I am Michael Jackson... I'm not dead yet people.... And I say, Bruce does this song pretty well, so boogie down and enjoy it, Jackie would have wanted it that way! (To all my fans out there.. don't worry, I'm actually living in New Zealand now because I'm a big fan of Lord of the Rings and have a new part (as a gobblin obviously) in the upcoming Hobbit movies... so look out for me, I'm the one leading the attack on the Hobbit children....) Heal the World people.
Bruce played this last night live at the Philly Spectrum, it was electrifying, just an amazing version and a great tribute to those who came before him.
The essence of Jackie will only gets better, when Stars like the Boss sing a tribute to the greatest of all time. The Boss does Jakie no favors, none-the-less this is a great tribute, and the Boss shines even-more. Keep it coming Boss.
Springsteen has always payed tribute to those musicians who have inspired him: Roy Orbison, Elvis, Otis Redding, Bob Dylan, and Mitch Ryder to name a few. This is another great example of him honoring the music that inspired him. He never sets out to make it his own-he just likes to sing these songs the way his fans sing along to him. Besides, he's the Boss-he can do as he damn well pleases!!!!! GO BRUCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a treat this was--thanks soooooooo much for posting!!!
The asswipes bitching and moaning about Bruce's cover are just uncreative, close-minded idiots who only want to live their lives being dull-witted copycats and expect everyone else to do the same. Bruce believed in himself and dared to do his own thing and that's why he's a mega star.
The criticism of "not as good as Jackie Wilson's original" misses the point--this is not Bruce trying to pull off a Hendrix 'All Along the Watchtower"--this is just supposed to be a big, fun, shambling tribute to Motown and Wilson.
Bruce was a real synthesis of different musical personalities--i, for one, always got excited when his R & B side came out, as it does in this song
if you ever had the opportunity to see Bruce back then as I have then you wouldn't bash the man. His energy was amazing and I got hooked in 1973 and still am. The best live show ever and I have seen a bunch. Stones, Zeppelin, Dylan, Allman Bros. B.B. King, Prince, Dave Mathews, and too many to mention.
And one day, when Miss Patti(bless her soul)is wheeling poor Bruce, his knees blown out by one too many Flying Springsteens into random camerapersons, outside thde Old Rock Stars Home,it will be remarked, likely by me that,"There goes Bruce Springsteen, the best that ever was." And to think he wanted to play baseball...whatEVER....
Man!... I could'nt agree more! I went to a total of 8 Springsteen shows in 1978. And everyone was different and more compelling as the shows went on. A lot of groups and artists start to burn out. And as the tours are ending they get tired and there performances suffer for a lack of effort.
i was never around when music was real music, wish i was and envy those who were, one day hopefully something similar will come back and we can all taste the majic once more
INteresting..I was born in Boston during this tour, 3/24/77. And the Boss was in Columbus, OH on 3/24/08 on my 31st birthday, where I live now. Cool stuff!
just imagine how wonderful this show must have been. Bruce as we all love him, stretching out the songs til it feels like everythings exploding in a big orgasmic climax :D
Lots of fun Bruce style.

I think this is utterly brilliant, a true tribute, taking it and turning it into something of yourself, not mimicry but TRIBUTE!!

You gotta ignore it! Eveerybody has a right to thier versions of what Bruce is or was.
But he was more real than any performer I have known.

I love ya, Boss, but you ain't Jackie Wilson.
Check out Jackie's live performance of the same song on YouTube. He was a dynamo.

Jesus, he doesn't even know the lyrics. Did he have any idea what the words were before he chose to do this or was he too drunk to sing them???

Jackie Wilson would have personally kicked his ass for butchering, nay, mutilating such a great song this way..

Bruce and some of the ESB played it twice more that year with the Asbury Jukes. Sometime in May and new years if I'm right.

Bruce and an all star band also did this song at the rock and roll hall of fame. You can find the vid here on Youtube.

why is bruce singing a jackie Wilson song?
benten1995 3 years ago
Well, benten 1995!
I could be going out on a limb here, but I think it's quite likely that Bruce is singing a Jackie Wilson song because he WANTS to!
..just my opinion.
