  • wow, sounds like a good book...um....(looks around innocently) heh

  • For an atheist scripture, read the writings of the philosopher Epicurus (especially 'the Principal Doctrines'), or the Dhammapada by Buddha.

  • @saadaya This book includes philosophies from those books as well.

  • @saadaya Is that The Lotus Sutra (a collection of sutras from Buddha, revealing that particular Buddha to be just another in a long line of Buddhas)? That's a good text.

Another is "The Evolving Self" by Czikszentmihalyi (the same guy that wrote "FLOW").

What I think tecnoblix is looking-for is a 'church' (safety-net of helpful people) without 'religion' (a word rooted in Latin meaning "read again," a practice which--if used on the Bible--would show him that its message IS NOT "kill people.")

  • that we survived thru 10,000 yrs of ice ages is tantamount proof of this. unfortunately our ancestors though being capable of understanding, were very afraid of the unknown & lacking the knowledge we posses today.

  • the (few) points i heard him give as positive were things that begun in our ancestral secular nature to begin with. science believes we learned altruism, compassion, community awareness & all other positive (as well as negative) social aspects from well before the 1st ice ages as there couldn't have been any type of early homo sapiens migrations w/o them. these traits are hard wired into all of us from the time our hunter/gatherer ancestors took their 1st steps to populate this planet.

  • where to begin, sorry to say i couldn't even sit through 6mins of that talk. the idea of an itellectual community is inspiring but i thought we were already working towards that goal by trying to expand the awareness through the internet. it was more the "let's take the good points of religion & refuse the bad" ideology that i find disturbing. as if morality was in the sole dominion of religious faith.

  • @d00m0racl3 I can understand that sentiment, but I actually see it as an opposition to the Bible. This book attempts to be a kind of moral guide WITHOUT God. A guide by and for humanity without laying down rules set in stone. Also, it's a great way to get introduced to the writings of some of the great philosophers without having to dredge through their dusty tomes. It's a nice compilation.

  • @tecnoblix oops i see now i didnt make it clear which video i was refering to, i meant the aethism 2.0 TED talk by alain de botton, the fora talk about the good book is still loading (i got a crappy isp & no posibility of change >.<)

yes i too believe we of the reality based persuasion need more frames of referance based on exactly these terms. i'll definately try 2get my hands on a copy since as u well note having such a gr8 collection ez access format is imperative to us all, cheers :)

  • Excellent! I watched the same TED talks and at first I had a negative response to it but I heard him out, and over all I thought it was interesting. This is the first bit of feedback I've seen from anyone on here, so thanks for sharing your findings. I think I'll actually take the time to check out that book. =)

  • @Robobubbacunta I just think it's about time we (Atheists) had a reference book to point to that compiles many of the secular words of wisdom without the batshit crazy stuff of the Bible. What we, as humans, have deduced about the meaning and the act of life. I hope it's as good all the way through as it has started out.
