Just when you think your on to playing struttin around 2:00 Tommy pulls off a miracle banjo roll and I'm like uhmm ya ok I'll get to that! Excellent not note for note to the original recording but he's got a sweet groove happening and thats because Tommy is playing it.
I love the way Tommy plays so flawlessly. It is coming from his heart. He is the best in my opinion; Him and Doyle Dykes. I found Richard Hudson on here too and he is no slouch either.
Tommy is a great guitarist! I love to see him play. I also love to see and hear another great guitarist, 2004 international winner of the Chet Atkins award, Wesley Crider.
Everyone has an idol, his one was Chet Atkins! But when Chet Atkins was young, there wasn´t " YOU TUBE". Tommy has luck, he is born in the right time......He is my idol!!! And for many other visitors from youtube too................... Nobody can say today...uh uh who is Tommy Emmanuel......................................He is THE ONE!!!

I believe that Tommy will be a benchmark for guitarists for decades to come. There is, however, a new kid on the block whom I expect to be at least as good as Tommy in a couple of years: Smokin' Joe Robinson. There you have a real guitar wunderkind.
Actually I reckon the best version I've ever seen is by a guy on YouTube called gjourney. You may see the video in the selection on the right, I can now. Check his playing out. This song is one of the most technically demanding pickin' tunes and Tommy takes a few shortcuts. The gjourney version is hardcore Jerry Reed,
tiapan, are you saying he is miming? I don't get it. Looks like he is playing it to me and the guitar doesn't sound like anything jerry reed would play. Can't see any listing on youtube for jerry reed playing struttin, either. I'm also sure jerry would have played it a lot better. Please explain
Tommy Emmanuel would never mime. He would never need to. He probably heard this song on the radio for the first time just 3 minutes before this video was shot.
@hebijebi03 I was at one of his seminars and started wondering, "Who is that *#%@* pounding on the floor?" just before I realized it was TE!!! He doesn't tap his foot, he stomps it.
Jerry only died there a few weeks ago. I couldn't believe it well that's unexpecting news for yeah but he's east bound and down on the way to heaven where he'll be in a happy place. RIP Jerry.
great posting,as usual jerrys tunes are full of great ideas such as blues and funk, only the great tommy emmanuel can put great feeling into this one,i love that joke chet made that when when jerry writes these great tunes he cant play them a week later, good stuff,i wonder if tommy has played jerrys tune''blue finger''
That little Chet run sounded awful familiar! I placed it as the opening run from Chet's tune, "David's Dance" from Chet's "Me and My Guitar" album. Pure genious of Tommy tossing it in there as an extra bonus!
This looks like the February Etown 2008 Tommyfest workshop. I really enjoyed Tommy's story about how he learned this song. Really gave an insight into his character and work ethic. Thanks for posting it.

Yep, that was it. Just so you know, I'm the idiot that got up at the end to play a song with Tommy. I literally couldn't get the pick to strike the strings, I was so nervous. When I got back home and listened to my recording, it was pretty bad, but I noticed that Tommy never gave up on me and towards the end, it actually turned into a pretty nice little jam. That's why he's who he is. He never gives up and does whatever it takes to get it done. One-of-a-kind and the best there is in my book.
I assume you mean the Struttin' story. In 1975 TE went to Thailand with the Hanna-Barbera Co. as they were promoting their fantasy TV characters called the Wombles in the Asian market. He dressed up in a costume as one of the Wombles to perform at shopping malls and markets. Just prior to leaving, he got a Chet Aktin tape that had the song "Struttin'" on it. He became obsessed with the song and was determined to learn it. He had a nylon guitar that he had taken with him for practice jamming.
The problem was that Thailand was so hot and humid during the day that he had to set his alarm clock for 4 o'clock in the morning to be able to go outside and work the song out at his hotel so that the heat didn't affect his guitar. He would work on it till it got too hot then go back to sleep until he had to get up for his Womble gig at 1:30 p.m.. Also, he had put together a band and was playing a club called the Joker club at night. Everyone had to go home at 11:30 curfew each night because
of the post war dangers in the country. He would go from his Wombles gig to the Joker club gig then back to his hotel. He did this for the entire 25 days he was there and he said that Struttin' was so complex that it took him the entire 25 days to learn it to his standards, which are pretty damn high. lol.
Thank you so much for the anecdotes. I just love hearing stories about Tommy. Like you I got very nervous jamming with Tommy one time....it's like golfing with Tiger Woods....scary but exhilarating at the same time! He was very gracious, always positive and a very nice guy too. Anyone who jams with Tommy should feel proud!
Anyone noticed the song has a Scott Joplin flavor to it?
