Wow, that was unbelievable. I think that's what I love about Shania so much though, is just the purity in her voice. You can tell she 'feels' the lyrics of this song and it shines through. She's a talented woman and I hope she will continue to perform music and put out albums because I miss her.

This is a version with great backing vocals, probably . Comare with the live performance with Dolly (and Alison and band) in the Oprah show. . Without Dolly Shania leaves out lines about blessing and Joseph.. Hard to say who's better. Dolly at het best is great but she is sometimes erratic. Withney spoiled Dolly's "I will always love you" but she laughs about it and even does a Withney once in a while. Dolly likes Shania so no problem.

People, show some decency... Of course, Shania is perfect here, but: I think I hear Dolly's voice too, and even more important: Dolly Parton's the author of the song. So to say, that Shania is better is not very kind of you. How would you like if someone else were credited with a work of yours, with a creation that is dear to your heart?

Personally, I like Shania's voice very much, yet both renditions are very moving. I thank both talented and beautiful ladies for the music.

@w2k3r2sp2 I think there is more emotion in Dolly's version. I cry when she sings it. Shania sounds really nice on it and it may have better tone or range, but... Dolly's version is MUCH MUCH MUCH more emotionally driven and it pangs at your very being. Shania, as good as she is, certainly doesn't have the depth that Dolly has when she sings it. The same can be said for I Will Always Love You. Better voices are fine, but truly from the heart is just as powerful.

@jephybean I so agree, my mother also made me a coat of many colors when I was a girl. Each time I hear Dolly sing it I feel as though it comes from a place in her heart and not just words. The meaning behind it could not shine through as much as through Dolly's voice and from her own heart because it was her story and not just a song.

Think about it, Shania does sing this song to honor Dolly Parton, she sings her favorite song that cheered her up in her childhood and she realy sings from her heart. It`s not Shanias fault that she has a better voice than Dolly. I have never heard Shania sing another song so from her inside. This song realy means alot to her. She's also a very generous person, on stage she often comments that she'll sing one of het songs, allthough she can't do it as well as somebody who covered it. Shania is one of the persons she mentions. Anyway, they're hard to compare and it is is difficult to say how good Dolly would have sounded between 16 and, say, 50 with the technology of today.

dolly;s version is so heartfelt and full of raw emotion...i cry almost everytime i hea it. Shania's is more pop-y...which is great but i actual like her live version of the song because it parallels the rawness that dolly has in the original.

There is no better version than dollys, they are simply different. But with dollys you can beieive it and she did write it. I like this version very much, but so often the composer seems to get forgotten. They give the material to the singer who add their own interpretation sometimes with magical effect. But in this case Dolly did it first.

I sang this song about a week ago. I grew up with this, so i tuned my voice to the guitar and thought of Dolly, and just sang my heart out. My grandpa and his twin brother lived a life like that, there are 7 kids in their family, and they were dirt poor, but my grandpa and great uncles and aunts are stronger today because of that experience. the world needs more heartfelt songs like this <3
