  • I'm Welsh,this music matters.

  • ps, it's still a great song and a fantastic group!

  • hi nula, it's a free world but ask yourself one question before you assume my soul - how much unfettered joy has politics brought to the paradise we call Earth? If you can say that wars, tax and regime control have brought happiness to this world then you're a better person than most I ever did meet. I was suggesting musicians like the players here bring more joy to us than a whole parliament of tax barons. It's a free world, you're free to think how you choose and I hope you find joy.

  • sure politics and religion has been the ruination of the joy in a man's soul. Here's a cheers to the spirit and the joy in the soul and the music the pair make.

Fantastic recording. I recall watching Phil playing the piano on the Late Late Show many moons before you young readers played X box. His face at the end said it all. Truely magical! :)

  • @nv7103 "sure politics and religion has been the ruination of the joy in a man's soul". Surely not, get over yourself, grow up. You have no joy in your soul, in 2011, that would be on you. History will never change, don't make it about you.

  • What a beautiful Irish wish.....Likewise my friends....The Fureys bring a beautiful bit of Ireland to share with the world with their truly beautiful music...smiles...

  • from an IRISH female de FUREES r up der wit de WOLFE TONES 2 of d best irish bands english r irish or any other kind of speciman!!!!

  • This song ranks with Sweet Sixteen and Green Fields of France, as one of their greatest songs. Have you listened to The Lonesome Boatman? Haunting..... The Fureys were a very talented family. Praise indeed from an Englishman !

  • I just love all of the songs and the instrumentals that the Fury have done. My special favourites are the "war" songs such as Gallipoli and The Green Fields of France - they so touch the emotions - lovely. Must be the Celtic blood in me - I am a Scot.

  • @andywaugh257 The 2 you cite were both written by a Scot. Eric Bogle from Peebles.

  • You are right, I agree on this one.

  • I think they're both great, just because it's different doesn't mean its bad.

I'm partial to the Celtic Thunder version, but I'm pretty sure that's only because that's the one I'm used to.

Phil Coulter's an amazing musician/composer, he trusted both groups with his song, that says something too.

  • what can I say...?

  • Generations have gone, I know, but alot of Aussies are decendants of Irish famine emmigrants. Somewhere in the psyche there is a touch of sadness in parting the mother country.

  • Long Live Davie Arthur and The Fureys, i can't get enough of their music, just wonderful, pure magic at it's best!!!

  • brilliant song

  • Sad song Thinking of stealing away myself wasting my time staying where it feels i'm not wanted daughter just reached 15 seems as though i've just vanished from her life, sad but time to move on i think.

  • Never give up,thats how you prove the strength of your character.see just what your made up of.....will it be a stealaway? or a stand up person who sticks through the rough painful times.oops, non of my business, just felt your pain as I read that and needed to say something..I'm sorry

  • bs are from n ireland? and thanks for the meaning.

  • hey bs what is this song about??

  • Being a little informal aren't you? You'll be calling me 5750 next!!!

Well I'm reading directly from the explanation, it's about 2 youngsters escaping from the troubles in Belfast.

On a more personal note my Uncle left Ireland after being Kneecapped for marrying a Protestant girl.

People will use religion to justify any despicable action, I bet even the Klu Klux Klan find justfication-just a complete set of Bastards.

  • Well said!!!

  • I've allways loved this song, but did not understand the context until now.

I've spent time in N.Ireland, delightful people. The troubles, such a shame, God Bless the peacemakers.

  • ..This is such a heartbreaking song..I nearly always cry when i hear someone singing it and it just`s breaks my heart...(^_^)

  • sad sad sad........... I had to steal away once and leave lots of precious things behind me.......... love this song so much!
