Damn, this thing's had a lot of views. Thanks for the kind words everyone. Those tricks just come from watching other people's tricks, modifying them with my own style, or just seeing what works. Lots of time and practice man. When I shot this video last year it was the first time in about three years since I'd picked up marching sticks or really tried to chop out. I shot this video for a friend, simply for the visual aspect so she could pick up some ideas. I don't keep my drum corps chops up nearly like I used to. For example, when I shot this vid, I hadn't touched a pair of marching sticks in over two years. After I marched the '04 season, it kinda lost it's spark. Almost like "been there, conquered the dream, what's next in the world of drumming?" kind of feeling.

I marched snare line with Carolina Gold drum and bugle corps back in 2004 and Studied under Carolina Crown's former caption head (and Star of indiana '93 center tenor, percussionist with brass theater as well), Brian Tinkel. After marching in '04, I put down the corps sticks and went back to gigging, touring, and doing session work, so I've forgotten a lot of the visuals I used to know. My friend Yael had asked me to teach her some stick tricks for her upcoming tour

the "blackwell" twirl is simply a wrist spin. Randy Castillo (R.I.P.) was using this spin in his solos with Ozzy back in the 80's

I haven't tried that one. Could prove to be interesting. My favorite by far is the stick pop that Tommy Lee does off of the snare drum. A lot of guys will simply throw the stick or toss it up after hitting the drum, but I prefer the pure way. haha. No "cheating"

I had a few lessons with Nick Angelis back in '03 when the touring production of BLAST! was in town. He showed me two of them. Other than that, I pretty much came up with them or modified other visuals i'd learned, such as the "Bolero" toss. The backsticking paradiddle section was part of my snare solo. I wrote the lick, got it up to speed, became bored with it, then decided to put in the backsticks.
