@Kiwigrunt we didnt have any problems with the Dragon, my unit shot a lot of them back in the 90s and they were easy and realiable.I shot one and as long as you kept the target in the crosshairs it would hit, every time. Its not "modern" but it was fucking really good back in its day. The Soviet Sagger missle was ALOT harder to use and alot heavier. I heard that scoring a hit with a Sagger was tough as hell. The Dragon was easy.

"fire and forget" was a long way off at this time and a constant thrust motor would have burned the control wire off, so the missle had to be slowed down alot so the gunner had time to track the missle to the target. It worked and it had a 85% hit rate for a first time shooter at 500M and closer. The sagger had a Minimum range of 500M, it couldnt hit anything closer than that. and it was fucking nearly impossible for a first time user to hit with. You can google "sagger" and see

I've fired this weapon, the main problem is the wire guiding system. It has a gold iwre coiled up behind the missle. The sight apature send electronic signals down this wire and steers the missle with dozens of little jets on all sides. It follows the crosshairs, so you literally have to follow the tank with the sight. So the problem is that the wire is only 1k meters long.At 1k meters, you lose controll. Not to mention, while you are sitting there, the tank can simply blow your ass away.

@James1toknow Not sure if anybody answered your question but no. The Marines no longer use these. I was a 0352/0351 and they were getting rid of all the Dragon systems and replacing them with the Javelin. A SUPER expensive missile. The dragon was even in the early 90's a dead technology. Sit upright and wait 10 seconds or so for the missile to travel 1200 meters! thats 9.5 seconds longer than the gunner lived.

I was a Dragon gunner in West Germany from 1981-83. That made me an 11Bc. That was the worst anti-tank weapon ever made. The gunner had to sit in the wide open and the target had to be damn near still, with nothing between the target and the weapon,(trees, hills). I hated that thing. Okay...there's my two cents worth.

I used to work on these as well as the TOW systems. Both have been around since Vietnam. I believe they have retired the Dragon in favor of the Javelin, but the TOW is still in use.

When I was in the service, they used them on Cobra helicopters, ground launched off a tripod, mounted to jeeps and also on ITV Improved TOW Vehicle. The ITV had a turret which held two missiles and the gunner sat inside the armored vehicle and controlled the motorized turret. I am not sure which systems are still around. I believe the Marines still use the Cobra.

I trained on this weapon... the Dragon and the Dragon II... I hated it. It would take 11 seconds reach max range... and only 4 seconds for that enemy tank to traverse the turret and machinegun you to death. Heavy, unreliable, with a huge launch signature. It was suicide.

I spoke with a Marine back in 1990 about firing these things. He mentioned that with the missle's slowness and "loud" visual signature of the thing firing, it was the SOP in his unit to set up a number of counter-explosions (grenade, C-4, anything) during a shoot. The hope was to mislead opponents as to where to direct their machine guns at. I'm fascinated by the Dragon's propulsion system but I'm glad for the Marine's sake that these got replaced.

I fired one back in 81, trained alot with the laser training rounds before that, even the inert rounds were expensive so we only got to fire one each. I hit my target and got a three day weekend. They do have recoil and there's a flash of intense heat for a milli-second. The round dances all around in your site so it's a little hard to keep the cross hair on the target and not follow the round. Firing the Dragon is one of my coolest memories.
