@235chuck in the US, bikes are like automobiles, same rules of the road AND the same rights.  they don't have to 'hug the shoulder.' Auto drivers need to remember that passing them is like passing another car, same rules apply.

Bicyclists don't need insurance, a license, or license plates, inspections, and in most states don't have to wear helmets or other mandated items. They DO need to "hug the shoulder" cause if they don't they: A. Can get hit really easy, B. F#%k up traffic, C. Force vehicles to swerve into another lane which may in turn push the outer lane into the oncoming traffic lane. Doesn't work well in reality. Laws are often blind!!

@235chuck 4 the record, I ride a bicycle, motorcycle, & drive myself. I've seen people hurt and killed on the road. I see close call accidents all the time because a bicyclist is almost using up half the lane, rather than hugging the shoulder or riding off road. Your rules apply in the city, but on busy streets, or in the country, they don't seem to be the norm! This isn't a matter of "get out of my way, I'm bigger." It's a matter of safety and courtesy. My 1st comment is out of frustration!

A. they should know the laws regarding bicycles on the road and watch out for them.

B. they are traffic, too. Vehicle drivers have to deal with other slow vehicles, tractors, horse and buggy, for instance.

C. Bicycles do not have this power. Only inattentive drivers who can't keep their cars under control would swerve into other lanes.

I suggest a review of the rules of the road in your area.

@235chuck I'm not sure how you came to the erroneous conclusion that I don't drive an automobile. A bicycle is a vehicle and has the same rights to the road as a four wheel vehicle. There are roads that they aren't allowed to drive on, interstate highways for example. Where bicycles are allowed on the road, they are to be considered as another vehicle, albeit a slow moving one. Automobiles are required to pass them as they would any other car/motorcycle.
