Ive heard a lot of people talk about what the track makes them think of. They're all good but for me its like a viking longboat coming out of the mists. Damp..menacing..Silent. Love it :) RDJ for ever!
@TimeForBold - Well, I don't know, but honestly, I think the resemblamce is more than superficial. Have you listened to the Coil's track with the same name? The synth part on Aphex Twin's is almost the same on that Coil's track.
@MBratifisch1 Yeah I love the Coil track, but both song's melodic qualities are relatively minimalistic, could they not just be different chords assembled in a coincidentally similar way? They are similar sounding though and you have made wonder.
I'm also cautious though because Aphex Twin has claimed to have submitted original tracks for remix jobs and having them submitted, so who knows really...
The story I heard behind this song is that the original is Coil, R.D. James remixed it, and turned it into this (this is obvious, it's just sampled, slowed down, and drums added). Then Trent asked him to remix/produce a NIN song, so he gave him this. The whole thing was Richard making a joke, imo.
I heard this on a NIN album and played it over and over again and thought it was Trent the whole time. 3 year later and 3 years of listening to Aphex twin did I discover I was listening to him sooner then I thought I did.
I love this... "song" (if we can call it that), since i was a child. Just for disscussing: I know it's by AT, but it appears in an Ep of NIN... Why it's that so? Did Reznor had anything to do whith the track itself? It makes no difference, I know, but, who is the author?? (Sorry my english, not native tongue)
@LivingGiant......watch Uylises 31 episode 25 "The Lotus Eaters" that could well be the machine you describe ha ha..... :D .....check the story it will not disappoint when you consider it's a kids cartoon from 1980 it's rather deep. (french & japanese what a combo!)
It's actually a pretty well known fact that Richard just sent some music he had lying around to Trent Reznor and didn't even listen to the tapes that were sent to him. He hated Nine Inch Nails but wanted the cash. If you think this is a remix of NIN, then tell me what song he's remixing? Look at the CD case: all the other songs have a remix name that links them to their original song. This does not. Plus, it sounds NOTHING like anything from Downward Spiral.
@tigeroo25 Well gee, maybe you wouldn't be getting so riled up if you weren't leaving comments containing complete lies on videos now would you? Go get educated please. I don't have the time to talk to people with nothing but gravel in their heads. Bye bye, sweetie pie :D

Can anyone tell me of any Industrial music like this? More metallic and less electronic? All I can find is computer-generated electric sutff I dont want to find.
It's a cover of a song originally performed by Coil. Arguing over whether it's a NIN or an AT song proves you know nothing of the history of industrial or electronic music.
....sorry kids...this is 100% Aphex Twin - I remember reading an article about this - Richard James owed Trent a remix for his "Further Down The Spiral" Remix and the courier was literally at the door to pick it up - Richard James handed the courier something he was working on - so no - it's not a remix of anything - sorry to burst your bubble - NIN couldn't create anything this good anyways...
Yes, Trent Reznor asked to do this track for NIN remix album, and it is done by AT, yet it is a remake of Coil track (the band that had the greatest influence on Trent Reznor and also did remixes for NIN and also was supposed to release an album on Nothing, but said NO to Trent after recording a demo and deeming it will be too commercial to them (COIL never ever released anything that seemed too comercial to them)).
This IS a remake of the Coil (UK; a great influence on Trentn Reznor/NIN) track "At The Heart Of It All" from their debute album "Scatology" 1984. Just listen to one after another in chronogical order and you will see it by yourself.
I didn't know this was originally Aphex twin. Cool to Imagine how this album came about, in the midst of the selfdestruct tour. This album is really for big NIN fans, and y'all know what i mean when i say this album is just so deeper than TDS, course TDS is way more boss than probably any other NIN album, after 9 years I can never which i like more of the discography. LONg LIVE Industrial.
Hey retards, this is a track off of Mixes for Cash. It's a "mix". Hence, it's not his original. If anyone questions the ability of James to write his own music, then they are seriously fucked in the head.
@TheCIAsucks I,v nothing to do with retards ,anyhow you are right about Mixes for Cash excuse me fore this .I was more familiar with Coil about this song.I enjoy the Burroughs readings on your channel.THX
Except four of the songs on that album (including this one) were not re-mixes. James claims never even to have heard the album that this was supposedly re-mixing. (And indeed it sounds nothing like anything off of the Downward Spiral).
@TheCIAsucks "At the Heart of It All" is an Aphex Twin track that appears on Further Down the Spiral. Along with "The Beauty of Being Numb", it is not a remixed track from The Downward Spiral like the other tracks on Further, but was created directly for the album by Aphex Twin.
Might be off of the remix for cash record, but according to multiple sources he wrote the song and Trent put it on the record. So...not a remix, I guess?
Actaully - it sounds more like the sountrack from one of the Shiya Tsukamoto TETSUO films. Anyone know if this has anything at all to do with Coil's track 'At the Heart Of It All'? off of the Scatology album?
what's great for me is this came out b4 lord of the rings(movie that is), on dark nights i would sit at the gate to mordor and listen to this.ever since the world found it fashionable though..it not as dark and quiet as it used to be.
When I first heard this off "Further Down The Spiral" back when I was 15 years old (in late 1995) I was just SPELLBOUND - and no, not in the Paula Abdul way (<--only my gen will get that double-entendre, btw). This track immediately became my stoner song, as well as "The Downward Spiral (The Bottom)" off the same album (FDTS). If it wasn't for this song on NIN's Halo 10 vols. 1 & 2, I would have NEVER stumbled across Aphex Twin!! ..Okay, no, cuz I WOULDA stumbled upon em' while raving in 96'!!
It does sound like a mixture of the two. Some of Aphex's clinking sounds from Ventolin are present, but the overall structure sounds somewhat more conventional like a NIN piece. Cool stuff. Too bad they don't collaborate more.
I does sound like a mixture of the two. Some of Aphex's clinking sounds from Ventolin are present, but the overall structure sounds somewhat more conventional like an NIN piece. Cool stuff. Too bad they don't collaborate more.
@L0rM I will admit, this did make me think of an apocalyptic scene and the NIN Remix Year Zero remix made me think of a monstrous mechanical creature with twisting gears and cogs as a body. It's amazing what images ambient sounds like this can do to one's imagination, ain't it? :D
I need to agree with both pogofied and icylic. I'm sure AFX was aware of Coil, and the track title, but this is obviously an original work, definitely not a cover or reimagining of the Coil track. Both are tremendous, why settle for one?
This song reminds me of the end of a long, bad, nightmarish acid trip then seeing a dark room with a wooden floor with several staticy TVs on it displaying names.
Wow. Dark, dark, dark like a lot of Aphex Twin's amazing music. With some songs there is a "dance" or an "acapello" version, I love how RDJ just blows your mind and creates an almost entirely new sound and song.
To me, this song makes me think of some huge twisted machine deep in the bowels of the earth forever working at an infernal forge, hammering away and building something sinister, with lava splashing and flowing all around, steam and smoke...
@pogofied Why? Coil worked with NIN on the "Fixed" EP, as well as the "Further Down the Spiral" album, which this piece is from. It's hardly inconceivable that they might be related.
Thanks to NiN for creating a medium for AT to bust out a power industrial tech track on a major label. (I should have deleted this comment) At the mofakkin heart of it all really. Is not that where it is. Fuck the distro, fuck the label. Listen, banging on tubes with oxy release is simple. There is meaning, and so deep... yet all I hear is everything. Deep peace. Everything.
When i hear this track i always imagine sun becoming a red gaint and scoruches all life on earth and will eventually comsume the plant.Imagine seeing the sun fill the sky and everthing around you melting,That what i see
I think of a world much like half life 2. A sad, broken culture overseen and overridden by a foreign, domineering, and industrialized force that will surely eradicate any past they once had.
holy shit this is awesome! it sounds like you are standing in a lonely industrial park or something, massive metal cranes sway overhead while towering chimneys spew an inky smog.
This was the first song I ever heard by Aphex Twin on the NIN Further Down The Spiral CD in 95. Then I got the Trance Europe X-Press CD compilation CD With Aphex Twin's Analogue Bubblebath 3 song on it. Been a fan ever since.
remaftp Richard D James wanted to tour with NIN and this along with another RDJ track are both on a NIN record. they aren't remixes either. so no, that rumor of him never listening to/not liking NIN is complete bollocks.
Also it was Trent's label (Nothing Records) who distributed the entire WARP catalog in America so there ya go, you learn something new every day.
Its all Aphex. Pretty sure Richard D hates NIN and that was partly his source material for his mockery of aggro goth shit in Come To Daddy (the other part is The Prodigy, natch).
This is Aphex Twin. Heard is in a interview where they were talking about RDJ and his music. I never heard anything about NIN but this is deffinately Aphex Twin.
Look at the fine print on the disc.... some of the trax are by coil and some by aphex... I like NIN, but when I noticed that "their" best trax were produced by other artists, I felt much more interested in those other artists. :D
Gonna be honest, i had a long playlist going and once when i woke up in the middle of the night it was still on and this song was going, i thought i was in a horror movie lolz
@xxverde Actually I believe that this isn't even a remix. I think it's just some stuff that he submitted as a NIN song to make money. "26 mixes for cash" it was called right?
Badass.

Is not that where it is. Fuck the distro, fuck the label. Listen, banging on tubes with oxy release is simple. There is meaning, and so deep... yet all I hear is everything. Deep peace. Everything.

So... This song owes NOTHING to the song "At The Heart of It All" by COIL?

@chronosynclastc can't argue against that! I'm sure you have heard the original, and it is a wonderfully disturbing song.

I think of a world much like half life 2. A sad, broken culture overseen and overridden by a foreign, domineering, and industrialized force that will surely eradicate any past they once had.

lol well actually this was used in the OST of a half life 1 mod :P

The 'Twin' is a God
Trent is a 'Reason'
This track is a perfect meeting of the two.

holy shit this is awesome! it sounds like you are standing in a lonely industrial park or something, massive metal cranes sway overhead while towering chimneys spew an inky smog.
a very powerful song indeed,

2muchfoya 1 year ago
anyone who thinks this is not aphex twin is a fucking moron or else has a shittily labeled mp3 and never bought the album. anyway its a classic tune!

Look at the fine print on the disc.... some of the trax are by coil and some by aphex... I like NIN, but when I noticed that "their" best trax were produced by other artists, I felt much more interested in those other artists. :D

@xxverde Actually I believe that this isn't even a remix. I think it's just some stuff that he submitted as a NIN song to make money. "26 mixes for cash" it was called right?
