If we can't speak French learn German and speak to the French in a language they would be speaking now without USA. The French have had a history with that language.
What's so great about Europe anyway? Greece is fucked, Spain is fucked. And some experts predict that Italy will be the next Spain. So what's so great about Europe? All these countries might be doing worse than we are(not that we are in a better condition).
Also, it's a PATHETIC lie that Europeans claim that they can all communicate with each other because they can speak each other's language. Back in the old days, the language that EVERYONE used was French. It's now English.
@ttiiyy EU countries don't have this massive debt that the US has. Also, they have the best wine, the best vacation spots, and less crime. Although personally, I prefer Japan.
Do conservatives REALLY have zero problems wtih the way Americans behave or act in ANY way today? Do they REALLY think we're a perfect fucking nation? Come on! No nation is perfect, for christ sake. "My country right or wrong" is the worst idea ever. You should hold your country accountable when it screws up and praise her when she does good. You'd do the same for your kids, subordinates, etc.
Well, if your country or your countrymen are doing STUPID, EMBARRASSING things, why is it not ok to call them out on it? I'm so SICK of this bullshit from the Right that you can't EVER criticize this country or its people. Because if you do, you're somehow "elitist" or "doesn't believe in America" or some nonsensical crap like that. You've gotta have unquestioning loyalty to America, just like a dog to his master. I mean, WTF. It's fucking infantile is what it is.
Obama is a third world president. He's anti-American, post-modern, atheistic, believes in totalitarianism, and his associates are crooks, liars, and fanatics. Obama came from nowhere, has no American values, has nothing to give or offer, and is going nowhere. He's an ACORN organizer with ACORN's Marxist beliefs.
They could not have been more wrong. I live in one of the largest cities in the USA, where over twenty languages plus are spoken daily in all sectors, schools, hospitals, business. Thanks to our president and others who realize that the real world is NOT lived in a monolingual bubble here in the USA or overseas. Yes I am a proud American born and bred.
@accentworkwear Finally an US American who sees that being ignorant is not acceptable!! Why is the US soooooo scared of learning another language. Everyone else has to why shouldn't they!?
@NEKOCHANNiE Well well well, I must answer. French is an official/co-official language in 30 countries. French and English are the only two languages in the world that are spoken on the five continents. There are about 500'000'000 of French speakers in the world, making French the fifth most spoken language of the world. English is two. French is the second most important language after English for economic/cultural/diplomatic influence.
@shewiki116 Well, I'm talking about europe. And I'm tired of the french special status in europe. Everything that is concerning all of europe is in english....and in french. (I'm thinking about things such as eurovision song contest) Why should everyone learn english, but the french people don't have to? I believe there are more german-speaking viewers than french of ESC, so why not translate it into german?
@NEKOCHANNiEI understand your point of view, but here is the thing : I will take per exemple Danish people. No one in the world also speaks Danish. Same thing for Swedish or German. So, they have to learn another language to establish communication with other people. But for French, the situation is different. There are so many other French speaking-places in the world, so they don't feel like they MUST learn another language. French is important, that's all.
@NEKOCHANNiE Differences between low and big spoken languages are important, but it will continue this way in the future. The most spoken languages today will be even more spoken in the future, such as Chinese, English, Spanish, and of course, French, which is the second most learned language in the world after English.
But I don't really understand why some people are bored and annoyed about it. Is it just beacause Frenc people don't want to study foreign languages ?? Or something else ??
@NEKOCHANNiE French is the second most spoken language in Europe after German, but the second most learned one after English. In the entire world, French is the second most learned language after English. By 2020, giving the improving situation in French speaking-part of Africa and the increasing number of people living in French speaking-part of elswhere in the world, there could be 700 millions French speakers in the world, which makes 10% of humanity.
@NEKOCHANNiE It will even overtake Hindi (spoken in India) and reach number four in the most spoken language in the world, just behind Spanish. So no, France is not the only country. And by the way, the country which has the biggest population of French speakers is not France.
Well i say we should all be linguistic, i speak two languages and am in my way to learn my third then my fourth which would be French and last but not least my fifth which is the one i Really want to learn and that would be Japanese. I see languages as a way to explore ones culture and by me doing do i become more in tune to outside cultures that i wouldnt have known of otherwise. It does not hurt...I say shame on people, why should you limit yourself to only one.
sinistar......The reason Obama is Pesident is (alongside his false hope) because he promised change, which yes, weve seen change but is it change for the good?
I wish I had been taught multiple languages growing up. While I disagree with Obama in many regards, this is one of his opinions i agree with. Why is it that we have one of the world's richest economies and yet we invest so little in our education system?! We are so far behind the world in so many areas and it should embarrass any American who values education and the preservation of our standing on the world stage.
hey jackass the official language of america is english... and you have to learn it to LEGALLY live here... so what does that tell you about who doesnt know enghlish?
While speaking other languages is a definite benefit, (I speak 2 in addition to English), the government mandating the learning of additional languages is not the answer. This notion of being embarrassed about America is the paragon of arrogance and elitism. Obama just doesn't get it. The government is not the answer to all your hopes and prayers. If you want a better life for yourself, go out and make it. The added costs for bilingual education to state education budgets is crippling.
I've always thought the same thing. In Holland you can't graduate high school unless you speak 4 languages. It IS embarrassing. But conservatives don't like to hear anything but USA is #1 and straight white Christian males are Gods gift to everything and can do no wrong. Admitting there is a problem is the first step toward making things better... something Republicans can't stand. God I hate cons.
That's not communism. A person who speaks more languages has more choices, and will do better in a competitive job market. More knowledge = more freedom. What's wrong with wanting to do better?
So by your logic math and science shouldn't be "imposed on people" either right? If a kid doesn't feel like learning to read should we respect that and not try to give him an education?
For his recent trip to the Middle East, did he speak English or did he take the time to learn all of their languages? What a schmuck this guy is...The reason that everyone knows English is because we are the greatest contributor to the world economy (who knows for how much longer). If I step in a foregin store, they better be able to speak English, or I won't buy their product. What language should we uniformly learn? Whatever language we choose, won't it be insulting to the other countries?
They have money too. And guess what.. it's worth more --so it's kind of the other way around. We can't afford to be arrogant anymore. What our grandfathers and great grandfathers did in WWII was almost 70 years ago (when we had a Democrat in office who brought the country together for the common good) --We can't expect Europeans to bow down to us forever.
I think he is right on about Americans' lack of command of other languages. Then again, in a lot of other countries, learning English puts one in a position of privilege for jobs and such while in the USA there are less incentives to learn other languages because English is so hegemonic in the first place. If the only thing Obama can say about this is that it is "embarrassing", it isn't a very deep observation. However, supporting multilingualism would be a big change for the USA.
He is infallible, BHO keeps putting his foot in his mouth, but you guys who are drinking the coolade, just can't see it. I just hope America wakes up in time.
You're thinking of McCain. Ever been to the Iraq/Pakistan border lately? (there isn't one) lol. How about the country of Czechoslovakia (nope not there) McCain is constantly saying completely retarded things, but the right-wing media puts Obama under a microscope reaching for even the tiniest excuse to find controversy. Obama can say "please pass the salt" at breakfast and these crumb-snatchers will try to spin it like he's the Anti-Christ.
Get real, sinistar99, riding the Government gravy train will NEVER make your dreams come true.
McCain has nothing to do with Obama's incompetence or "passing the salt". How about "Government off my back, and out of my life". Keep drinking the koolade!
What incompetence? I've never heard Obama promise "a government gravy train"... but it would be nice to have a government that works for the American people rather than just Exxon Chevron and Halliburton Kbr etc. The Government gravy train has sure been making their dreams come true these last 7 years! We had a lot smaller government and a lot less government spending 8 years ago. If you want bigger bloated more intrusive Government vote McCain!
Riding the goverment gravy train can pay off, just ask any neocon, lobbyist, or CEO's of major corporations. Can some Americans actually be afraid of having a broader perspective...? I guess so.
dude its exactly the opposite! obama has hung out with shady characters his whole life and yet noone says jack squat! he steps on flags, turns around during the pledge, openly supports socialism and yet the friggin media WORSHIPS him
No one says jack squat? So all that Bill Ayres on the News for 3 months that was an hallucination? Those Rev Wright clips over and over on every god damned channel that didn't happen? Hmmm.

If you know french, good for you. That will make you able to speak to french people. (even though they know english, alot refuse to speak it.)
