dell and hp don't make their own parts. they call up manufacturers like asus/foxconn/ecs/msi and tell them to make basic microatx boards for them. most oems use standard atx psus today, but in the past they were often proprietary.

what matters most in a computer brand is customer service. parts are more or less equal.
