To think that a flick like this one was directed by the same guy whose film unit was right in the thick of a real battle during the air attack on Midway Island on June 4, 1942. Makes you proud to be an American, now doesn't it?
The bartender, Boats and Doc were played by members of John Ford's Stock Company.
This movie is considered to be one of John Ford's masterpieces along with 'The Grapes of Wrath', 'The Quiet Man' and 'The Searchers'. All of them represent the best and the worst people and their societies can be.
These guys in this scene represent great camaraderie and fellowship of the military. They are far away from home. The radio was announcing the attack on Pearl Harbor. Most of them will die.
WOW! My father loved this movie. I have not watched it, but it had always been one of those things I know I have to do. Now will try to get a copy for me and my family. Thanks Big Hollywood and Powerline for bringing it to my attention!
Watch it. It is not a short movie (about two hours 20 minutes), nor does it have a linear plot (that was made by the war in the Pacific). But it is a consumate masterpiece.
