This scene was completed in 12 hours of shooting. I was to be Red Wood played by Thom McCleister but, fate had other ideas. My parents owned the bar and I lived in a room in the back of the bar.
He, 'Wild' Bill had stopped by the bar for a beer just as the film crew was setting up their equipment for the day's shoot. He had driven into town to pick up a tank of water for his home and stopped in for a beer. Bill explained to me that they (casting) had not
called him to work in the film as he sipped his morning can of beer about the time one of the Assistant Directors noticed him and said "You're perfect, don't move, stay right there".

@JustAintthatWay This is definitely Grodin's scene. He's brilliant at being serious!

if grodin and deniro did in fact imorovise this dialogue
they're crowned kings of both wit and performance
deniro's "con-fig-ur-ra-ra-tion" is quite possible the funniest thing i've ever heard
& grodin ... it's grodin's scene lock stock & barrel
this flick is simply marvelous
mar-ve-ve-lous

oops ... make that 'improvise' not 'imorovise' im-mo-mo-rovise?
and how 'bout the old codger sitting to grodin's left? his sip from the stein early on then later grodin and him staring each other down?
i mean this scene - this whole flick - is is like a comedic gold mine ... nuggets/gems everywhere
