I married Paul Deerburge's grandaughter, he did the 1st flight across the Atlantic Ocean in the Focke Wulf Condor in 1933, it took them over 29hrs to fly from Berlin to New York.
We have some really interesting pictures from news reporters from back then. Hitler made this his personal plane for traveling around Europe.
Be sure that the photos or copies of them are saved, digitized, and provided to historians or authors. As veterans pass on, rare photos, 8mm films, and history are being lost as family members clean out forgotten boxes and footlockers. Sometimes it just gets thrown away.
@FiveCentsPlease Tanx 5centz, about 90% of dem r documented from Berlin News paper reporterz n New York City reporters. Also have picz of him in India and Japan wey other planes. We have pics of him with the Emporior of Japan, Nazi Generals n Navy officers, He also did the 1zt flight off a battle ship, dey basically sling shot the plane off da side of the ship n away he went, wey b4 air craft carriers. Brave man.

the overall issue with Germany's armament industry as that they had developed a majority of their weapons in peacetime, without the pressure for speed of a War scenario. this, combined with their lack of Assembly-line production like in the US, made their weapons higher quality, but also more difficult to procure and repair. the Condor is an example: developed as an airliner, when she was loaded down with military equipment she was prone to breaking up on landing.
@Yinshaman the problem of the German Luftwaffe was not so much Lack of 4-engined bombers (the Condor, the Ju-290, the HE-177) as the fact that Hitler never wanted a Strategic Bomber force like USAAF or the RAF. he was focused on Ground Support and shock attacks, which the He-111 and Do-17 were good at, as long as Germany had superiority in the air. when this was lost, the bombers as a whole became mincemeat for allied fighters.
When the plane was demonstrated in Ålborg to the Danish airlinecompagny (DDL) the German testpilot looped the plane TWICE. I have seen the pictures. "Dania" who was stranded in England during the was was NOT used by the Brits allthough it WAS re-painted. It was test-flown a couple of times and destroyed beyond repair in a non fatal take-off accident.
The Fw200 WAS NOT to be used in North Atlantic routes. Ut was a direct request from E. Milch, DLH Technical Director to K. Tank. Chief Designer of Fock-Wulf. The first lines of Fw200 were drawn in a napkin in a cafe in a train station. E. Milch request a plane capable to cross the South Atlantic between Dakar- Senegal - e Natal - Brazil - and fly over the Andes, so this from where the names comes, after the big bird that flies high over those mountain.
el Kondor si no me equivocó se utilizo mayormente en el atlantico para la deteccion y posterior destruccion de convoyes aliados auxiliando eficazmente a los u boat como todas las piezas del engranaje aleman era realmente un poderoso y excelente avion.
It really is a beautiful aircraft and i wish that they had some still around. But unfortunately there are none left except one that was found in a lake i think.....badly damaged of course
The FW was a phantastic leight weight aircraft using the todays light weight technologies. However as due its light structure, it was mainly used as long range Submarine and Marine Bomber, carrying no more than 500 kg of explosive which is very little for such massive aircraft, knowing that its payload is several tons. There is currently a FW 200 under restauration btw.. may on display in Germany in 2014

However as due its light structure, it was mainly used as long range Submarine and Marine Bomber, carrying no more than 500 kg of explosive which is very little for such massive aircraft, knowing that its payload is several tons
This flight was so sucessful, that even Lindbergh was interested to buy the FW 200 for his Airline, however Hitler didnt allowed Focke Wulf to sell any of their Airliners to anyone abroad since it was months short before the break out of the WWII. However, Tank, the chief designer of Focke Wulf managed a deal with Lindbergh who visited Germany that time frequently. He sold him blue prints. The results of this blue prints do we know today as DC 4.
The Focke Wulf 200 was actually not designed as Bomber aircraft, it was designed as Airliner. The Design of this aircraft was following a order by Lufthansa to design a long range transatlantic aircraft capable to move more then 20 passengers non stop from Berlin to New York. The FW 200 designed by Wilhelm Tank was in competition to the similar looking Junkers 90 and was winning the competition between this two companies by performing a transatlantic non stop flight in 1939 from Ber to JFK
A useless wartime aircraft because it was developed as a passenger airliner and wasnt able to take a bombay so it had to be a maritime recon aircraft.
@buidseach A bit harsh mate! Yes, it was not an ideal aircraft and suffered from a weak structure because of its civilian birth, as you mentioned, but it certainly was NOT useless. 15 FW200's of KG 40 sank 90,000 tonnes in August and September 1940, and one aircraft crippled the 44,000 tonne liner Empress of Britain on 26 October, which was later finished off by a U boat. Condors achieved a fair bit considering the small numbers available, though by the end of the war they were sitting ducks!
@admiraldma I Actually like the condor, but its a pity the Luftwaffe didnt design the condor from the start as a bomber, but it was a good maritime reconnaissance Aircraft,
@buidseach You are right, if it had been designed as a combat aircraft from start it would have been an excellent patrol aircraft. Fortunately for us the early weak aircraft were rarely molested, but the later well armed models had a hard time with our improved patrol and fighter aircraft. Once, a FW200 was forced down by a Sunderland!! Thats just embarassing, not to discredit the Sunderland as it was an awesome flying boat, but a land plane being outflown by a big old Sunderland, thats poor!!
@LottoWinner999 unfortunately my English isn't so good to understand what you wrote...(
Why German economic is unfair? It seems Roosevelt, Truman, Churchill and others gave Adi Hitler power. To direct him and Germany against fucking communism and soviet Russia. To not make its own soldiers cannon fodder. Fuck. I always knew Russia is stupid country with stupid government and people. Why do I live here yet??? Need to migrate to Canada, or USA.
@LottoWinner999 Maybe Germany hasn't Nukes, but it has Nuclear power. For example: reaction engine, nuclear bomb(90%), V-2 etc. Now they build one of the most power and fail-safe tank Leopard 2. Abrams? It's real bullshit. All US tanks were bullshit. But you've got best aircrafts. To be honest, I don't know why did you say me about Israel. Israel may to have no army at all. Anyway American soldiers will protect Israel(51st state of USA)
the problem with the Germans in WW2 was that their navy did not have an air arm, all the scout planes, float planes and planes like the condor where from the Luftwaffe and they needed every plane they could to fight in other theaters plus the Germans did not have the infrastructure or manpower of the Soviet Union or USA, they where doomed from the very start of the war in 1939, even with superior tanks and jet fighters if the enemy sends a million biplanes they will win
poor leadership @the top made that germany did not develop the long range bomber. Göring was a ingorent self promoted man, full of self esteem. Not to speak of his morfine adict.. NO.. i'm glad he did not made the luftwaffe to his full potential.. and also glad that goring was just a folower of a total incompitent furher.. i'm glad he was.. becouse when he did smart thins like not invade russia, made long range bomers..took out air fields @battle of britain &made a better fleet.. whe where toast
I've always loved the look of this plane. Why didn't the Germans develop a long-range strategic bombing program. I guess they did at London, but went away because it wasn't successful?
@ryznaga, the Condor was a good prototype for a long range bomber. Is a shame that Goering, that incompetent fat asshole was in charge of the Lufwaffe. A larger, more ranged and better armed version of the Condor could have been a good match for the B-17 & up Allied Bomber fleets.
@56LC Well, if you live in an allied country and dont want to be controlled by Nazis, you probably dont wish it actually did make it into the Luftwaffe!

Lots of planes were lost in crashes when the tale broke off.
