Words can not do justice to the levels of insane GAR-ness that is this attack. Gundams weep with envy, Transformers curl up into fetal positions at the sight of it, and Megazords avert their eyes lest they burn out upon witnessing its majesty. Even the Gurenn Lagan and the Steel Jeegs salute this most manly and impractical of attacks.

Oh well, I think it's pretty new and even ingenious that his entire body turns into a huge fist, but I get your point, at the end of the day, it is just a fist. But then you have to remember that Mazinger likes to hold on to its roots a lot, and has always stuck to the old faithful attacks from the 70's onwards....mostly.

Also, the timeslot it aired was near midnight. They got a shitty timeslot and went along with it, which means that they were relying on an older nostalgic fanbase. This wouldn't work if it was a new franchise.

it aired at 8 PM IIRC which isn't much of an ADULT ONLY time slot, and as far as I know TV Tokyo isn't one of those on-demand otaku channels.

old fans were undoubtedly a good chunk of the target audience and they most likely didn't expect the show to become as successful as it did (hence the low animation budget), but I honestly doubt it was meant to be a nostalgiafag-only series and that they had no intentions of bringing in any new fans. see my earlier point about the manga being shonen.

Honestly, the opinions of new watchers are those I'd most like to know. Shin Mazinger started slow for me. It felt to me like they were catering too much to long time fans, with how they embellished simple things like docking and rocket punch.
