Defenders mostly 9,000 irregular peasant infantry and artillery. A 2nd charge was required and by the 1st & 2nd Squadrons of the Polish Light Horse along with the Chasseurs-a-Cheval of the Guard. This time the guns were taken. Accounts in Chlapowski Dezydery's 'Memoirs of a Polish Lancer'.

Not entirely accurate; It took several attempts with the aid of the French infantry flanking the sides of the hills of the pass. The 1st charge was approx 80 Polish cav. of Gen Montbrun's duty escort, & were almost wiped out to a man, several survived but the pass was still intact. -Rik-

The Polish light horse didn't carry lances there. They were introduced much later.

Regiment were armed in lances after Wagram 1809.

As a rule, artillery is pretty chanceless against cavalry.

yep just like in the Classical Age (Rome) it was very bad for artillery (ballistas) and archers to encounter cavalry...

how come you made your cavalry walk for a while to let a few be killed by artillery? if you charge all the way from the time they are able to fire, not only will you give them less time to fire on you and take less men, but you would save even more because it is harder for them to aim that way.

I did it because of two reasons; one: they would be spent, charging from such a distanse, and two: This is how they normally did in those days, so it's for accuracy (and they only did take a few losses really, they overshot several times).

it takes a long time for heavy cavalry to run out of energy. they could probably charge from one end to the map and back before they drain their energy.
