  • This guy moves so effing fast that you can actual hear the wind make "whooshing" sounds when he moves. I would hate to be caught in a dark alley with this dude.

  • sorry its crap !!!!

  • I like the analysis here and the appreciation of the philosophical roots, which is key in truly understanding most any tradition forms of martial arts. The last application seems particularly useful; I'll keep it in mind for frontal grabs. Thanks for the insight!

  • Excelent, Thank you so much

  • Sensei this is a very brilliant teaching aid. Thank you for sharing this valuable video.

  • Awesome Thanks for the movements and breaking down step by step!

  • Is it only me or do Karate have a little to many kata forms? Its really hard to learn them all.

  • Cool. An original Okinawan version of Kanku Dai, Chatanyara Kusanku (one of many), has the opening move as defense against a bear hug from behind with the arms on the sides and underneath the attacker's wrapping arms by the midsection. That version has the same forward rising of the arms, as per kata, and the pushing of the butt backwards (while bending forward) into the attacker, unbalancing him. So many interpretations!!

  • great aplicatins, great philosophy, true karate

  • this is very good, thanks for sharing.

katas in karate hides many practical & effective techniques, a true karateka must practice truthfully, slowly & patiently. slow then fast until it becomes natural.

once he unlocks it, he/she has to share it for the growth & development of our beloved art.

by the way reflection & meditation can help a lot.

  • Some of this is close, but definitely not original Okinawan tuite.

  • *masters

  • Karate is a striking art. It is fast and lethal. The goal of Karate is to put the enemy on the deck as quickly as possible in such a way that he does not get up. It does this primarily through attacks on the skeletal system. It is not about submissions and twists that tie you to an opponent. You have been watching too much MMA. Remember, that is a sport. They are fighting only one person, and are doing their best NOT to hurt them.

  • Grapples are meant to break joints in real life. The submission is just to admit when your opponent has the lock far enough you can't escape and omits the follow up to keep competitors from dying. The tournament systems are limited, but the original styles themselves are still valid.

  • @keydet035 I agree with u. Every series on movements are to down the attacker. This is NOT real bunkai.. he's guessing

  • The first part of the kata when correctly done is the movements for a release from a standing rear naked choke.

Put the kata back how it should be and stop p#ssing about with things dude

  • Your understanding is to ridged, open your mind, he said application one of many

  • yeah it was a knifehand striking the neck and lower jaw.

  • Some interesting ideas but, the rear grab release will not work if the person is much stronger and bigger...It needs a slight adjustment to make it work in every situation.....think opening move of Heian Yondan...sorry don't want to sound like a smart a**e.

Also any time you practice against a "karate stepping punch" you loose any reality in the self defence technique you are trying to learn......

  • This had nothing to do with kanku dai or kushanku kata.

People need to get real and practice against live resistance.

Ex prisoners who have been jailed for violance are the best people to prove if something works or not.

Not karate ka who throw basic training punches.

When will the western karate world wake up

  • You're right in one sense. Hard to say that. I do myself "innovations" in martial arts (so probably techniques that already exist, but I have my own forms and version). And it's true that the bunkaïs and such also have to be trained. The speed of the demonstration was not convincing. But finding out bunkaïs is not so exceptional, many have done it before.

  • Do you feel that Karate has a little to many kata forms? Its really hard to learn.

  • Sure. You can't learn all the forms. And you have to learn in a progressive way. At the beginning, you don't know more forms than a boxer does. Try to learn only when you feel bored.

  • Interesting... Some o dat look like it's from Aikido tho.

  • FZ : Os teacher

thank you it was very Good and clear

  • Elctronikita is at best assumptious. Who says I'm an American? Can't carry a thought forward so you must getting down to country and it's people? Limited intelligence. Carry on the debate on karate techniques plain please IQ25.

  • are u wit the jka

  • Get real everybody. Any street fights nowadays involve guns. You dont even need to be near to shoot at someone. Same for intruders at home. Martial arts at best can go only this far folks.

  • street fights involve guns? In states yes, because ur government isn't strong enough, or has little understanding of problem+ ur people r too stubborn.

  • See karate vs. pimp and you will see an application of the backfist (uraken) from this kata in the street.

  • I believe in dat vid, he used a knifehand.

  • This is a creative interpretation of movements that were originally performed as part of a sun-worship posture (the opening look-through-the-hands maneuver) in Okinawan folk dance.

When you study the Okinawan kata the Shotokan forms were based on (e.g., Kusanku-dai), and the Chinese forms the Okinawan kata came from (e.g., Whooping Crane), you find it's not so pragmatic. ;)

  • Great stuff. Enjoyed the vid.

  • you put any fighter in an ally with a guy that has a knife and it doesnt really matter how many times they have done katas the will be cut. stop all this nonsense.

  • A true karate man would not be in the alley in first place. I have trained in an MMA gym and in jiu-jitsu, aikido, and kendo dojos; wrestled over 10 yrs; trained in karate for over 20 years. I trained under Rickson and Royce Gracie. My karate senior is a direct student of Funakoshi. Your ignorance makes you weak. Learn and do kata. Learn what Irimi is. Kata is not spiritual it's combat you only figure that out after many kata. You sound like the young me...:)

  • you dont have to be in an ally to be attacked in a city. and im sorry i just find the aplication of katas to be less then effective. in the time it takes to learn the katas you could spend it in the gym learning western boxing, or muay thai, or brazilian jiu jitsu, or sambo, or judo, or wrestling all of which have more direct effect in a fight then a kata.

  • are you serious mma is great for self defense much more so then katas and if you think otherwise i suggest you actually go to an mma gym instead of trying to blindly trying to understand it through a ppv.

  • What is MMA? There is no true definition. It is an acronum that is too losely applied these days. I trained in Jiu Jitsu before UFC and before a "MMA" McDojo was on every corner and yes I trained with Royce and Rickson Gracie. I also train in Karate-Do. Kata has a deep and hidden side to it that takes years to figure out. In fact, only after one truly reflects on application and Irimi can one figure this out...so you I hope that someday everyone can have the change to discover this.

  • MMA isnt just jiu jitsu thats only one part to the puzzle. I still have yet to see a set kata move work in reat time sparing. they might have some secret spiritual stuff and what not but show me it working in a fight.

  • A kata move like a punch? You've not seen a punch working? Weird.

  • Every technique you see in MMA is from a kata or a segment of a kata. I love MMA but you can only fight for so long. And BOxing wrestling etc for the most part requires a partner kata provides a way to practices self defense techniques namely stand up grappling without the use of a partner. It has value but you most learn to apply the techniques or atleast know what the techinques are in the kata for it to be useful in MMA or street application. OSS

  • the difference is in an mma platform you dont have compliant partners. most karate dojos dont have live sparing (point sparing is a joke). The problems i have with this instructional is that the guy is never protecting his chin and most of the movement leaves your entire body open for attack. its not an efficent way to block with a violent attacker.

  • I agree, but that is the problem with the teacher the the style. My teacher would make us practice compliant partners to first learn the technique then we would go live. You have to start compliant then move on to live. If you can't utilize a technique with a compliant partner forget about a resistant partner. Judo and/or Jujitsu have been doing that for years. Now I don't particularly like this demonstration either and I agree that point sparring is ridiculous.

  • UFC is real, street fighting. Most street fights end up on the ground, or use weapons, etc. They do NOT involve Kata moves. Kata is great for learning the moves of the discipline, fitness, etc, but not street fighting and survival. For that, I'll train with the Gracies any time.

  • Before you blast a reply just answer if you have done enough kata for your reply. I am 43,I have been grappling since 2nd grade. I was a state champion wrestler. I train in BJJ (Gracie) and karate (Tsutomo Ohshima -youtube him for credentials). I, unlike you, am by no means discounting any art. I think too many people express opinions about kata when they have no basis. I was once guilty. After 21 yrs of kata I FINALLY get it. Remember strong mind defeats technique.

  • Maybe you need some help in reading comprehension. Where, in my statement, did I blast Kata? Nowhere. I stated that kata has its place, and is great for technique, fitness, and discipline. You may modify it for real street fighting but actual kata moves have nothing to do with real street fighting. That's not blasting kata. Oh, by the way, I did several years of American Kenpo karate + Krav Maga, and I grappled, did stand-up fighting, as well as Kata. I loved Kata.

  • Look at the mirror and then reread my post. I did not say you blasted kata. I said before you blast a reply. Obviously, you did blasted a reply.

  • The UFC is what everyone day dreams real fighting is like. It's comforting to think that it's just like sparring.

  • Wrong most fights don't end up on the ground unless you are a cop and your trying to arrest or gain complete control of your opponent. In a self defense situation I am not trying arrest nor control (unless Im attacked in my home) I wouldnt recommend take opponent to the ground even if it is in the mounted postion because you would be in terrible position for whats called "third party entry"

  • These are very interesting bunkai, and some look effective. There are some pretty good bunkai in the Iain Abernethy Bunkai-jutsu series also.

  • these bunkai don't work in real combat. the so called meanings are what i like to call reaching to find a purpose for a move.

  • sorry but the first technique in kanku dai it's haishu uké. There no application whith the first movement, this not a technique, no techique no application.

  • this is too much to think about and to much to do, too much movement for an accul fight, wing tsun is ALOT more effective

  • "And Americans even more so for trying to imitate them through MMA" I laughed hard and long due to this sentence! Osu

  • good vid man, practical. thanks

  • what style is that ? I knew kanku dai as a shotokan kata, but in state of the kitty you have some other symbol.

  • Comparisons are odious and are usually made by people who lack experience and don't want to put in the time to attain it and take short cuts.MMA is a short cut for the impatient eager to glorify their egos and hurt people.I have fought MMA PEOPLE and won by some very nasty methods that go outside the rules. The point is it doesn't matter what you study if you don't have what it takes to use savage brutal methods then it comes down to who has the best "trick" or gets lucky.

    NISEI KENPO

  • what shit, karate is a waste of time, learn boxing and BJJ or thaiboxing and sambo if you want to learn how to fight and defend yourself

  • why search for a Karate Kata video if you feel this way? seems to me like you are very angry and maybe not at peace in the systems you have learned to want to lash out at other peoples art.

  • Fighterx, the first part of what you said makes little to no sense. That aside, there were some decent apps. here, and at least the guy knows how to apply the stuff that's in his form. The only part that sucks is when he gets existential at the end. Otherwise, not bad.

  • How are americas trying to imitate tradition martial arts through mma first off brazil first started vale tudo then brought it here and second if anything mma cuts all the bullshit out of martial arts and only does what is effect in a real life situation. You are never going to disarm a man who has a gun or a knife you will die if you try its that simple and im postive that if you train one year mma you will be a much better fighter than if you train one year of karate.

  • Granted for means of self defense there are plenty of programs that you can learn quickly that are effective if that is your goal. Karate is a path, a way to enlightnment, a way to learn about the human condition. For it to be effective system of self defense it may take many years of training. I can tell you this if you train front kick and reverse punch for 20 years it will be effective and devastating to who ever is on the receiving end of it.

  • karate is real self-defence,

it has been used for hand to hand combat for hundreds of years. everyone from the samurai to the u.s. marines use(d) it. so me thinks you no not what you say.

  • Me thinks you have never been in a real fight.

  • many actually, and if you're ever in winnipeg canada...

  • lol old man if you want to attend a throwdown id be more then happy to humble you.

  • MMA takes bits and pieces from a variety of martial arts: so they are prepared for a sport.

  • me thinks you only fight other meat heads with no clue. the blind leading the blind are still blind and lost.

  • Lastly, I like to train for two on one because these days nobody goes out alone and if you do get into a alteracation is more then likely going to me two or even more. One on one are rare in the real world. MMA is a nice sport and there are some things you cant take from it but always remember its a sport and sports should not be compared to real life fights because thats just dangerious.

  • Id take a sport fighter over a regular street fighter in a fight any day of the week to think that a professional fighter would lose to an average joe on the street just cause groin kicks and hair pulling are allowed seems ridiculous to me.

  • Opinions vary!

  • As an officer I have disarmed subjects with a gun and knife. Keep in mind most people you role up to on the street don't know how to fight nor do they now how to properly hold a knife or gun. They go by what they see on TV.

  • ha ha ha!! my dear fighterx (or whatever your name is), Brazilians are known for 3 things: samba, football, and transvestites...! who are YOU to say that asian martial arts (from Japan, more particularly) aren't as effective as that mumbo-jumbo sport you so praise, when Japanese have been a nation at war for thousands of years?

  • then why has every single tma have some type of disarming tech for knives, more recently guns. if it didnt work back then when knives and blades were the primary weapons the guys teaching the tech would have died and not passed on the techs. second the fact that you believe its impossible there for useless to learn how to disarm a weapon proves you dont even look at your own mma. gracies even tried to come up with street defence for weapons. now they sucked but even they gave it a shot.

  • It´s your problem is only to wait the 24 hours to have a problem (fight)on the street, it´s ok your mma.

But live it´s more of that...only some professional people have fight as their job.

NORMAL people need other thing, because live is long, but health not ever. There are a lot of good thing to do for health in mind and body... one of them is TRADITIONAL MARTIAL ARTS!!!

  • i have no idea what you just said

  • Why on earth would you preach that katas work in real life/bar fight situations it simplely isnt all that effective.

  • So you mean to tell me that the Okinawans, Chinese, and Japanese practiced techniques that have been useless for thousands fo years. Sounds like they are pretty damn stupid. And Americans even more so for trying to imitate them through MMA.

  • why on earth would YOU search for a Kata video if you feel this bitter towards them? (fighterX) If your so content in your "MMA" then go watch those videos instead. zzz

  • i didnt search it it came up on a related vid from a mma vid. Why is it so wrong to tell people that katas don't work.

  • This is the funniest "applications" demonstration ever.

I would love to see someone doing that on the street

  • ... I really miss martial arts.

  • Most detailed bunkai of the first moves that I have come across. Thanks a lot sensei!

  • Thanks I'm going to video the applicatios for the kata over the next couple of weeks more coming

  • hey Sensei. it is Brendan. these kanku dai videos are great. i cant wait for this semester to end so i can come back and do some training.

  • Look forward to seeing you
