The car's still under there? That's so cool! Can't help but wonder if Tubby the dog's still in there, tho...

  • @skateronabaker

original footage was filmed in kodachrome colour. the footage in this newsreel was converted to black and white because it was easier to show in public cinemas this way.

  • FAIL

  • it was the wind. i learnt all about it in scince class today. we saw this vid, its scary shit

  • @Dianaxoxsmiles Hope you learned how to spell science in that class.

  • @robhex dont worry i did :)

  • @1:03 it sounds like it says sexy.

  • i wonder what happened to the mans dog ..

  • @Asiankidz1 no joke wikipedia says that the dog died they tried to save it but apparently it was paralyzed...thats wikipedia for ya. they also said that the owner got like $350 for the car and dogg so sadd

  • good ol' oldschool dramatic music and commentry

  • good old resesonance

  • Natural harmonids in action.

  • no wonder they sold london bridge its got a troll under it

  • shaaaarks really brought it down.

  • atleast the only fatality was the mans dog.

  • omg! My car!

  • every phisic structure has a frequency if the wind that hits the brige has the same frequency occur a ressonance and the bridge collapse...sorry im 14 years old and iim brazilian ...im not sure about that but yesterday i learned about tacoma bridge =D please dont hate ...sorry abou the bad english too

  • You're spot on mate, A+!

  • @henrilot U r wrong, the reason of the collapse is not resonance. Actually it was an aerodynamically poor design (aeroelastic flutter).

  • @GSNspain Surprise! Aeroelastic flutter is a form of resonance. So yes, it was actually caused by the natural resonance of the bridge.

  • Comment removed

  • @henrilot me to

  • @henrilot

actually the collapse was due to vibrations caused by aeroelastic flutter, not resonance

  • I guess Superman got there too late ... !

  • @hallj100 hahahahahaha

  • if u look at it in color u would notice a dog called tubby in the car. he was the only casualty and he became famous for it.

  • aw :(

  • the guy didnt take his dog with him when he left the car???!!!...that's so mean and Im not really a big fan of dogs...aww

  • It's amazing! How does this happen?

  • This looks like the same footage from another video of the Tacoma Narrows collapse... but why is there a colour version with much better definition? Was the original footage modified or something? I'm pretty sure the other one is not a "reconstitution".

  • It was originally filmed in color on 16mm Kodachrome film, by a man who owned a nearby camera shop and had been documenting the building of the bridge. Many 35mm Newsreel copies of parts of the footage were made, which were in black and white, so that's why black and white copies are more common.

  • From the driver's account (wikipedia):

Before I realized it, the tilt became so violent that I lost control of the car...I jammed on the brakes and got out, only to be thrown onto my face against the curb...Around me I could hear concrete cracking...The car itself began to slide from side to side of the roadway.

On hands and knees most of the time, I crawled 500 yards [450 m] or more to the towers.....

  • That car driver didn't look to be running for his life, looked more like a leisurely stroll

  • I believe the man shown in the video is not actually the driver, but an engineering professor studying the bridge, who tried to rescue the man's dog from the car, but failed because the dog was afraid to come out and bit him.

  • so the dog died...?:(

  • He wasn't running in order to keep his balance, fool.

  • Why did they not talk about the only death... THE DOG

  • Comment removed

  • hmm somehow the cameras back them filmed everything backwards cause the car was on the other side.

  • Harmonic vibration cuased the bridge to resonate. every substance, structure, etc. has a frequency that it will vibrate at. The bridge is vibrating in a sine wave at a certain frequency.

  • sorry if it didn't get across, but I was trying to be sarcastic.

  • Try to make it more obvious...

  • it was REALLY obvious.

  • ehhh... maybe some of it was true, but the humans was a less smarter on that time...

  • In fact, they still is.

  • who knew solid concrete could be flexible like that? thats just freaky.

  • It's actually the reason we use concrete is so many structures. If it weren't flexible, the powers that broke that bridge could very well have broken it in half long before it started waving about like that.

  • anyone who paid attention at school?

  • Comment removed

  • I know this is real.. i was referring to the people who are trying to convince people that this is real just because it said so on wikipedia, and not because of the actual science behind it..

  • anyone who is saying this is fake is a moron.. know your facts before posting stupid comments.. too bad youtube is for idiots as well..

  • we too watched this in phsyics class

  • Did the subject talk about Vortex Induced Vibrations when you guys discussed the bridge collapse? Please reply.

  • we watched this video in my physics class and we learned about resonance. my teacher said that he doesn't think anyone died and that the dog was fine. it's still scary to think about though

  • .. the dog did diee !!

    =[

  • wow that is so sad, but that would of been soo scary.

  • This is a hilarious example of old news. And we think the news is dramatic today?!

  • I feel horrible about the dog!!! :(

  • I live in gig harbor right across the bridge (now bridges) from Tacoma so I cross the bridge everyday to go to work. My Grandfather watched the bridge fall right in front of him. Its kinda sad seeing this masterpiece of engineering break apart in the blink of an eye. My grandfather said they had to take ferry's to cross that little area. On the bridge built in the 50's they had one of the (I want to say tower but its connecting the road to the bridge) pieces from the previous bridge onthenewone

  • Masterpiece of engineering? If it was a masterpiece of engineering it wouldn't have collapsed.

  • It's not the bridge's fault. It was the weather conditions.

  • Ofcourse it was the bridge's fault. These weather conditions were to be expected, it wasn't exactly gale force winds. Read the wiki page for this bridge. That tells you that the bridge was designed in a way which meant wind which flowed underneath the bridge got trapped by the steel trusses which were supporting the bridge, because they never had holes for the wind to pass through. This caused the bridge to sway, and each time the wind got caught it would sway more, eventually causing collapse.

  • Gah. I am a moron. Thanks for response.

  • EPIC FAIL

  • They used to show us this on 16 mm film at Tech. College to demonstrate resonance.

Great to see it again fifty years later.

  • holy shiz...

  • does anyone else know if the "brown noise" is real??? i heard rumors it was being tested in japan??? ( resonance occurs at the same frequency as the bowl and one is supposed to desecrate ones self, myth???/)

  • this is a big WTF

  • i live in gig harbor where this happened and my neighborhood is right next to the bridge. we have two strong bridges now. i lovee it here and im glad this area is famous for something.

  • To know a little more about what happened to the dog, you can go to wiki and search for "galloping gertie"

The man who had the dog fled the car but the dog was too afraid to go with him, rescuers came to the dog to attempt a rescue but doggie was too scared, so he bit them.

You also have to understand that these people were indeed risking their lives with no way to convince the dog to come with them.

At the last seconds they had to save themselves. Very unfortunate and sad indeed :(

  • Tacoma rocks!

  • lmao watched this in my physics lesson today, made us all laugh we didn't think it was real lol

  • lol man me too watched this thing today lmao i though it was a joke XD

  • The bridge has a natural frequency, and the wind (it is a driving force) forces the bridge to osicllate at its natural frequency. This is called resonance. The amplitude increases and the system (the bridge) reaches its maximum energy.

  • Actually technically it is due to what's called aeroelastic flutter. It's not just that the bridge was oscillating at is resonance frequency, but the fact that the wind was driving it with a sort of positive feedback that amplified the oscillations. 'Nuff said.

  • haha, i only do IB physics, so ur probably right @ joey

  • this is real morons -.-

well, you might now a thing or two about it if you're smart enough to study physics.

  • Lol njwjnzl thinks he's awesome because he's taken intro to physics . Don't act like you're smart because you've taken Physics 101. I guarantee I know more about physics than you. That doesn't mean I'm going to call you a moron.

  • why leave the dog behind?

  • lol its not fake, i cross that bridge...or the new Tacoma narrows, 4 times a day and today there is about 60 MPH winds.....and at least 20 MPH winds going through at all times.....trust me, this is VERY real....

  • This IS real! We were learning about it today in my AP Physics class and that the bridge was sturdy but the wind was going at a certain frequency to suddenly make the bridge swing and collapse. But to the skeptical: research this event or go read a book as Wingsoflead89 said, because it really did happen!

  • Grenade in mouth? PULL THE PIN. Go for it. Eat it and smile.

  • Nazi? Die.

  • the first Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapsed on November 7, 1940.The remains, located on the bottom of the Sound. The collapse brought engineers world-wide to reconsider aerodynamic design in suspension bridges

Fake? read a book or something morons, or better yet just read up on some history, and if reading is too hard for you watch the history channel...not everything that confuses your small inbred minds is "fake" its just beyond your comprehension because you have the IQ of a door nob...

  • It's not fake, the design of the bridge's sides are solid. Bridges today have triangle holes cut out of them to prevent something like this from happening.

Imma 15 year old kid and I know this, come on people.

  • actually they're the shape of triangles because of the triangle's stability, strength, and sturdiness!

  • this isnt fake i live in tacoma washington

  • Sorry, your what?

Its fake, haha you kids love hollywood...

  • I'm sorry man, but it's real! (Wikipedia: Tacoma Narrows Bridge)

  • the first Tacoma Narrows Bridge collapsed on November 7, 1940.The remains, located on the bottom of the Sound. The collapse brought engineers world-wide to reconsider aerodynamic design in suspension bridges

  • its real. my teahcer told us about it

  • I knew about this, but seeing it from diffferent angles is really sad!

  • the only fatality was tubby the dog. The owner got to safety in time

  • I feel bad for the owner of that car who was still on the bridge when it collapsed

  • thats intense what happend

  • apisteuto ki omws alh8ino...

  • we watched this vid in school! i just had to find it on youtube. i mean really. y not?

  • there it goes!!! can yhuu imagine natasha klapinsky saying that today??? poor tubby:(

  • What amazes me is how in the world it stayed together as long as it did? Except for the resonance error the construction must have been really good.

  • The dog was named Tubby :D

  • "High above the river"? Excuse me?

  • News anchors were much more exciting back then. "There it goes!!!"

  • I blame G. W. Bush. Total inside job.

  • Obviously, it was the unborn soul of Dubya posessing the span.

  • Looks a bit like our economy today, eh?

  • i agree.

  • haha. yep it does. does anyone know who could have built our economy on such an unstable frame???

  • forced to watch this by my teacher, oh well it was cool.

  • Surprisingly, nobody was hurt. Only the cars. This is absoulutly amazing!

  • Dog was in the 1 car. Died from the plunge.

  • Dude, the latest shit is to build a system like this and attach magnets to it that vibrate inside of a coil to generate electricity.

  • no but they send ANTbulances to help them

  • la wea brigida :P

  • the music and narration is brilliant!!

  • its a concept of resonanace.

  • hahahaha what in the fuck

  • love this old style reporting

  • "Ha ha!"

    -Nelson Muntz

  • those people seem so uneffected! that one guy just walking away like he's on a sunday walk in the palk, not even really looking back. wtf?

  • there was a dog in the car who was scared and didnt want to go out . poor doggy died with the colapse

  • its me Jamie :D

  • my physics teacher is making the class watch this :D

  • My physics teacher made my class watch this too :D
