  • planning on saving enough to come to portland one day when the kids are old enough and ride a bike around your town. looks like a lovely place from what i have seen. must have brakes but can still smoke? consistancy please!

  • retarded. track bikes are meant to be raced, not posed with. stupid hipster fags.

  • @johnnytuups Better call the whaaaambulance!!

  • This is fucking stupid!

  • Fucking Oregonians, I'm so glad I was born in that state.

  • 0:51 wtf is he doing

  • you think they would take this a little more seriously, then what they did.. the 2 police (whatever they where) probably thought they where a bunch of dumb shits

  • how is this safer than using your legs? it worked effictivly maybe like 5 times

  • I'm selling brake sticks for $16.00 hit mu up!! all colors!! invisible paint + $8.00

  • can it broke the spokes ?

  • nah im not buying it...dont really see the harm in having an alternative break when needed

  • the law in California requires that your bike must have brakes that can make your bike skid to a stop. Perfect bike for that.......Fixed Gear ;]

  • ahaha "speak softly and carry a big stick" -roosevelt

  • 0:39 hahaha whatttttttt?????

  • soul brakes bro! :D

  • Lol, the guy with the dead ass Christmas tree. Epic yo!

  • OMG LOL at the guy at 0:38! Bigger stick = stop faster, right??

  • That guys hair is awesome...

  • I know im a noob and i lose self respect for asking this but ... i was wonderin if you can help me with my fixie .. cause i know how to skid (leaning foward) but i cannot ever lift up my foot and put the other one down and stop like that ... the bike shop said something about the teeth .. theres too much or something ? How many teeth do i need ?

  • @RockyShitNigga probly too high of a ratio between crank chainring and your cog in the rear.... look it up (google/wikipedia) you want a ratio between 2.4-3.0 i think... lower will be easier to stop

  • @wounsel lol .. sound like a noob again , but i was wondering what type should i get.. where do you buy gear ratio of 3.0 or 2.4 w/e .. ?

  • I'm a bike tech and these fixies, are beyond me. Why would anyone want those cranks spinning constantly. if you manage to stop the cranks and stay on the bike you're more then likely skidding and destroying the rubber. I just don't get it, seems weird.

  • @Spiegel420 all you gotta know is that it is what it is and let it be...

  • @red88alert ok, I seen this crazy fixie rider at seattles folk life, shredding the fountain. It was pretty cool.

  • shame on portland! i thought they were a bike friendly state. a stick? carry the stick only to beat ignorant fucks.

  • personally my cable brakes have fucked me over before, the front tire brakes cable got locked so the wheel stopped moving tossing me over my handlebars. I'd rather just rely on my own skill to stop now.

  • i dont understand the concept of not having a brake, wtf, it saves lives.

the only thing i can think of why people choose not to have it is like a "dare" or a "show off".

i don't have anything against having brakes or not, i just think safety should come first

having the brake cables does make a fixie look crappy, its why its a fixie, defeats the purpose huh?

  • It's not so much about looks or weight as it is about control and feel. When I ride a fixie I feel more connected to the road. Besides, braking with your chain is just as effective as using brake pads if you know how to do it. Also, brake pads tend to skid a bit when the rim sidewalls get wet.

  • @flyunzipped bike without brakes is called a track bike..ppl ride without brakes in the street cuz they have skillz and gutz...some ppl can stop faster on a fixed gear then a bike with brakes...what would happen if your brake cables pop and you cant stop..we dont have to deal with that cuz whatever you legs does you bike just follow..

  • @flyunzipped

It's all just a superior complex and an image thing, on public roads having a brake would not hinder the performance of the bike at all, but it's just these fixed gear elitists would feel less superior if their bikes were more like the rest of us who clearly aren't half as cool because we have *gasp* brakes.

  • Rest assured I feel superior though I have a front brake and my fixie is a citybike conversion with fenders looking pretty much like any other bike. :)

Having said that, I have to say that I sure didn't like my front brake one afternoon when I pulled it in the dark and wet leaves were all over the road. My front wheel skidded and I crashed hard. It made me reconsider how safe the front brake really is compared to the "fixed gear brake".

  • wtf is this serious? jamming a stick in the spoke will ruin the wheel.

  • @BurningTirez you didn't read the thing on the right, did you?

  • How could anyone take you seriously with hair like that...

  • 2:00 I fucken lul'd

  • I got pulled over by a cop in Boston for riding brakeless. Luckily, there's no brake rule here...yet. But I still had to demonstrate multiple stops for him until he was satisfied. Completely unwarranted. If he saw me carrying a stick there would have been no problem!

  • Mmm, I'm not sure that's entirely correct... Mass law requires bicycles be equipped with a brake that allows the cyclist to stop in x # of feet on dry pavement. By my understanding there's never been a ruling in Mass as to what "being equipped with a brake" means exactly.

That said... admittedly I don't run a brake.

  • Hmm, yeah you are correct. Thanks for the info. The stopping distance is 30 ft. at 15mph, which to me seems very generous and pretty easily attainable. Mass law requires a "braking system." It might be a tough case to argue for the chain as a braking SYSTEM, despite its reliability and effectiveness. Anyway, thanks for the heads up. Ride safe!

  • @jimmymook6 But I still had to demonstrate multiple stops for him until he was satisfied. Completely unwarranted

Then you shouldnt have done it for him. Legally you are not forced to even tell a cop your name without a warrent

  • htdtr,

That's true, I didn't have to. But I'd much rather prove something to show the cop he was wrong rather than run away from the situation and make it look like I didn't know what I was doing and was a reckless rider. I'd prefer him to see the results and be more tolerant in the future, so other riders can go on their merry way.

  • So I have to carry a stick when I ride brakeless in PDX?

  • over where i live they are starting to force us to have hand brakes as well cuz alot of kids are racing or trying to smash and cant stop in time before an intersection

  • and those are the people who ruin it for the rest of us.

  • 1:49 excellent endo

  • shouldn't beach cruisers with no hand brakes be the savior of "brakeless" fixies? i mean, a coaster brake is still a completely chain-dependent braking method...

  • Good point

  • thats so dumb what kind of biker is going to seriously reach for a stick every time he has to stop

  • I think you meant fucktard, dipstick.

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! now that was funny!

  • keep sticking it to the man!

    pun intended.

    =)

  • I think we can all unite in the fact that cops are dicks.

  • @Drucifer24 those ones looked nice actually, not giving tickets for no breaks etc... seems damn nice to me!

  • You all need to lighten up...do you really think they filmed this with the intention of becoming an olympic sport. chill out mofo's! But the comments are hilarious hearing you all get fired up about this. REALLY hilarious!!!! The guy going over the handle bas was awesome!!!

  • Wow this is dumb I don't give a damn about whether a bike has brakes or not but for everyone to raise a stink about a law in this manner almost proves that beyond the shadow of a doubt that most FG riders ride brakeless out of a social reaction to riding brakeless. I ride a FG occasionally but I keep at least a front brake on not out of my safety but out of everyone else's. Fuck what everyone else thinks.

  • No you do not, because eventually you left the message here. Pathetically you do care bummer

  • bahaha, funny what some people did, pfft sole brakes..hehe

  • this is bull shit

  • must trust the soul brakes.

  • if it was cool to stop with a stick, hipsters around the globe would be carrying sticks with them. that's what i got out of this video. thank you.

  • You got that right. Of course, it takes a hipster to see that.

  • word.

  • word

  • 1:34 is the only one that makes sense

  • that seems pretty difficult /:

    it's seems valuable though

especially if your brake broke/couldnt skid to a stop in time

but how often does that happen?

anyway, seems pretty cool. shit happens, but it's nice when it brings people together.

  • Please elaborate who this comment is directed towards?

The only possible jobless and lifeless person here is you sitting behind a monitor who has nothing else to do but search youtube for fixed gear "hipsters" to make fun of.

  • i dont know what you portland folks problem is. Stick stopping is the only way to stop in Seattle....

  • It's all those soap box derby cars.

  • Stupid

  • Stupid comment.

  • Stupid stupid.

  • Ah, a much more nuanced argument. Now I understand.

  • yes it takes time and practice i fell the first time i tryed haha its so hard

  • Question: Is it hard to ride a fixed gear bike when it comes to braking?

  • Yes.

  • "Is it hard to ride a fixed gear bike when it comes to braking?"

No, just pull on the little lever on the handlebars.

If for some reason your fixie doesn't have one of those the answer is . . . no, the same thing that makes it go makes it stop. If you can make it go, you can make it stop; and just as easily.

The question is wrongly formed, because the issue isn't whether you can brake, or how hard it is to brake, but how LONG it takes to bring the bike to a stop.

  • Bear in mind that the issue being addressed by this video is whether a fixie without a breaking system independent of the drive system meets the LEGAL DEFINITION of a bicycle brake.

The answer to that is; yes.

That however does not preclude a judge from being:

    a)Ignorant

    b)A moron

c)Unwilling to admit he was wrong

    d)All of the above

  • However, that does not imply that a particular rider is not:

    a)Ignorant

    b)A moron

c)Unwilling to admit he doesn't know how to operate his bike

    d)All of the above

If you can't stop your bike with your feet; get a damn front brake; it's not a macho contest, it's about control.

And a bike with a front brake WILL always stop quicker than a bike without one (I canna change the laws of physics), if that issue is important to you, but that issue isn't relevant to this video.

  • ". . .a fixie without a breaking system. . ."

I can't believe I just typed that. No more FGG for me, it's eating my brain.

  • mommys in the back cuttin onions

daddys out back with old hank

talkin about the lazers and bunions

    talkin disability rank

no we didn't have that much money

just enough to make the dead ends meet

  • the law in the uk is to have a front brake. i dont have one, but i dont get caught. if you ride with no brakes and get caught you probly shouldnt be riding with no brakes. and if you have no brakes and get caught dont cry about it. its the law and you knew it. suck it up.

  • It's actually not the law in Oregon. The law states that a bicycle must have a device that can bring it to a skidding stop on dry pavement. A fixed gear meets that requirement.

  • haha...that's some corny shit.

  • A stick between your spokes... Does this judge want all fix-riders dead? And the tree idea was priceless.

  • A stick between your spokes... Does this judge want all fix-riders dead? And the tree idea was priceless.

  • all ur bikes suck ass

  • all yur bike belong to us

  • do they all have a death wish?

    or pure stupidity?

  • Agreed.

The FGed bikes with no brakes trend is stupid, and that guy at the end of the video is delusional if he thinks using his shoe soles is a reliable way to stop quickly.

Hand brakes should be a must on any road going bike by law; at the very least, a front brake.

Track bikes belong on the velodrome. Not the street.

  • Since you are so obviously outraged you outta come to Oregon and change the law.

  • And you think stopping with a tree is reliable?

  • hell yeah.

  • hhhhhhhhhha

  • Get a front brake.

  • Dont ride to pose. Theres really no good reason not to have a brake if it's going to save your ass

  • I started riding a fixie with a brake.

After about 4 months, I noticed I havent used it in a very long time.

I broke it and didnt replace it and I havent needed one since.

  • I'm also a Portland biker, have been for many years, but I am no fan of the fixed gears with no brakes thing. First off, I see it mostly as a fad, done mostly by new Portland hipsters, really ,having no brakes is just not very bright. I don't care what it does to your image as a fixed gear biker, and just because you can do some fancy skid stop or some other method dosen't mean every other fixed gear biker can, many people I see riding fixed gears are not in that much control of their braking.

  • yawn

  • I love the slow down retard sound bit at 1:58. Orig.

  • Put on a front brake and then get over yourselves.

  • I have a front break on my fixie for safety sake, but I don't think it should be required.

  • lamers

  • oh... sorry..... i think i need more beer.

  • It's not posing, jackass. It has to do with a jodge telling a messenger that she HAD to have brakes. She rides fixie and he can't comprehend how she stops. He said the line about the stick and using it to stop.

I'd be afraid to even try it. Stick + spokes = no front teeth. Someone needs to give that Judge a fixie for a week. Maybe then he'd understand.

  • I wasn't talking to you, dude. i was talking to "fuck brakes. fg's with breaks are weak".

  • yeah! I'm workin on a fixed gear car with no breaks.

    fuckin flintstone morons!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • pose harder

  • thats pretty damned funny!!

  • Soul breaks?

  • Sole Brakes.

  • Sarcastic Humor.

  • SOLE BRAKES...Moz..Deff..i like riding singlespeed w/ no brakes..not fixed...bmx free wheeling foot in the fork or on the tire

  • That's just ridiculous. And pretty stupid.

  • It's bullshit but hell. Put a caliper on your fork and a lever. Make the fuz happy, doesn't mean you use the brake.

It beats the fines, plus the court never told us to "USE" the brake! We just need to have one.

  • Word to your mothers. Gratz on being badass. Fixie ftw.

  • hilario

  • that was hilarious.

  • But how do I u-lock my stick?

  • The tree was some great sarcasm.
