Has anyone else noticed, the way he says "I love you girl" at the end... I mean, there are a thousand songs who say the words "I love you" but ive never heard anyone say it like Garfunkel. does. He sings it like he honestly, truly, heart shakily means it. He puts the meaning of the word back into it.
shrivel1, I very much agree with you on altering memory patterns by frequent aural monitoring of this song, but for me, the song is simply too magnificant not to give an occasional or at times more than occasional listen.
My daughter is named Emily and thinks this song was written to her (she's 6) but isn't it great that someone living in an age some 40 years later can still love this song as did I at her age (well maybe a bit older). Garfunkel has such a pure voice
and they both produced some of the finest folk-rock songs of the 60s-70s.
My dad, being a right violent tempered tyrant at times used to play this album when i was very young..i picked it up when i was 16-17 years old listen to it quiet alot, this was one of the ones i remeber for some reason....along with bridge over troubled water and a whole bunch of mushroom picking in september. goldendays.
Gosh, I love this song. The ending is like a cry for help/ Such beauty and poetry. Both lyrically and vocally. Simon and Garfunkel were/are amazing... so underrated.
@vistadelpasado - This is a great song. I for one prefer this live version over the studio version. But if you think about it, this song wasn't a 'hit' when it was released. If you ask me, this is one of the types of songs the 'easy listening' or 'beautiful music' SHOULD'VE been playing back in the day!
God is LOVE...and life for ever for those who believe in Jesus Christ ! What is sad about that? It's we humans who do the killing and hurting...NOT GOD !
@Fons1958 What's sad is that, by Christian law, the vast majority of people in the world will sufferer forever in eternal agony, despite the fact that they may be decent people. That a good, caring man who loves his family and looks after his community will go to hell for the simple fact that's he's a Musilm, or a Jew, or an Atheist, while the vile men of the Spanish Inquisition are quite possibly laughing in heaven right now. By your beliefs, at least...
@boldfurykeren Not everyone who names the name of Christ is of Christ. Many will say on that day "Lord, didn't we prophesy in your name, and in your name perform many miracles? Then He (Jesus) will say "I never knew you." This is hard, I know, but "decent: people really aren't when compared to God's standard. I know I'm not.
@1niftyjay God is perfect, and man is not, there's no denying that. To strive for godly perfection, or to achieve God's standard, is a foolish concept, but good people suffer by religion. The traditional view of Christian dogma would burn good men for all time. Your view is exactly the one I can never forgive: you see a 'decent' man to be one who has faith in Christ, and an unworthy man as one who doesn't. It's perverse. It's cruel. It's unforgivable.
@boldfurykeren We're all unworthy of Christ or Mary or whatever have you. Yet the heavens are kind despite our unworthiness, so long as we do not submit to it. Those who think themselves worthy (like perhaps most of the faithful nowadays) are hypocrites. Such is true religion.
@mpalardy God made man in his image – in his capacity to do good. If man, at the very height of his potential, is still unworthy of heaven, then the God that created man and created heaven in this way, for man to suffer eternally despite his goodness, is a cruel and malicious God, and not one I will honour. I reject Christ with every fibre of my being, and honestly believe Christianity to be nothing more than a misguided work of evil, and my God loves me for it, and I Him.
@boldfurykeren I think your reading of St. Augustine is somewhat off. God made man in his image, but that image is everywhere wounded through our own fallenness. Is man fundamentally good? Yes. But heaven can never be ours through our own meriting; it's neither ours to give nor receive, for such is the heresy of Pelagianism. Yet God is also merciful, and it is one His infinite mercies we rely. But who said anything about eternal suffering? Not I!
@mpalardy Who said anything about eternal suffering? Jesus did, when he proclaimed that the only way to heaven is through him! I can't possibly believe that in infinitely merciful God would deny heaven to good men and women who don't believe in Jesus.
@mpalardy And as for the 'heresy' of Pelagianism, this one of the aspects of Christianity I take most issue with. The idea that all men are born with sin, that newborns are immediately hell-bound, and that baptism is all it takes to resolve them, is laughable. The thought that God would condemn a baby unless someone has baptised it – an action that the child itself took no part in and had no opinion over – is absolutely ridiculous.
@boldfurykeren Some say that the Church has a morbid fixation with hell. However, the only morbid fixation with hell that I've ever seen has been that of the Church's despisers. Seriously, if you want a good view of the faith, read the Fathers, and don't take your cue from whatever tinpot televangelist is in vogue nowadays.
@boldfurykeren The whole thing with the babies falls under the "age of accountability" where someone becomes a conscience moral agent. Some people, like the mentally challenged or babies don't reach it. It's not strictly biblical, but I know God takes care of babies, and those with childlike minds. Don't worry.
So beautiful. So haunting and innocent. Now, somany "love" songs are crude, selfish 'doin' my 'ho', and things like that. This is just an ordinary person who's just awed and enamored at the beauty of his lover. It's a song of overwhelming thankfulness for her love for him.
@1niftyjay : "This is just an ordinary person who's just awed and enamored at the beauty of his lover. It's a song of overwhelming thankfulness for her love for him". Well stated! What a blessing it is to know exactly what it is like to awaken at night with your beautiful lover, the love of your life, still lovingly and protectively wrapped within your arms. To awaken and realize that you hold the most precious treasure in your arms. And, having her love for a lifetime could never be long enough
@chrysm6 I "How beautiful is my beloved. How beautiful. Her hair is like a flock of goats descending mount Gilead. Her eyes are doves." Read Song of Solomon. Anyone who thinks the bible has no romantic love must read it. This song always reminds me of Song of Solomon, somehow in its beauty. I thank you for your kind reply.
A beautifully written song with such heartfelt lyrics,. a song that can just tear at your heart as are so many Simon & Garfunkel's songs. Full of imagery, so lacking with today's songwrirters.. Just incredible harmonies....one of my favourite folk duos.
If people can sue Ozzy for kids committing suicide because of his songs, does anyone think i have a case against Art and Paul for turning me into a pussy during the 70's? God I love this song.
I was eleven when this came out and wore the 45 out in a day. What a wonderful song to be influenced by for all of these years since. A wonderful atmosphere created for that exact moment in time. That I think is the measure of good art.
One of the best songs ever written as well as done. Played this and sang it on Oak street beach for a girl some 30 years ago almost. Got great complements from the frisbee freaks!!! Still have the capo after several move, one foot from my right foot!!! Think I will play it.
This use to calm me down when my parents would have vicious fights, throw me into panic attacks. I felt like I was dying at only 8 and then I would listen to this song and would calm down.
@JamesTKirkCobain I totally understand where you're coming from. I would play this song, "I Am A Rock," and "The Boxer" when my dad would get drunk and go off on one of his violent rants. I had Simon & Garfunkel's Greatest Hits CD. I would play those songs and stop crying. They were my safe haven for when I had nothing else but a pillow and a blanket. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one that found this song and others to be comforting for those horrible nights.
@TheOfficialRoseEmran Finally, someone who had a simillar situation; I am a Rock helped me cope with my depression from my mom(who got drunk) and I's fighting.
its hard to think of artists that write such beautiful songs, with such heartfelt lyrics when you think of todays garbage, or at least most of it is garbage, some people still write their own songs but its rare, especially with mainstream music, Paul and Art were trulely gifted artists, their music will live on forever, it is timeless.
Yes, Paul Simon was a great song writer. But Garfunkel's vocals were masterful. He begins a note softly and ends with his full voice.Takes skill, strength, control, artistry. I loved Simon with Garfunkel and as a solo act. Suppose I can't say the same about Garfunkel. However, its impossible and unfair to dismiss Garfunkel' contribution to the duo. Also, these particular lyrics are a little sappy, and I think Garfunel's the one that makes this song great.
The fact that all those tunes came from just ONE man... keeps Paul Simon from being compared to ""The Beatles". (But, he DID get a little help from his friend!)
I loved and listened to them both... bought the albums and singles... and just enjoyed being young and having such great music to choose from!
I don't know if there should really be an argument about who was the better songwriters. All I know is that Paul Simon did it by himself. He didn't have a co-writer. To me, when the Paul and John broke up, the creativity was never the same. Again, the fact that Paul Simon did the writing on his own is a tremendous accomplishment.
When this song came on over my headphones in 1968 I got chills. Not cold ones--it was as if all the cold around me fractured and I realized how beautiful life could be. Sounds dramatic now, but I was a teenager and that's how it took me; I was transported into a world so wondrous it seemed unreal. Now, I am just so very happy to be reminded of a gloriously beautiful song. Thank you S & G
bridge over troubled water is my album of life i know it word for word as i proved to my wife 15 years ago when i sang this to her at our wedding it touches so many nerves with me its allways a plesure to listen to allways thanks for posting
@BARMYPANTS what do you mean by that, simon and garfunkel have been freinds since grade school, they have there disagreements, but they are still freinds to this day.
What I imagine is this song makes me feel I am walking in a small New England town with church spires and snow on cobble stones and small alley's wonderfully written.
such a beautiful heartfelt song...all the comments are sad though...people ruin religion...bottom line...I was a soldier for 9yrs, been to alot of hate filled country with many different religions and it's not the books or the beliefs, it's always the people...very sad to see all the comments...
amber91w, In 1968 I was a teenager and very bitter. When I heard this song for the first time, I thought something like: "No it's not possible, the other people of my age are way too cynical and jaded to like this song." But I was completely wrong, I found that over the months ithat followed, nearly everyone was listening to it.
@amber91w I traveled for the better part of 15 years in Europe, befriended many people of many cultures and found the same thing, "IT"S THE PEOPLE. This is a beautifulk song, a mental trip through the night in a fairyland of color and emotion - take it at face value and close your eyes and walk through the night..............................
Funny how "Emily" songs are some of the prettiest around. There's just "Emily" a jazz tune with a great version by Bill Evans. Then "See Emily Play" by Pink Floyd on their first album. And then of course this version by S & G.
Wonderful haunting song...I can see the frost rising through the air into a sunset over a snowy field. Beautiful Paul Simon lyrics. Art Garfunkel best male high voice ever (Cat Stevens/Yusuf..best deep voice..though not on this song, of course!) In my opinion.
Thiaanthony, what a God-Thing, you mentioning Art Garfunkel and Cat Stevens in same sentence, as I'd just asked on another video if anyone else played both Tea for Tillerman & Emily over & over as teen, like me!
You love winter? WHAT a combo: beautiful girl & frosted fields...If you would, read C.S. Lewis, "Surprised by Joy"--He boiled down longing in this song as not being able to be met by a mere person (Art G. had apparently given up?), only by God; & called it "Northern-ness" I believe.
Oops- Thumbs up on your comment, Tiaanthony. I hit wrong hand! Someone will fix it, though! Did you like other Crescendo type song, Tea for the Tillerman, re: Cat Stevens? In that song, not male female love, but children are the beautiful subject.
In the Hound of Heaven, the innocence of children became an object as powerful as love, which protagonist chased until God caught him, and showed him what real love and the source of his longing was...
Ednor, I love everything Yusuf(aka Cat Stevens) has written, and sung. He is a pacifist, and just lovely, really. Best to go to his website..Yusuf / Cat Stevens, if you want answers to questions about him. Best Wishes, Thia.
I have trouble calling him by his new name, but again, I'm old enough to remember Muhammed Ali's previous name, and the big splash he made changing it during the black-power days, on TV. But anyway, there is sort of a disturbing You Tube interview of Yusef / Cat in Britain, in which he says he'd attend the BURNING of Salmon Rushdie, but not a mere "in effigy" burning of him! Maybe not the language of pacifism? But I have felt he went from looking for a hard HEADED woman, to a hard HEARTED Allah
I will go to (Cat Steven's / Yusef) website , but I have some knowledge of the Islamic religion, and some concerns: Unlike w/ Christ, who treated women with an equality unheard of in his day, women are degraded, faces not allowed to see sun, stoned., in Islam, subject to honor killings, being made child brides, etc., and I feel that the rush to political correctness forgets that Gods Son, Christ, DIED that we might go to heaven, Islam offers heaven to those who die KILLING their enemy's sons..
Yes, I understand all this, but I was just talking about Yusuf (aka Cat Stevens). Just believe in God, myself, seems more direct somehow. But when you know someone always had good intentions, a warm heart, gentle ,full of love , beautiful words, and stories, and just wanted to find his soul, then you tend to be on their side. As for Islam, the religion, then I still have an open mind, as I know ordinary muslims regard the Taliban, etc., as criminals. Yusuf always cared about womens rights.
I was raised a Christian, and its fairly obvious that you have either not read, or chosen to ignore the parts of the Christian Bible which state women must cover their head & also where a rapist may 'compensate' the father of the rape victim by offering to pay for the violation & take her as his wife. There is fucked up shit in all of those religions, not just Islam. It does not even nearly corner the market.
Goldhelmriel - That makes me sick. I think I might actually start my own Bible study group that focuses on passages like that; those that prove the hypocrisy of the church and include concepts that would be atrocities today. I can't believe some people think the Bible should be taken literally.
Anytime a person or persons take a book literally, and live or take their concept of morality solely by such a book, are bound to get into trouble. If anyone were to take any religious book literally & live by it word for word, without using their own conscience, it would likely lead to tragedy. Those books are good as guides or blueprints, but not word-for-word instructions to live by. Bringing it back to the original point, no one religion has all the answers for what is good or evil.
It's a wonderful song. It have became my favourite when I first heard it. It reminds me of my sister. Her name is Emily & whenever I hear this song, I think of her. I've became more protective and it's so emotional song.
The last verse ruins the song.
Shame

its hard to think of artists that write such beautiful songs, with such heartfelt lyrics when you think of todays garbage, or at least most of it is garbage, some people still write their own songs but its rare, especially with mainstream music, Paul and Art were trulely gifted artists, their music will live on forever, it is timeless.
JEFFMM71 1 year ago 3
Yes, Paul Simon was a great song writer. But Garfunkel's vocals were masterful. He begins a note softly and ends with his full voice.Takes skill, strength, control, artistry. I loved Simon with Garfunkel and as a solo act. Suppose I can't say the same about Garfunkel. However, its impossible and unfair to dismiss Garfunkel' contribution to the duo. Also, these particular lyrics are a little sappy, and I think Garfunel's the one that makes this song great.

Art Garfunkel has such a magical, gorgeous voice. I hope his current vocal problems get better soon, poor guy.
datalal624 1 year ago 2
The fact that all those tunes came from just ONE man... keeps Paul Simon from being compared to ""The Beatles". (But, he DID get a little help from his friend!)
I loved and listened to them both... bought the albums and singles... and just enjoyed being young and having such great music to choose from!
And, we still do.

Thank you S & G

such a beautiful heartfelt song...all the comments are sad though...people ruin religion...bottom line...I was a soldier for 9yrs, been to alot of hate filled country with many different religions and it's not the books or the beliefs, it's always the people...very sad to see all the comments...

amber91w, In 1968 I was a teenager and very bitter.

This is a beautifulk song, a mental trip through the night in a fairyland of color and emotion - take it at face value and close your eyes and walk through the night..............................
montgomerynw 9 months ago
@amber91w It IS the books and beliefs, that is how people define themselves. We are left with what comes out of those definitions.

Peter Cetera is awesome, too.
iqfrenzy 2 years ago
Thiaanthony, what a God-Thing, you mentioning Art Garfunkel and Cat Stevens in same sentence, as I'd just asked on another video if anyone else played both Tea for Tillerman & Emily over & over as teen, like me!
You love winter? WHAT a combo: beautiful girl & frosted fields...If you would, read C.S. Lewis, "Surprised by Joy"--He boiled down longing in this song as not being able to be met by a mere person (Art G. had apparently given up?), only by God; & called it "Northern-ness" I believe.
ednorandrewrowe 2 years ago

Best Wishes, Thia.
thiaanthony 2 years ago
I have trouble calling him by his new name, but again, I'm old enough to remember Muhammed Ali's previous name, and the big splash he made changing it during the black-power days, on TV. But anyway, there is sort of a disturbing You Tube interview of Yusef / Cat in Britain, in which he says he'd attend the BURNING of Salmon Rushdie, but not a mere "in effigy" burning of him! Maybe not the language of pacifism? But I have felt he went from looking for a hard HEADED woman, to a hard HEARTED Allah
ednorandrewrowe 2 years ago
I will go to (Cat Steven's / Yusef) website , but I have some knowledge of the Islamic religion, and some concerns: Unlike w/ Christ, who treated women with an equality unheard of in his day, women are degraded, faces not allowed to see sun, stoned., in Islam, subject to honor killings, being made child brides, etc., and I feel that the rush to political correctness forgets that Gods Son, Christ, DIED that we might go to heaven, Islam offers heaven to those who die KILLING their enemy's sons..
ednorandrewrowe 2 years ago
Yes, I understand all this, but I was just talking about Yusuf (aka Cat Stevens). Just believe in God, myself, seems more direct somehow. But when you know someone always had good intentions, a warm heart, gentle ,full of love , beautiful words, and stories, and just wanted to find his soul, then you tend to be on their side. As for Islam, the religion, then I still have an open mind, as I know ordinary muslims regard the Taliban, etc., as criminals. Yusuf always cared about womens rights.
thiaanthony 2 years ago
I was raised a Christian, and its fairly obvious that you have either not read, or chosen to ignore the parts of the Christian Bible which state women must cover their head & also where a rapist may 'compensate' the father of the rape victim by offering to pay for the violation & take her as his wife. There is fucked up shit in all of those religions, not just Islam. It does not even nearly corner the market.
Goldhelmriel 2 years ago
Goldhelmriel - That makes me sick. I think I might actually start my own Bible study group that focuses on passages like that; those that prove the hypocrisy of the church and include concepts that would be atrocities today. I can't believe some people think the Bible should be taken literally.

lovelyisntit 2 years ago
Anytime a person or persons take a book literally, and live or take their concept of morality solely by such a book, are bound to get into trouble. If anyone were to take any religious book literally & live by it word for word, without using their own conscience, it would likely lead to tragedy. Those books are good as guides or blueprints, but not word-for-word instructions to live by. Bringing it back to the original point, no one religion has all the answers for what is good or evil.
