@merakhagen : The Taliban Government was defeated in the beginning of the war, and the US already has "control" of the country; not literally, since the Afghans are still in charge. The Taliban are not winning strategically or otherwise, but their only good point is that they are just an organization based, not in a country, yet an ideal; so they can continually exist. That being said, they just need to hold out for the political battle back home to cause the US withdrawal; similar to Vietnam.
@gladifly : Doubtful, especially since the Afghans have been helping the US fight against the Taliban and other insurgents since the beginning. Plus, the US isn't leaving until it is sure that the Afghan Army is able to properly secure their country.

In fact, I'd say the opposite for them, the media seems more against the war, but has cooled down since the US has made plans to withdrawal. NATO has secured Afghan, but the insurgencies are the only problem; they can come from anywhere and anyone. Again, I'm sure the Afghan Army will be able to do their job, if they put themselves into.
I'm just more optimistic about their future, so we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

To understand why the taxes were such a contentious issue, you have to look at how hard the colonists had worked to establish what they had. @merakhagen : The Taliban Government was defeated in the beginning of the war, and the US already has "control" of the country; not literally, since the Afghans are still in charge. The Taliban are not winning strategically or otherwise, but their only good point is that they are just an organization based, not in a country, yet an ideal; so they can continually exist. That being said, they just need to hold out for the political battle back home to cause the US withdrawal; similar to Vietnam.

In fact, I'd say the opposite for them, the media seems more against the war, but has cooled down since the US has made plans to withdrawal. NATO has secured Afghan, but the insurgencies are the only problem; they can come from anywhere and anyone. Again, I'm sure the Afghan Army will be able to do their job, if they put themselves into.
I'm just more optimistic about their future, so we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

And the British Empire was in its autmn days by the time it invaded Afghanistan and was already far too stretched out as it was. Britain came out of their salutary neglect and decided that the colonists would love to pay up numerous taxes they didnt have before, ofcourse there was going to be resentment; if that happened today too, and the ruler was an enitre ocean away, i'd feel the need to rebel and claim freedom as well

To understand why the taxes were such a contentious issue, you have to look at how hard the colonists had worked to establish what they had. Settlers in places such as Jamestown had to endure horrendous tribulations with little or no concern from their compatriots in Britain. Little wonder they were so angry when, after years of hardship were finally bearing fruit, they were hit with such demands.
