To penetrate the Maginot line he needed to cross the ardennes, it was more of a strategic approach, rather then sending troops charging into a heavily fortified defence line. French approach was defence, German approach was Blitzkrieg.

@mmedefarge to take a dispassionate stance is the way to investigate and interpret history. i think the word "genius" in reference to hitler had to do with the way he solidified germany and gave them a vision of dominance on such a grand scale. his military acumen probably was over the top and unpractical. it sometimes is the trait of a genius of one skill to assume he is a genius across the board. the fact that hitler hated sports probably caused a military deffenciency ie a chronic nerdship.

Britain declared war on Germany when they invaded Poland (conveniently forgetting to declare war on the USSR for invading Poland). What did Britain do after declaring war for Poland? Absolutely nothing and at the end of the war Britain just abandoned Poland and left it to 50 years of Communist misery. Britain was not bombing innocent civilians for payback for other countries.

My grandfather fought in WWII. He always says till today, that not many people back those days had a job or food, economy was weak. Then Hitler came and everyone saw bred on their table and getting a job. That i think, displays the best way how important a growing and healthy economy is, in order not to knee down in front of somebody like him. @Dukilein1984 my family came from germany. they barely had any food. at least 5 of my grandmothers siblings starved to death or died of typhus. They knew what it was like to be hungry, to be humiliated. My great grandfather was a decorated war hero from WWI but he was sent to the ghetto just the same as every other jew. He insisted on going with a train full of children headed to birkenau and was never heard from again. hunger and war dont justify inhumanity and evil actions.
