To be fair aggrigation was done with the best of intention but it ended up killing region television cuz the powers at be kept cutting back on locally produced content.
What Hawke had to say for that WIN intro was contemptuous in the least.
Him and his fat slob, kiddie fiddling Comms minister, Bob Collins had too many free lunches with Big Kerry who always got his way.
Kerry realised regionals paying for the whole was actually greater than the parts he was getting and wanted this as many times over as possible. Original schemes for aggregation had a lot more than the 4 fully aggregated markets across the eastern seaboard we now have.
I still say Fed Govt should pay out ie. compulsory acquire 1 station in each area and bring back local programming. Digital TV will still allow for the former content to be shown.
Both Prime and MMG (10) are drowning in debt, so buy one up, tear up the licence and mandate the remaining stations to increase local content.
The return of viability would increase much more than one third thus allowing full local news services and other local programming as well as more active local involvement.
I don't see the point of network affiliates. Why cant Ten and Nine follow Seven by expanding into regional areas like seven has done in most of Queensland? The only places where Seven have affiliates are in the far remotes areas of QLD e.g Mount Isa, Longreach etc.
WIN now covers the Nine watermarks with their own ugly things, but most of the time, WIN Mackay don't watermark the Nine logo in the news.
You're right, it'd improve quality when we have no quantity of local programming, why not focus only on local news as 7 Qld does and does well.
7 is in Qld as they own the licence. They cannot own any further regional licences as it'd push them above the population threshold.
Blame Kerry Packer, he might've run a great station, but wrecked regional TV, leaning on Hawke for many more aggregated markets than we have-even more unsustainable.
@MicMogul you can blame Christopher Skase for forcing aggregation upon regional NSW, QLD and VIC. In Victoria the then Six Network and Southern Cross strongly opposed aggregation, they both tried to block it and failed. These networks could not get the seven affiliation because Prime got it because of Skase's power.
Terrific video. Not too sure about the history of regional TV in W.A. but GWN used to broadcast all the top shows in regional W.A. (whether it be 7, 9, or 10 programming). That changed in '99 when GWN signed on to become a affiliate of Prime before WIN television commenced broadcasting in W.A.
There is now talk that there may be another WIN channel on the way to broadcast Network 10 programming.
And I wonder how long that will take for the networks to commit. It's only now I think that GWN has gone digital. While everyone in the rest of Australia is gearing up for digital transmission, the regionals in W.A. are just doing absolutely nothing. W.A. ( Wait Awhile )
I agree, regional WA is in the last round to switch off analogue.
It will likely be longer as Bruce Gordon of WIN bleats about the cost of all the small sites needing conversion not worth the return - remember the switch on of WIN in WA, brought kicking and screaming to the the table to cover all TX sites in the remote WA licence area.
I almost spit my coffee at the computer screen. I guess Prime was like that old guy at the start, & didn't know what to do with themselves late at night...
Also interesting to note that '89 was a time WIN couldn't really give a shit how many times the Nine logo made it to air!
Oh, I agree with your last point (I'd rather have WeatherWatch on SBS than infomercials).
Yet, as long as I can remember, Prime & Seven have been side by side on programming during the day (apart from 9am, until recently) & prime time. But after midnight... Well, that's another story!
Until WIN started fucking things up in 2001, Prime held the mantel of being the anti-metro regional network in Australia. Now WIN makes them look good...
Yes, I'd say airing a Nine promo/ID during the day would've been unusual for WIN.
Yet, I remember before 2001 (Wimbledon telecast to be exact), WIN would take Nine's dirty feed (GTV for Hobart) every night after midnight & just leave their little yellow watermark in the top-right of the screen to remind us they were still alive. Before 2001, WIN would never cover Nine's watermark too & the local news was the only difference in programming... Ahh! Those were the days! :)
I doubt very much that WIN would call themselves "a member of the Nine Network" today (given the recent disagreement, WIN putting their watermark over the "9" on news and sports programmes, not screening Kerri-Anne etc), nor would Prime call themselves "a member of the Seven Network" (as they screen a lot of different programmes to Seven at some times of the day esp. overnight, their idents and promos are different in look to Seven).
30/3/89 will always be remembered for Win Television starting it's national expansion as a Nine affilate which eventually made WIN the 9 affilate for the majority of the nation including the two capital city affiliates (Adelaide & Perth).
Glad you liked it, amazing what one can find on old video tapes, but I do remember recording this & thought it something keeping from the annals of Aussie TV history.
Yeah lost all our jobs after that!!!

There will be when GWN and WIN commit to a full DTV rollout.
In a market with ~500K, one station was very profitable,
GWN still probably gets 70-80% of the ad spend but it makes the DTV rollout a line-ball profit position.
The channel 10 will be a joint venture as in Mildura, Tas & Darwin.

Why shouldn't prime have aired NBC Today? Seven aired it! At least it was better than those god awful infomercials.

I'd rather watch a test patten than informercials. At least with GO! and One HD I now have an alternative. Sport or Music Videos.

I'd say the technology was too expensive or not around for WIN to get rid of the Nine logo.
