Wow.. 'Exaggeration' is the word for this documentary. You should better expose the english defeats in 1589 (Contraarmada) and 1741 (Cartagena de Indias).
And by the way, Spain remained as first world power until the 1660's when FRANCE (not England) under Louis XIV became new power in Europe!
Another great episode. It was pivotal war that utimately changed both the Spain & England. Some of the Spanish who crashed in Ireland mingled w/ the local Irish. That's where the "Black Irish" comes from.
@smithbrain, idiot. How can a country be good or evil? People are good and evil, not countries, and the british have proven much more often in history to be evil than the spanish.
@MrBIBBLEDOG Your so dumb you cant even spell revolution.. DOESNT YOUR COMPUTER HAVE SPELL CHECK?? and this war was before the revolution.. LIKE WAY BEFORE.
just currious, where there any Welsh sailors? England and Wales had been united when the Welsh King of England (King Henry VII) became king, but I don't know if the Welsh were famous for being good sailors as well.
When the English captured the remaining washed up Spanish sailors on the Irish coast and sold them back to Spain... it had by that time resulted in humiliation and a national tragedy for Spain. I also saw a video on this war showing the English lighting up beacons when they first caught sight of the Spanish Armada approaching on the sw coast and the beacon lighting quickly spread to the rest of the country and notifiied ppl they had reached our horizons. Very clever system of the English.

We have a very dark history. Full of greed and arrogance. But I am glad to say that we, as a nation, have changed and now show more respect to our heroes and noble allies.
Nonsense! This Armada story is misleading. While the Spanish did lose the 1588 sea battle, the Spanish Navy did subsequently recover to gradually gain control of the sea lanes and wining most of the ensuing naval battles. By 1603, after Queen Elizabeth's death, James I sued for peace because a financially exhausted England could no longer continue and the peace treaty of 1604 cemented most of Spain's goals for the war.
What kind of a nation would rather kill its heroes rather than reward them. I feel pity for the British people, serving a crown that is based on greed and arrogance. No government with such goals is worth to fight and die for.
@zaho87 First you say crown then government. And you write about events that happened 500 years ago as if they are now. Also, take a look at the history of medieval Bulgaria and tell me you don't find anything as bad.
@zaho87 They fought for their country and independance not for a government. The USA government in the form of Lincoln attacked the southern states for his own ambitions and then used the slave situation to gather support and shame any european country from supporting the 'rebels'. Think before you comment, please.
@Grimrippa1 Soldiers fight because they are ordered by their government. This applies to every nation, USA is not an exception. Independence, liberty and so on are just motives and causes, but wars are wars, no matter the political or personal goals. You should think about it.
@Graham6762 doesnt really matter if they refuse to pay you and leave you to rot on the open seas... Way to go, this pretty much shows how most nations got their victories; over the backs of underpaid, underrewarded and unreconized folksmen... And then they wonder why piracy got a boost around that period...
@zaho87 I feel sorry for the discriminating Catholic spanish , for what did they get for serving the pope - seven virgins and a nice house in heaven promise.
As if the crown couldn't afford to pay them. Even if they had to raise taxes and even if they had to wait for the economy to pick up (not sure how much money they had or how well the economy was doing) they could have still paid them, they all should have been given a knighthood. Also history shows that if money circulates, money is made. I know I would have rewarded my people well...
@mongoose100989 I would say that the british defeat in 1741 in Cartagena de Indias was more legendary. The armada invencible had only 126 ships, when England attacked Cartagena they sent 186 ships, this time, there was no weather, only brave 3000 spanish soldiers that defeated 27000 english!!!!
THIS BATTLE IS LEGENDARY but you dont know of it because the english historiography wanted (and wants) to rub out this humilliation from history.
England everyone we love our heroes till we have to pay for them. xD

The Chinese who built the Great Wall used lanterns between each post to signal messages between one another for HUNDREDS OF MILES.
If invasion was imminent, the Chinese would have notice far before their invaders arrived.

There's a few areas I fail to understand, if anyone could please explain...
i./ What method of communication did sailors use at sea in this era?
ii./ Why did the Spanish carry treasures and gold with them whilst going to war?
scarletjamable 1 year ago
Very interesting documentary, quite humourous in parts, although it ended very tragically for both the Spanish and English sailors.
Unfortunately, the English crown still behaves disgracefully to war veterans to this day.
The Spanish Armada was an impressive and handsome fleet and must have been most terrifying to have been viewed approaching the British Isles.
The different military tactics employed by both sides were extremely interesting to observe.
Beautifully presented.
