The Japanese certainly show some weird shit in their theatres. I think even the Shenmue film that they bundled with the Xbox version of Shenmue 2 got a Theatrical release in Japan.
Yeah I remember this haha, I still have the VHS from when I was growing up. I actually liked it honestly because it was very early anime and as said, did seem like it inspired later games in some way, plus if I recall Luigi's outfit color scheme was used in the SSB series, though I haven't played it in awhile.
Cool, I didn't even know this movie existed. Nice review, seems you gave the flick a fair shake.
Hearing Lakitu reminds me of when I was about 9 my sis and I would play Super Mario Bros. together (as lame as it sounds, it was kind of a bonding experience for us). We had this goofy parody of Rocket 2 U by the Jets where we would sing "Baby I can Lakitu you..." (try to get that out of your head now!)
tl:dr, To this day I can't hear Lakitu without hearing "I can Lakitu you" in my head.
I checked this movie out on You Tube, and I was surprised at how many things in this movie seem to be referenced in later Mario games too. The one scene where Mario is running thru gears in Bowser's castle looked to me like it inspired the running gear obstacles in the World 1 castle in New Super Mario Bros Wii.
Aw man, I've been thinking about doing a feature about game-based film and animation for a while. Oh well, best leave the venture in experienced hands.
But only theatrically? So no Mega Man movie? I would SO love to hear you critique it because it's, well...GOOD.

As popular as mario is, you'd think they would have released it in america.Even if it was 1986
